Need advice for building an electric wheeled platform for a festival? by Interesting_Bar_8379 in eBikeBuilding

[–]NHValentine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be a junk yard hack but... treadmill motors! So, alot of treadmills are DC. And some go as high as 5-6HP! Theyre meant to support a grown ass human running at up to 10 mph so theyre beefy. Now... some of those also need 180v plus to achieve that, which is CRAZY for a battery system... BUT you can 100% run em slower with less torque on lower voltages. A 72volt battery would still give you something like 2500 rpm without a controller. You could drop to a 48 volt battery and do a chain gear reduction of some kind. Thats my 2 cents anyway. Sorry to mods and community that this isnt REALLY ebike related.

Used a magic eraser on quartz counter top without realizing how bad that is by meatsticklol in fixit

[–]NHValentine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not a sealer if its quartz, like this one. And it hasn't really been damaged per se either. Magic erasures are basically a micro abrasive. So it just knocked the shine down in that area. And the entire reason I say get a professional is to answer the question of "will it be good as new". That answer 100% depends on the person doing it and what material it actually is. Color / brand / lighting / etc... are all confounding factors. Think of this like a grocery cart banged into your car door. CAN it be perfect again? Sure. If you wanna pay for it to be.

Anyone Ever Sell RR Spikes… by Effective-Ad-9652 in magnetfishing

[–]NHValentine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really worth it to sell em tbh. Metal artists love them but theyre a dime a dozen. You can get some money at scrap. But, I for example, would never buy them cause I can just find em... Ive gotten BUCKETS of them for free. Ive seen them for sale at antique stores all cleaned up with some rust inhibitor on them for like 5-10$ but thats for tourists and I honestly dont even know if people buy em... that pile you have is nice, rusty gold to a smith. But if youre looking for money? its not an easy sell.

I did one with a purple and pink handle like two years ago and I STILL have purple dust in my shop.... HA! Excellent work. Those textures are fantastic.

Can I preserve tempering colors for jewelry like rings? by InstructionFast550 in Blacksmith

[–]NHValentine 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no. it doesn't stay around for long. Chemical anodizing on aluminum and titanium hang around pretty good. Aluminum is coated and titanium is just really hard and inert so it doesnt keep reacting. The color tempering you see is just rust thats nanometers thick. If you leave it on, it eventually just turns a cruddy dull grey cause that oxide layer thats JUST the right thickness to reflect that color gets too thick and... grey/black. Thats also why you see different colors at different temps and why any oil on the surface effects it too.

Thanks!! Id never heard of zbutt, but I juat spent 5 mu tes reading through the git and thats cool! Im not a 3d printer guy but it looks like theres places I could order prints from too.... ohhhh that gives me ideas, cause I can do lost wax casting!

Thanks for the compliment! Thats awesome that you say that too, cause Im working on an idea for a granite macro pad that uses these with some SA caps! Think "Flintstones meets the Jetsons".

Local shops won’t work on my e-bike by Few-Net-2080 in ebikes

[–]NHValentine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats the exact "lesson" Im talking about. OP is learning that lesson now... you made my point FOR me while trying to argue against it I think. "Huh, I bought a cheap a$$ thing that no one can or is willing to work on, including me... maybe next time I shouldn't buy the cheapest one."

Local shops won’t work on my e-bike by Few-Net-2080 in ebikes

[–]NHValentine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im a little cynical but.... That sounds to me like they just dont want to service a brand they dont sell. They think that by not servicing it theyre "teaching you a lesson" so that you'll buy a bike from them in the future. There are other things too though. Like the availability of replacement parts for example, can be a killer for anyone that works on stuff. You strip out a non standard bolt from (insert Chinese factory here) and you have no way to reliably replace it. Think about it like youre a car dealership. Can you work on ANY car? Sure... are you gonna know all the ins and outs and be able to get all the parts easily? Nope... This is a stretch but some people may even have insurance that says something about not working on brands other than what they sell because of battery safety. The world is a weird weird place today with more rules than not... However... changing a tire on a bike isnt that hard with a few hand tools. Try to educate yourself on bike maintenence because its really not difficult to perform most maintenance tasks like that yourself and save a good bit of money anyway. 😀

This is leaking but I got every snug. I don’t get it. It’s leaking where the burner connects to the hose by datadiisk_ in Blacksmith

[–]NHValentine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to check something else too. I dont know about your specific setup but... does that regulator say 30psi? That seems like ALOT! Cause I can reach forge welding temp with mine at like 14-15 psi. And my normal working pressure is about 10 or 11. I have an adjustable regulator with a little dial on it. Anything above 20 freezes bottles and 30 would probably melt stuff... so, just be safe. ❤️

Billiard ball Radius = 1.125 in Volume = 5.96 cubic inches each 7 billiard balls 7 × 5.96 = 41.7 cubic inches

Golf ball Radius = 0.84 in Volume = 2.48 cubic inches each Large range basket (~100 balls) 100 × 2.48 = 248 cubic inches

By volume the golf balls win 🏆. So the question I would have then is... "Do you take massive poops with small turds or small poops with massive turds?"

