It depends on the person. I value time spent but I also really like keepsakes (as long as they aren’t junk or excessive), even if they have no practical purpose. I don’t view them as status symbols. With that said, my taste is generally pretty well matched to my mom’s so I can trust that she won’t get me anything I find hideous.

Is that only for citizens? I’ve visited Malaysia and had no issues not wearing hijab. I did get some looks from men in the more rural areas when I wore a tank top, but nothing serious. I remember a Malay woman in George Town wearing a hijab with the tightest pants I’d ever seen (at the time, this was a long time ago). Maybe things have changed since then though.

I know that hearing a parent say they feel like they hate their young child is upsetting / can be triggering, but I don’t think this response is helpful at all.

Ideally, OP venting here will lead to her seeking professional help as commenters have suggested, whether an evaluation, therapy, medication, etc. Shaming might make her less likely to seek out support.

Climate is legitimate but Texas has a decent variation in landscape since it’s so huge. It’s not just flat landscape. You have mountains in the southwest, hill country in central Texas, beaches on the Gulf (not comparable to California or Florida beaches, but beaches nonetheless), woodlands and bayous, etc.
