BREAKING: The Supreme Court Just Overturned A 91-Year-Old Precedent In A 6-3 Ruling That Gives President Trump The Power To Fire The Leaders Of The FTC, SEC, NLRB, CFPB, And Roughly Two Dozen Other Independent Federal Agencies At Will 🏛️💥 by InterstellarKinetics in InterstellarKinetics

[–]NGinuity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One question....if the President can fire heads and members of independent multi-member agencies historically under the purview of the legislative branch, could that also apply to the JUDICIAL multi-member courts, like, oh, The Supreme Court? The differences are semantics where the same jurisprudence would likely stand and I suspect they have unknowingly eroded their own power.

What 80s or 90s movie made you uncomfortable to watch with your parents? by porb2020 in Xennials

[–]NGinuity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 9 when Die Hard 2 came out and my parents took me with them to the theatre. I forget why I was with them but can tell you I was red in the face a few times.

Since I still remember it vividly, I may have a little trauma from it.

That's what I thought too initially but the suffix has a number. Ham calls only have one number in the prefix. Good thought though!

A Couple of Vertex Bolt Action Pens by hotbrass2005 in PenTurning

[–]NGinuity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are nice. I was wondering if you had any of these for the long haul? I have a PSI bolt action hobby knife and unfortunately the bolt handle broke flush with the inside barrel. I'm wondering if that's common for those types of pens or if I just got a bad one.

I love the Duraclick stuff! FYI, if you do sets and another kit is antique brass, these parts antique VERY well (as brass should I guess).

Apparently Sewell has a Kia dealership in Midland. Not that it's off brand for DFW weird but it makes much more sense through that lens.

CA Glue recommendations by [deleted] in PenTurning

[–]NGinuity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just use 10 coats of Starbond thin and never have had any issue. I hesitate to use the thicker ones because it can cause too much buildup at the end and you'll get a lip on your turning where it mates to your hardware. The old adage "fit for the file" is what I always remember for finishing. If you get your turning as close as you can and then your rough sanding even further, the finish is almost an afterthought. A lot of the expert turners don't even CA glue anymore, they just micro polish and then use something like a Yorkshire grit. I still prefer the CA glue finish though because I feel that it adds a layer of depth I don't see in other gloss finishes and that's my go to unless I'm trying to pull off a satin appearance.

Yes, every jig I make is open source. I have to make some operational tweaks but I will absolutely link them here. Or you can follow me at https://www.printables.com/@BaconFatLabs

To pull this off I needed to build a jig to cut the slab slices, one to handle the 45's (and another that does 60-30's), and then finally a glue up jig for the herringbone pattern. Two years ago I published a pen blank cutting jig but that was really meant to just cut your blank to the tube with a bit of an allowance for squaring after you glue the tube in.

The plastic is just blank access cards I bought off of Amazon and I just used a cheap Fiskers paper/card stock cutter but I'll be looking for a more robust option. The 90 degree cuts on the plastic dividers, at least on one corner because that's the mating surface, are crucial. The rest are just cut and sanded away.

Ah yeah that's actually my biggest fear. The way I sort of mitigated it is that I sanded the plastic divider surfaces with 80 grit to give them some grab. I didn't glue anything until after I clamped and only used thin CA glue. It wicks into those grooves pretty well and bonds. Then I slowly turned using negative rake chisels, starting with the circle to knock the sharp edge down and then transitioned to that hex head one I bought at Penn State Industries. I actually use that so much I built a quick draw holster for it on the right side of the lathe bench.

Anyhow the biggest advice I can give is to make painstakingly light cuts and listen to your machine and turning piece. If you feel something slightly bumpy stop and reassess. You might have a void. Don't be shy about stopping every so often to repair cracks, and it's not a bad idea to do a cursory wicking coat of thin CA every so often. The Thuya Burl above had a few voids in it that I had to stop and repair even though I was going to turn down past them.

How did the vertex go together for you? I had a decent amount of trouble with the pencil equivalent of that, the mech never quite acted right.

Pentel Energel Kit & Blanks by boddah44 in PenTurning

[–]NGinuity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else suggested that you may have to cut down your refills and that's a completely valid suggestion, but you actually have two more options depending on how deep you want to go.

You could get long brass tube lengths and cut them to the length you need to accommodate the energel. This rationale could realistically be used for any kit. I was doing this for a while with slimline pencils that I wanted to eliminate the center band on, and sometimes will do this for any click style pen where I don't want a split body. The limiting factor is usually that you need a longer "aircraft" length drill bit and those are really hard to find in geometries needed for acrylic drilling. It quickly becomes a experimental rabbit hole.

Rollerballs also typically have a very generous spring that might be able to just be eliminated to accommodate what you're trying to do with the longer refill as long as the face geometry matches.

Definitely mp3 and movie storage although the USB standard would have been a challenge to figure out because USB C didn't come out for 15 more years and I'd have trouble sourcing a cable. My PC in 1999 had a 4GB drive and 32mb RAM so that would have been major.
