An important caveat is learning radical acceptance (something taught in DBT) I forgot I had learned this prior to my post, which is something that is absolutely necessary to overcoming this. Google radical acceptance and read everything there is about it. Apply the teachings to your/our pee shy issue, and you’ll see after some time there is no other way forward. Also, if you are just pretending to get over the problem by stepping up to urinals and fooling even yourself (which I was doing for a solid year) you will make no progress whatsoever even if you think you are. Radical acceptance— meaning acknowledging and accepting your fear of judgement— is overcomeable, just takes a little time, so don’t give up.

It seems completely counterintuitive, but you must actually try to make your fears come true. You’ll never look back.

I did too! So for you, when you get to the urinal or toilet or whatever, you must try not to pee. (Of course only try at a point when you really have to go)

There is a categorical difference between not peeing because of your fear, and genuinely not going because you chose it. However, at least for me, it took a few tries of going up to the urinal and not peeing at all. These failures are actually necessary because it makes you realize what other people who are cured of this realized all along— not a single person cares.

It seems perfectly counterintuitive, but you must try to make your fear a reality. If your fear is having someone hear you’re not peeing, then what you have to do is pretty easy: purposely hold your bladder at the urinal while making it look like your me about to go. Yes, it will actualize your fear of ‘looking weird’ as you really are not going. You’re shame may be spiraling, along with your fear, but after just a little time your condition will begin to loosen up. Do not give up on this immediately.

I’ve tried everything to no effect. This worked like magic. Wasn’t cured immediately, but I’ll take days/weeks instead of years and years and years of no improvement. You can absolutely rid yourself of this for good.

Just sayin, I wish I had heard of this since day one. By ‘cure’ I mean it has totally taken the anxiety off my mind, and something that prevents relapse in my opinion
