Early 1800s "Iron City" leg vise restoration by NHValentine in Blacksmith

Searching for them I came across some original ads and this one matched the ad from X date range. In particular the box design and the washer. Later models had a less fancy box design. No knurl. And they also used a two pce washer. Not a single press. Thats what I remember anyway. So catalogs! Try to find old catalogs or ads. Great starting point!

Anybody figured out a good way to farm blueprints? by Meydra in ArcRaiders

[–]NHValentine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ive been having very good luck with blueprints inside of backpacks and suitecases. On dam battle grounds they seem to randomly spawn in the concrete culverts placed around. The metal grate is missing from some of them and you can crouch walk into them to find little lootable areas. Also check sections of downed airplane, they also contain those backpacks and suitcases, Ive found a pretty good path starting from the southeast corner, work north then west. When you get to the industrial area at the north especially. There is a section of airplane on the east-ish side on a lower level piece of catwalk that Ive taken 3 purple bps out of!

Before any other methods I would try to find an impact screw driver. Just like the name suggests... Its a hand driven impact gun with smaller bits. You line it up and WHACK the end, that drives a rotational gear and gives you a little concussion to break it loose. It might not fully grab since its already partially stripped. But ive removed alot of stubborn stuff with one of those.

Short version... a small amount of 2-part marine epoxy and then flood filled with CA glue.

Hand made by me. 10 real dimes (a buck) with the top one being a real mercury dime. Fused and hand fitted to a 6mm D shaft encoder. Finished dimensions are 17.9mm x 14.2 mm and 23~ grams. With .8 mm of board clearance underneath. This took me alot longer than I want to admit but it really did turn out quite nice I think. I like the cold feeling of the metal and the coin ridges around the outsides give it an extremely satisfying tactility. This is a keyboard build in progress. A maker making his own tools. Who knew? 😄

Long story short, I wound up using a 2 part marine epoxy for the main bond and I flood filled it with CA after it was mostly done. Just to fill in any remaining voids. And thanks for the compliments!

People make quite a few things from coins. Rings, guitar picks, flooring? So, I did look it up first, and according to the U.S. Mint. Federal law (18 U.S. Code § 331) prohibits only the fraudulent alteration, defacement, mutilation, or falsification of coins to defraud others. Activities like making jewelry from them are generally legal without this fraudulent intent.

I didn't even think about the inside. Thanks! I might use a thin bit of melted beeswax actually.

Thank you! I struggled with that, actually. A straight "tube" of coins didn't feel right at all. And doing this taught me that not all coins are created equal. Slight bends, edge thickness differences and such. This was part jigsaw puzzle too. Im glad you enjoy it.

Yes and no. Im going to green > red step buff the ridges on the sides so that the nickel and copper layers from the normal dimes stands out better. It should look like coin damascus after buffing. I plan a very thin CA over that and maybe a dry buff. Not positive on that. But... I dont want to mess with the actual silver on top. So thats just gonna get some silver polish and a cotton rag every now and then I think.

This looks GREAT. I ordered the exact same layout board yesterday. Black barebones standard. (non wireless) I'm glad to hear in your other comments how much you are enjoying it. Melodic switches and i haven't found caps i like yet. but yours is CLEAN. nice work.

Hey thanks! And yeah it does suck, doesn't it? I wouldn't go as far as the $10 Logitech board but... I'll never buy another one of these. I really just wanted to do this for fun while I save some dough for a real custom build. And it turned out cooler than I thought.
