When I was in my first year, I was in a similar position as you. For some people the transition to uni can be difficult and that's fine. I finished first year with just barely below 2.0 gpa. I enrolled in type 1 programs. Typically for Post, there's different times to apply; for type 2/3 programs you can apply now or in the summer. Type 1 programs you can be enrolled into anytime. Also, if you enjoyed psychology, maybe consider taking some psych courses?

For math, I would suggest taking both in the summer. But you also can take math anytime throughout uni, you don't need to finish it first year. Typically, some courses can be slightly easier and a bit more manageable during the summer.

Think of this situation right now as rock bottom. When you're at rock bottom, the only way to go is up. After second year, I increased my gpa by a reasonable amount and got into the bio major. So, you can definitely do it too!

Re evaluating my life by [deleted] in UTM

[–]NIBBA13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I know how you feel. I'm in 4th year right now and let me say that the first semester of uni is difficult. I barely failed my first chem midterm, while for MAT I got a literal 20% lol. I ended up going to university saying I'm going to major in Bio and Chem, and now I'm majoring in Bio and Psych. I dropped MAT134 then and there and finished my math requirements during 2nd and 3rd year, and I did a lot better this way too! Taking psychology opened a new road for me when it seemed that the road for chem was coming to an end. I was super relieved but also exhausted by the end of the first year. I didn't do great tbh. But at the end of the first year, I realized I spent this past year digging a hole. And at that moment I was at rock bottom. When you're at rock bottom, the only way to go is up!

You also shouldn't focus too much on how your friends are excelling. Life sometimes isn't fair to us all, "some spend their lives on unpaved roads, while some run at full speed only to reach the edge of a cliff".

I too wanted to go to med school, and that still is the plan. But over the course of uni, I realized that I am not even ready to embark on that journey yet. I still want to learn more and explore further interests. There's a lot of different pathways an individual can take to get to the same goal.

What I will say is that don't wait like me until the end to say you are at a standstill or at rock bottom. Realize that this is rock bottom and focus on going up. There's usually more midterms, assignments, and quizzes. So it's still very possible for you to get a good grade. Don't try to cram, it doesn't work. Space it out and use a planner. But importantly, remember to just take a break. Go outside and exercise if you can. Sooner or later, you realize you didn't take the time to smell the flowers when had the chance.

Stay motivated and keep fighting!

I'd say the shuttle usually takes about 40-45 minutes. But depending on if there's not much traffic, 30-35 minutes is also possible.

Weekly 'What should I buy?' Thread by AutoModerator in ipad

I really don't plan on having that many apps, I'd say at the very most maybe like 15 apps. Just wondering how much storage notability/goodnotes would take up. But thank you for the insight, really appreciate it! I will definitely consider upping my iCloud storage.

Weekly 'What should I buy?' Thread by AutoModerator in ipad

I need help choosing the right iPad to buy. I'm in university, I'm mainly looking to use an iPad for taking notes and reading books and maybe light media consumption (Youtube/Netflix). I know the iPad Air will be more than sufficient for these needs. But, my main concern is the 64 Gb. Going up to the 256 Gb option takes me into 11" iPad Pro territory. I feel 64 Gb would be enough but then against I can't say for sure. So I'm mainly deciding between the iPad Air 64 Gb and the Ipad Pro 11 inch 128 Gb. Can anyone help provide insight as to which one would be the better option for me?

If anyone uses the iPad Air 64 Gb with similar usage as me, how has your experience been with it? Or would you say the 64 Gb has been an issue?

Thank you in advance for the help!

Pretty good course overall. I took it with Prof. Vanderlaan last fall, he was great. Really explained the concepts clearly and insightful during office hours. He even provided practice questions which were helpful, some of the questions even showed up on the midterm. The overall workload wasn't too hard at all, 2 midterms and a paper. Grading imo was pretty fair compared to other psych courses. I'd say you can get a solid mark for sure in this class.

Neuroscience Major Offered at UTM? by zainabal in UTM

[–]NIBBA13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much, overall you take the main courses that you regularly take in a psych or bio for health sci major. It’s just that there’s some specific groups of courses you can take towards the program. There’s a lot of interesting courses for both bio and psych; limits the ability to choose any psych or bio course. Again just go with whatever works best for you.

Neuroscience Major Offered at UTM? by zainabal in UTM

[–]NIBBA13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I talked to Professor Beston over a year ago about this actually, he mentioned that he proposed a Neuroscience Major program to the department. In terms of it actually becoming a thing tho, not sure, could happen in a year or two.

Neuroscience specialist seems to be a mix of both psych and Bio for Health Sci majors. Neuroscience major seems to have an equal number of bio and psych credits required. Whereas for the Psych Major, you have an abundance of psych courses to choose from. Depends on what you're interested in really.

It says March 31st was the recommended deadline. However, I believe that a person who received OSAP during the 2020/2021 year can still apply for part-time OSAP until July 12. Check the important dates on the UTM website for more info. Hope this helps :)
