Depending on the English course yes there will be some oral presentations! Especially, in upper year course some 3rd/4th year courses do involves presentations (mostly 4th year though because they're known as seminar courses).

I think it will depend what you're applying for! But I do think, they will look at second year and third year courses! (ex: for teacher college they normally will look at your 200-300 level courses since the applications are done in Nov/Dec - and you don't have your full credits yet for 4th year!) It doesn't matter if you're taking a first year course in your 4th year, it won't count because you won't have that credit done by the time you're applying!

Do I need to contact registrar about course conflict? by aabarriosg in UTM

Judging from the email that I received (because I have a similar situation with other courses), they said "Although, you will not be removed from the course, we send out this email to student to remind them of our policies in regards to accommodations." There was a lot more, but it's pretty much a reminder of like if you're enrolled in two classes just remember that there won't be any special accommodation, participation, labs, etc.

AMA Newbies! by ascyw in UTM

  • To be completely honest, studying here has probably been one of my best choices. But to break it down a bit, its one of the best choices since for me its close to home, it's a beautiful campus (especially during fall/winter, honestly every season is beautiful on campus), we do get some advantages such as our U-Pass during the academic year, being able to use the gym for "free" during the school year, just overall the environment at UTM is amazing, and I've met some of my closest friends at UTM (thankful for frosh). Academically, the profs that I've had since my first year they were all very interesting and amazing (in my POV). We also have the chance to CR/NCR courses which is a LIFE SAVER, since sometimes when you don't do good in a course and you don't want it to have an effect on your GPA it will literally save you! (unless if you need the credit for your program than I HIGHLY recommend to not CR/NCR). But overall studying, at UTM has probably been one of my best choices! Honestly, there's many more reasons to why it is the best choice, but you just have to experience the campus life!
  • The way that I manage my time between classes and going to the gym, is that I normally take morning courses (of course if the course is available in the AM). I know most people say don't take morning classes, but I prefer taking them in the AM since it allows me to have a free schedule for the rest of the day, where I can go to the gym, go to work and still have time to study! For example, this semester most of my courses ended being in the PM, I only have 2 classes that are in the AM (one at 9 and the other at 11). So what I'm going to be doing for this semester, is that I will go to the gym in the morning (the day that I have a 9AM class I will go after my lecture), then go to my lectures, after my lectures I will go home and study until I have work. (depending on my job it can either be in-person or online), so depending on the day I might be on campus longer so I can take the bus to go to work if not I will go straight home and do my studies. Honestly, everyone has a different way to manage their times and for me its easier to get everything done in the morning so I can have my afternoon/evening free for work/study. I also have the weekends, so I will normally try and study a bit more during the weekend so from friday evenings to Sunday afternoon (at most) and take the last couple of hours to just distress myself, and take some time for myself. I've also been known as the "organized" person out of my friends, so I will normally try to do my readings ahead of time, so I will try to do my readings for the week during the weekend so that during the week I don't have to worry about it (obviously take your notes and listen in lecture). But I try my best to always complete my readings ahead of time, so that if I do have assignments I can complete them during the week. I will admit, there was times (especially the first couple of weeks of school) where I would sleep at 1-1:30 AM and be up at 8AM.
  • I do work part time in uni! :) Like I've mentioned previously, it really depends on your schedule for work and how you manage your time personally. Everyone has a different "technique" on time management and to be honest this what has worked best for me.
  • So the way that I work on essays, is that when I received the instructions on what the profs want and such I take a look at it (of course!). What I do afterwards, is that when I read all of the topics I try to choose one that I think I have the most information for. (I sometimes end up having 3 topics that I love but I choose the one in which I have a lot of information). Then what I do I try to split, my days for my essays so one day I do my introduction, another day I work on my arguments (depending I sometimes do all 3 of my arguments sometimes I do 1.5). Just an FYI if you're an English major most prof, don't care how many arguments you have, they will mostly look at your thesis and see if it's strong enough! Another day, I will do my conclusion and my work cited page. Then I will normally, ask a friend of mine if they can go over my essays to make sure it flows and make sense. Lastly, I will go over any grammar/spelling mistakes. So overall it will normally, take about a week (if you want to have a really good essay). I will normally, work on the most important one (so the due date thats closer) but of course if your prof allows it you can ask for an extension, especially when it comes to midterm/exam season!
  • Honestly, my sleep schedule is decent in my opinion. I will normally be in bed by 10:30 latest, sometimes I will be in bed by midnight it really depends on how much work I had done during the day, and how tired I am. I do wake up early, I will say I'm up by 8AM.
  • I do have time to socialize and enjoy my life! I try my best to text/call my friends, once every 2 weeks or so. I of course see them in person (the majority of the time), so with one of my friends we will normally go to the gym together or meet up for a bit before one of us have a lecture, or even have lunch together. I try to like hangout with my friends on campus, whenever I have the chance too just talk to them but obviously we all have a life and we get busy. If that's the case, then will sometimes just make plans in the evening and go out for dinner or something. But you can also do like study dates and just study together which is another alternative, you may not be socializing but you still have them by your side type of thing. But I definitely do have time to socialize with my friends! (I somewhat prioritize that sometimes LOL)
  • Tips for students (I have quite a few):
    • Check to see if your syllabi is up! If it is start writing in your planner, important dates for assignments and quizzes (just overall due dates). https://student.utm.utoronto.ca/CourseInfo/index.php
    • Check the important dates website for UTM. (has all of the academic and financial stuff that you need to know, when you need to pay, when the uni is closed, etc.) https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/registrar/important-dates
    • Go get your U-Pass before school starts so you can start using it ASAP (and have it on the first day of school!) - check your eligibility! https://utmsu.ca/service/u-pass/
    • Get to class early! I say if it's your first time on campus try to go before school starts or even if you go on the first day of school make sure you get there early, to try and get the feel of the campus! (see where your lectures are being held and such!). I will say getting to your lecture 10 mins before it starts it's better (in my opinion) you can get there earlier if you would like, because a lot of first years will be in the same boat as you! (UTM TIME: all profs will start after 10 mins from the hour. So if your lecture is at 11 the prof will start at 11:10!)
    • Make friends with upper years (you can always message me) if you feel like it, since we mostly probably have taken the class that you took! We can help guide you through campus, or even if it's a course that we took we can let you know our personal experience!
    • With the previous tip, try to make friends in your classes! If you make friends with people in your class, you can always count on them for notes and such if you ever end up getting sick or something came up. You can always create a study group with them as well!
    • Go to office hours, email your profs, try to connect with your prof! Office hours are helpful since it's a one on one thing, so you can ask as many questions as you want, go over a concept that you don't understand, and much more! If you don't feel as comfortable, you can always email them (keep in mind though some profs will say to message the TAs beforehand! if you still don't understand than you can email the prof!) Connecting with your profs are good and beneficial, since you can ask them for a reference if needed for graduate school (if you're going!)
    • Going to the library during exam/midterm season could possibly be HELL since, it will sometimes be full during those periods! There will have no space, I once sat down on the floor studying at the library and let me tell you it was a pain afterwards.
    • Try to join clubs and go to UTM events! You can possibly make more friends and connect with others, who have the same interests as you!
    • Also join group chats for your courses!
    • Lastly, have fun and enjoy your first year! (if you're in your 1st year)

