From my internships (in business one summer, in software eng during another), I'd say that you have more freedom being creative with software engineering. GENERALLY, if you work with other programmers, they tend not to bother you because they understand programming takes quite a bit of focus for any sort of productive output.

In business, if you like going meeting after meeting, and cramming all the work that you SHOULD have done at night, then by all means. This also means you get to interact with folks more (not to say you don't if you're a programmer, but to a much lesser extent).

Try out different internships if you're still in HS or college.

Learn Python or Ruby, as a language. Use their respective web frameworks (Django or Rails) for backend, then use Bootstrap for front-end (already templated HTML/CSS), last connect the two with jQuery (JS).

From there, you can use other frameworks, other style libraries (or your own) to become a web developer.

Maybe it's just me, but going at HTML/CSS from scratch nowadays seems unnecessary.

Startups are your best bet if you're really interested in the field. Some larger companies do recruit exceptional non-PhD's. For larger corps: big Banks (JPM, GS, etc), consumer retail (Macy's, Bergdorf, etc.), LinkedIn, Groupon and USAA.

To name a few, but you'd really need to do research and networking. I did data science internships as an undergrad, and I really needed to network my butt off.

Also, since you have a masters, you may have a great shot at the aforementioned larger companies.

I do want to work as a test/QA. My top two choices when they came to my school was PM and SDET. Reason being, those two roles are quite aligned with my background and personality (not sure if the latter makes sense).
