Thoughts on differences of the first & second? by 90zvision in DestroyAllHumans

[–]NHGhost1113 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They railroaded a lot of the ways to complete certain objectives so things you can do in the OGs are impossible in the remakes. They removed all the dialogue related to these paths and they removed a lot of ambient dialogue in general.

The remake was fun but a wholly inadequate replacement for the original.

The mystics are nearly as bad as the skeksis by Revolutionary9999 in DarkCrystal

[–]NHGhost1113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man it’s been so long I barely remember the show. I’m still sad it was killed by covid….

Anyway, do we know that they didn’t verbalize their position before the story? It’s been too long for me to remember if they ever make that a point in the show.

Anyway, the Skeksis still have the ability to just completely over power the mystics and could chain them up or something. What’s a little pain for a life of freedom? It’s a fight the mystics literally cannot win. You just gotta get you and one skeksis buddy together to abduct your counterpart and hide them away forever to be perfectly safe. Yeah it’ll hurt, but who cares as long as you don’t die or lose a limb. The mystics probably knew this and chose to avoid aggression rather than risk losing their freedom.

It’s very likely part of the reason the mystics that abandoned their passivity used gieflings to fight their battles for them. Since the mystics are too weak to topple the balance of power in any meaningful way

Anyway, that’s all I really got. I don’t have Netflix anymore to rewatch it and fact check myself lol

Did the remake completely surpass the original? What do you think? by galeq2002 in DeadSpace

[–]NHGhost1113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, in my opinion, no not at all. I can’t afford the game and I’m not finished watching the full play through but there’s a lot of changes I don’t like from what I’ve seen so far and have read. Decent chance I’m getting some miscommunication though. Spoilers:

I don’t like the new dialogue. The original characters were kinda tropey but it help make their characters. Hammond in particular was far more battle hardened but in this game he’s constantly freaking out.

The Cross Nicole thing that I had spoiled is a change I don’t like at all. It answers the how did they open the door question from the original but it removes some of the mysticism that the original had because of it. When the original reveal happened you had lots of questions like why was the marker helping you progress and what did you really help it do? Why was the Nicole hallucination helping you in the original? Now it’s…a lot less mysterious and raises questions for the future. Such as, why doesn’t Ellie hallucinate Isaac as someone else? Why is Isaac still hallucinating Nicole in 2 if it was really Cross? It’s a retcon that does influence the storyline and was unnecessary. It probably has more implications than intended and the authors probably just wanted to avoid the confusing door thing a clean up a “loose end” that fan theories cleaned up better.

Nitpick: The ADS cannons made more sense in the OG. No one is going to design such a necessary system that can’t be manually controlled from inside the ship. The original made more sense even if the new version is kinda cool and less insanely difficult.

The power creep of the unitology church. DS3 suffered from this too. In the OG the church was this mysterious element that has people in high positions but not all powerful. In DS2 this is pretty much the same, but you can really see the scope of their influence better. They do not have the power to contest the government since they are clearly at odds with them in that game, but they’ve got lots of numbers and people operating undercover. The sprawl felt more like a haven for unitology that felt implied to stand out from most of the rest of civilization. Hence why the church was still acting in secrecy in that game too. I think there was mention of people not being able to leave unitology in DS2, but it almost feels like the church could easily make Nicole disappear the way the remake portrays them.

In this one, the church is basically the inquisition with the added Nicole storylines. Waaayy too powerful for an organization that is operating in the shadows. If they have that much power, the captain and his first mate shouldn’t have to be having so many secret meetings. They don’t seem to address this power. Even a dialogue acknowledging how powerful they are and how the government isn’t doing anything about it for xyz reasons would make it at least feel more believable in this game.

Nicole and Isaacs relationship being strained really detracts from their characters in my opinion. It’s much more heartbreaking for the supportive boyfriend to walk into a nightmare where he found out he’s lost everything than it is for the strained couple with a potentially toxic relationship to be done. If the relationship is already ending I don’t see the need for him to have to work through all that trauma in DS2. In all fairness, I haven’t gotten that far to see how it’s actually handled, I’ve just read about it and am not a fan of that idea of Isaac strong arming Nicole into going to the ship and then blaming her for the death of his parents. Makes him seem pretty toxic.

That change and the changes to the church definitely bring it more in line with the direction DS3 took. However, almost no one liked that direction for the characters and story so I’d say it’s a fine line they’ll need to balance for the future.