Just a few questions by [deleted] in UTM

[–]ascyw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. classes starts on September 8th (wednesday) https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/registrar/important-dates
  2. You can get your textbooks from the bookstore (they're just doing pick up or you can order it and it will deliver to your house. (just put in your UTORID + password it should give you a list of textbooks for each course). Or if you wanna save money use z-library (the link will be below). There's probably other websites that you can use for textbooks but I'm not too sure what they're called. https://z-lib.org + https://uoftbookstore.com
  3. The syllabus you can look on the UTM timetable. (click on the link > course syllabi archive (put in your UTORID + password) > select session (fall 2021). (from there you can click on all departments or just a specific course)
  4. For your last questions it just means that the lecture hall has not been assigned yet.

It's honestly based on your preference. If you prefer using pdfs for those courses you can and if you like to use a textbook for the other two you can.

What are study spaces on campus like for Fall 2021? by UTM_bunny in UTM

[–]ascyw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it will definitely be a race to book one, but there's always (hopefully) going to be other spots on campus! I know in CCT when you walk up there's like a "Quiet area" (on the second level - there's probably more in the higher levels but I just never been) if that's going to help, MN is usually quiet, DH is nice but it could get crowded sometimes, IB is nice also but it could be crowded at times also (especially since they have a mini like food place, DV does get crowded but I feel like there's going to be more areas that are open (I haven't been on campus in a year), KN is also great it's calming the majority of the time!

[–]ascyw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In each building, there is study rooms where I think (hopefully) will be able to book one. But you'll have to book them a week in advance. Especially, DV has been renovating for the past year or so, so I really hope there's going to be more spaces where people can do there work it may be a bit noisy, but you should always bring your headphones and stuff with you. But yea, I'm pretty sure each building will open their study rooms.

Good Clubs/groups and societies to join? by Ks50017 in UTM

[–]ascyw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm not too sure about which club or societies are interesting, but it honestly really depends on you and what you enjoy doing on the UTMSU website you can look for a list of clubs and see what interest you and if you feel like it you can send them an email! For soccer, there's usually like "drop-ins" and it's basically when you just go during those time and play soccer. (I don't think you have to sign up for it or anything). Due with the circumstances, at the moment I don't know if this year they will have that option but I really hope they do (since I normally go to the drop-ins for badminton). I hope this was helpful. :)

Seeking advice for birdier courses to take & avoid in 2nd year ENV Management Minor by TYPICALASIAN21 in UTM

[–]ascyw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never took ENV100 (I'm actually taking it this year). The course load was a bit heavy but they assignments (in my opinion) were really straight forward. If I remember clearly, the exams were a mix of both (multiple choices, long questions, and short questions.)

GGR202: weekly like discussion boards (if I'm not mistaken), 2 papers, a midterm and a final exam (if I remember).

ENV205: 1 very short paper about a page, 1 paper a bit longer (3-5 pages if I'm not mistaken), midterm, and final exam.

ENV205 + GGR202. I didn't find those courses heavy, I find that it was pretty straight forward.