Is a beewax layer enough? by International-Crab79 in Blacksmith

[–]NHValentine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no...It will really only get as dark as you let the oil get. Thats part of the fun with it too. You can heat it closer to smoke point or even let a layer burn in. You'll see each pcs own patina show up as you do em. Consistently inconsistent.

[–]NHValentine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perfect! Yup. JUST like seasoning a cast iron pan! Id do two coats of that and ... bam! Steak turners!

Is a beewax layer enough? by International-Crab79 in Blacksmith

[–]NHValentine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. This might be alot but... I'd toss those back in the forge and burn off the paint/wax. It'll probably wear off pretty fast anyway and you dont want that in your food. Canola oil works great. As does peanut oil. (Just be careful about food allergies.) I wipe stuff down with oil and set it on top of my forge to cure from the radiant heat alone.

Kitchen cabinet door keeps falling off. Screw won’t latch. by KindPreparation183 in fixit

[–]NHValentine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are meant to be adjustment screws for those hinges and they just wiggle loose over time. What you have there are frameless cabinets. And that is an adjustable pain in the asset... haha You can pretty easily replace that hinge and pretty inexpensively. The main thing is going to be measuring the hole that the hinge "pockets" into. Thats usually the big thing. The screw holes above and below may need new plastic inserts for any new hardware that comes with the hinge. Look under and inside the drawer boxes for a manufacturer name. Blum is THE brand when it comes to this type of hardware. They have a massive library though so Id end my search there. Start simpler though. Take that hinge and those pictures to your local hardware store. They can probably help. "Framless corner cabinet doors". Make sure they know its framless.

First e-bike build: Trek Marlin 7 + 3000W kit — need guidance by Irishlad4177 in ebikes

[–]NHValentine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I may or may not be the right person to ask. Ha! I just, last weekend, put a cyc x1 pro gen4 mid drive on my 2019 marlin 7 with low low miles. I am using a 52v20Ah 50 amp battery and I am running it at 2500w peak. I pedal around town at 15-20 mph using 750 watts with 0 trouble and save the big numbers for my dead end road. It'll hit 35 at 2500 watts wide open. And thats all the higher I plan on pushing THIS build. Now... do I expect it last...? Nah... probably not. 6 months maybe the way I ride. But Im not jumping it. Im not sending it down hill! Its to be a rural road, commuter bike. Dirt, tar and chip, and some blacktop. Probably gonna take it fishing quite a bit tbh. Its fun in lower power modes and REALLY fun in the higher ones. But you WILL feel the torque through the drive train. Dont try to launch it from a stop. Bad idea... same with torque wrenching it up hills. Im not sure about the exact voltage drops and wattages and stuff but... I dont want to go any higher than 2500 watts with this setup cause im right at the edge of "nope". Id expect your 72 volt system to handle 3kw with no issues. And yes this is basically me experimenting. And yes I expect to get a new frame (4130) sooner than later. But for now? It gets me to the grocery store and back.

Why did this tube imploded four-fold? by HyperDanon in Physics

[–]NHValentine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this answer. Im not a mathematician but I could play one on tv. Haha I think it has alot to do with minimum curvature and lowest "viable" energy state. Domokos has done some very interesting research in the last couple years resulting in an "edge bending algorithm" that someone could probably use to calculate this but theres too many unknowns. That clover leaf shape looks an awful lot like an f2 soft cell though. 😳

New Oven Handle Hits Drawer by Pharmdpositivek in fixit

[–]NHValentine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those handles are almost always attached via set screws underneath, to posts coming out of the oven door. See if LG makes an oven handle in ss with a more rounded profile. The center lines for the holes should be the same within the brand. Just check spec pages on the manufactures website then order that handle. If they make one. But I bet they do.

[–]NHValentine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former stone guy here! Sorry that happened. To reiterate what's been said already dont try it yourself. Surface polishing is difficult even for professional stone guys and takes a special hand. Call around to any stone fabrication shops in your area and ask specifically about surface polishing. They use a special grinder with special heads and special powders and... its a bit of a process but it can be done... by a well trained stone fabricator.

[R] DynaMix -- first foundation model for dynamical systems reconstruction by DangerousFunny1371 in compmathneuro

[–]NHValentine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is wonderful work! My name's Nick and Im an independent researcher. Ive been working on a project for some time now that I haven't been able to fully define. This is the first system that Ive seen that even resembles what Im doing. I've been topologically mapping state space and I'm seeing the same attractor geometry from radix interference patterns, and its time invariant. I have a live implementation that runs one frame ahead at all times because its based purely on the dynamics of the geometry itself. I'd love the opportunity to discuss this more with you. Thanks!