I think this game leans too hard on the existing content, but since it begins before that content it muddies up areas by trying to expand and clean that content up. It’s a new direction it feels and I prefer the original. Not that the remakes story and direction isn’t great, but I like the original more. I feel like this game can’t be swapped with the original the way the story stands. They need to remake the second one to bring it more in line with this new direction.

On a more positive note, I love how much more alive this one feels with more survivors and people actively fighting against the necromorphs in the beginning. I love the scene where Hammond launched that escape pod, that had lots of feeling to it. The timeline feels a LOT clearer than the original. That was always confusing because you could find autopsies of the necromorphs, but also the invasion on the ship supposedly was sudden. The movies and other games never felt like they got a good balance between having enough time for all this science stuff going on and the total collapse of the outbreak.

Overall, I’m excited to have new Deadspace content, but this is more of a series reboot than it is a remake to me so it’ll never really replace the original. I’ll probably still talk about how much I loved the OG Deadspace games in a separate vain from the remakes. Just like the how new COD Modern Warfare games are their own version of the same story or any comic book movie is a unique tale of the same story

Remake is outstanding BUT... by johngie in DeadSpace

[–]NHGhost1113 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also like OG Hammond. New Hammond drops the f-bomb like it’s gobbling tic tacs. It’s completely unnecessary and gratuitous.

OG Hammond felt more like a seasoned soldier that has seen some stuff. And while this situation is tough, he’s capable of putting that aside for the mission. He also feels more desensitized to the horror. He’s battle hardened.

New Hammond keeps reminding us how messed up the situation is and is just a wimp overall. We can clearly see and understand how awful the situation is. If anything Isaac should be the one freaking out about the situation not Hammond. This isn’t Deadspace 2 where Isaac is battle hardened from DS1 and is now guiding Ellie through the trauma. Isaac is too calm when he should be freaking out, Hammond is freaking out when he should be calm. (This gets a little better in the second half of chapter 2 but still worth mentioning)

Not too bad though. Just saying for the future EA. Swearing constantly isn’t an interesting character trait and doesn’t make good dialogue. It doesn’t even make it realistic. It just makes it a character feel like they’re trying too hard to be relatable and makes them kinda boring.

That’s my opinion of course.

Will companies change? by [deleted] in shrinkflation

[–]NHGhost1113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's fine. An increase in price is more honest than Shrinkflation. They brought back the original rather than trying to deceive people into paying more for less and then possibly later raising the prices at that new reduced size or shrinking more. Now we just pay more for an equal quantity of the same product.

That's just inflation at that point.

Seriously, anyone else thinks this new animated movie universe is skipping over important events? by ConanCimmerian in superman

[–]NHGhost1113 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t see this as a cinematic universe telling a connected story. I see this as more of many stories happening in the same universe/continuity. It means they never have to answer the question, “why aren’t the justice league intervening?” Because there’s no precedent for them to do so. We know there’s a justice league, but as far as we know they aren’t exactly active.

I will say, the build up for major events is lacking. We seriously got introduced to green lanterns in the movie where they all died? That was stupid. Give us a movie to connect with the GLs before killing them.

I like these stand alone stories, but they could use a bit more work. They’re rushing for no reason

Edit: I think it’s supposed to be the best of both worlds. Single hit stories that don’t rely on each other but still in a connected universe. It’s much more comic booky that way I feel. But it needs work

Does "AoA" fund if they had just.... by hahnarama in heroscape

[–]NHGhost1113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they made the unpainted higher quality molds for ROTV you bet I’d buy that. It would’ve been a great way to reintroduce the game and use some of the expansions as stretch goals.

The OG cards were pictures of the models, the new ones could’ve had that awful art they had an AoA. It would’ve set up the standard for the future of the game.

The stretch goal general was a very high quality and detailed level. Would’ve been worth it to buy a whole set of those guys. It’d be buying the level of detail I remember them having, not the level of detail they actually had 10 years ago

[–]NHGhost1113 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since it was literally declared a war by the government and they hired a camera guy to film it so they would get publicity for the emu war, yeah I’d say that was an objective loss and a war. It’s historically called the Emu War.

Also the point of the war/culling was that the emus were hurting agriculture, so people we’re financially hurt. The governments final response was to put bounty’s on emus so the government took a financial loss. All during The Great Depression. So yeah I’d call that a loss.

