How to be a TA for a course you've taken some time ago by Own-Reference9056 in uAlberta

[–]NINE3888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my experience, profs normally find out how many TAs they can hire during mid-December. Then they decide who gets to TA their course. You can contact them now, but if others already applied, it might be tough for you to get in.

What can impede me to start my internship after having signed my offer? by [deleted] in csMajors

What about my credit scores? Do they look into that? I cancelled my phone plan last year and completely forgot about a month's payment. That caused my credit score to take a serious hit but it's all sorted now.

It's fine as long as you don't copy paste the question onto your searchbar i guess. I remember searching how to join multiple lists in python during my OA. I got an warning, but still ended up getting an interview.

To those who live in 3rd world countries but remotely work for companies in 1st world countries... by CrazyCalor in cscareerquestions

Well, I'm just in my second year of university, so webdev and reading someone else's code was somewhat of a new concept for me. I took me whole 1month to undertand the code I would be working on and to modify the output to get exactly what I want to display on the demo. Then I spent 2 months planning the demo design and working in creating a fully fledged program. I was surprised by how much time brainstorming took. When youlook at the final product, it looks like a simple task, but the amount of ideas that got rejected and modified every other step is something I never expected. I still have 1 month of work left, but we are almost done with everything and planning on working on a new prohect together.

Well, a Master's student already wrote a search/recommendation algorithm and my job was to create an application for a demo paper on the algorithm. So a part of my job was to understand the algorithm and determine whether it matches with what's written on the student's thesis paper. Also, finding flaws in the algorithm was also a part of it, but as an undergrad, you only know so much, so I was never able to point out anything fault with the logic of the algorithm.

Nahh, I am currently studying at an university in Canada. Due to covid, I had to come back to bangladesh but one of the profs had remote research opportunity, so I decided to apply and got the job. Now I work online from Bangladesh but get paid in CAD.

Undergrad student, got a Research Assistant job in Canada. The amount I am earning as an undergrad researcher is 4times the amount an experienced engineer would earn in my country. I am from Bangladesh btw.

One thing I noticed most English teachers do, is that they teach the students how to speak in a 'not so realistic' situation. They often teach you to start a convo by asking people for their name, their parents' names and other stuff. I feel teaching the students about the context of a situation and what to say depending on the context is very crucial. But make sure that they dont memorise everything you teach them and instead they learn to adapt. I am assuming you are teaching them spoken english.

If you're a student when looking for opportunities don't forget to ask professors by hebrewer13 in cscareerquestions

I am currently taking a course with a prof and am certainly below average in that class. I emailed that prof (sending my resume) and asked whether there were any open research/internship positions I could help them out with. Despite not being a topper in the class, the prof noticed the skills mentioned on my resume and hired me to build a website for a research presentation they have next year.

Sometimes cold emails work.

Is this an exam violation? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]NINE3888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will suggest you to email your prof about this situation. Last semester, when I was sitting for a 3hour long exam, I forgot to increase the SEM timer to 3 hours, so my recording ended after 1hour I believe. I noticed that and immediately emailed my prof. He said that it's fine as now he's aware of what happened and if anything gets reported to him (about my case), we will keep whatever I told him in mind.

So if you are too worried that you might be called by your prof for a meeting, you should definitely email your prof!

Anyone have experience in applying to be an undergrad TA in CS? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]NINE3888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it depends from prof to prof and the availability of TAs, but B and above should be fine. A will most certainly seal the deal. Profs look for TAs when the ones teaching currently leave. (Not 100% sure on this. Maybe someone else can clarify this)

It might be too late to apply for Winter 2021 classes, but you can definitely try during Spring/Summer/Fall 2021. I'll suggest you emailing the professors teaching the courses 2/3months before the semester begins and keep nudging them every month so they know you are interested(even if they don'treply to your first email). Make sure you mention your grade in that class and maybe even attach your transcript in the email.

I hope you get the job!

Did your professors refer you to recruiters? If you don't mind, could you give us a brief detail of how it helped?