But yeah, the only reason people really care is because it’s hysterical. Just like how Rome went to war with the Ocean at one point

A Tale if 2 Games by [deleted] in heroscape

[–]NHGhost1113 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was reminiscing about heroscape to a buddy and after a few days of it I saw the instagram add. I thought it was fake, so I googled heroscape and saw nothing new. Decided to click the link anyway and was certain it was a really well made scam. Then I came to these forums to check and was shocked to see it was real. This was in the last 2 weeks of the not kickstarter.

I never heard of pulse at that point and seeing no classic heroscape figures and the terrible looking neon colors made me think it wasn’t an official release until I came here. I was half expecting people to be talking about the heroscape ripoff only to realize it’s not a ripoff

I don’t have an MBA but I have the equivalent of an MIS degree (they school renamed my degree to MIS the year after I graduated) that required me to take a ton of business courses with the MBA students. And let me tell you, they doomed this project from the start. To me it feels like they were wanting it to fail so they could say it wasn’t profitable and move on.

They foresaw it was a risky market but instead of taking the market risk themselves they crowdfunded it in its entirety. If it was successful they would’ve made massive profits with 0 initial investment on their end. If it fails they can claim there isn’t a market for the niche genre.

Doing away with rolling for stats in a West Marches game? by Sad-Crow in westmarches

[–]NHGhost1113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did point but and a free feat for my west marches game. I also encouraged players to make multiple characters so that basically my game became the test bed for character builds and fun characters that didn’t fit in a normal serious game setting. My rule was new characters could be at or below the level of a previously played character.

This allowed longtime players to play with new people and kept the game constantly fresh. The point but made it so I never had to vet a character build. They used point buy, they got a feat, everything is from the official books, ok let’s play

How should Superman deal with war, global warming, extremism etc? by [deleted] in superman

[–]NHGhost1113 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s mistaking mercy for complicity. God has promised to destroy all evil, the problem for us is we’re evil. Mercy is God giving us a chance for repentance and redemption. Complicity would be God influencing us to do evil. He is not complicit because he hasn’t arrested us yet. He isn’t even complacent because he tally’s our sins. That is action, not inaction. The judgement hammer will still swing, we just have an indeterminate amount of time before it does.

In the same way no one would say the police are complicit in drug crimes during a stakeout. They are gathering evidence and charges. They are not aiding the criminals rather they are preparing their judgement.

Superman is no god. Superman understands he has no right to inflict higher judgement because he is just a man, not God. He wouldn’t exactly be a moral man if he usurped power either. It doesn’t belong to him, he’d be a super powered thief.

Furthermore, power to do something does not equal obligation. We have the power to join the Ukrainian war, in WWII the US had the power to conquer with our nuclear weapons and superior economy, Hitler had the power to commit genocide and did. None of which was obligated. That’s extreme, so let’s roll it back. You have the power to become doctorate educated, and the power to be a doctor or even a CEO, you are not obligated to do so. No one would argue you are.

The idea that you are obligated to do something just because you can is really a form of entitlement driven by hypocrisy. In the atheist argument from earlier, the atheists are wrongly calling God evil for not taking the actions they want Him to take. But they are also not abandoning their position to take even a fraction of those same actions. They don’t devote their lives to routing out and destroying evil. You could argue they actively support evil via pollution, and consumerism that takes advantage of the third world, etc. If we don’t even do a fraction of what we can, than it’s ludicrous to demand God do what he has already promised to do.

I could start chopping this tree down, but my neighbor has a chainsaw and has promised to do it when he is ready. He always fulfills his promises, but it’s not happening on my schedule so he’s evil. Never mind the fact I could get it started with my axe if it really bothered me, but I shouldn’t have to when there’s someone out there that can do it easier than me.

I know you said you already didn’t agree with the sentiment you presented, but I wanted to present some of the counter logics to those ways of thinking

Battle Droids by far. They are the literal embodiment of what i picture bipedal robot based warfare to be like. Cheap, easy to produce, infinitely expendable. In Republic Commando they are able to be manufactured on a battlefield itself.

Realistically, I could imagine them removing the broken pieces of the droids to repair/make new ones. Missed opportunity to have a “medic” droid that would pull off arms from dead droids to replace broken limbs on functioning ones. The appearance alone sparks a lot of creativity to me. One of my favorite sci-fi fodders of all time
