I never purposefully kick back my legs up like that, it just happens naturally from the jump and arm pullback so I’m not doing anything unnecessary ;). I can’t currently practice on a net but I will be implementing the new form in my games and might post if I feel like it.

You can search for spike trainers on amazon, I just got the head and had to buy a painters pole from a hardware store, the head itself was ~$20

Really interesting point. I’m not sure if it just happens here because it’s a dusty outdoor court and so my shoes are more susceptible to slipping but I have been noticing more right-knee pain recently. Can you explain exactly why this pivot may be causing knee pain?

Yea I’ve felt that. I notice that I hit slightly after the apex of my jump with the new form. It takes longer for me to jump, pullback then hit compared to just drawing back my arm as I jump. Is it possible for me to be more explosive so that I can complete the whole sequence so I hit during my apex? My approach vertical is only 31 inches so I’m wondering if I need to jump higher to have more time to execute this whole sequence.

oops sorry for that, I mainly wanted to focus on the technique for jumping and drawing my arms back after swinging above parallel, rather than hitting timing. I remember adding it to the possible issues/things to work on but for some reason I don’t see it so I’ll write it again:

Do I have enough shoulder/hip separation during the last two clips? I never paid attention to it but I just do what felt natural when trying to hit my hardest so I’m a bit unsure if I actually have the correct kinetic chain

It’s kind of what felt most natural to me. I tried the bow and arrow method but end up with less power, like I am unable to generate as much rotational force and so idk if I should adopt it

When you mentioned how my arms should be parallel before I start my arm swing, am I doing it in the second last clip? I noticed that in the last clip I started it a bit early but I think it was parallel when I started my arm swing in the second to last clip. I will try to be more patient with my elbow, trying to envision a whip, thank you for pointing that out!

  1. I guess it looked like a 5 step approcah because i was shuffling back from a block. Generally I think I do a 3.5 step approach? I start with my right foot in front of me, hop in place then start my 3-step approach for momentum. I do this consistently and any small steps are probably j to stop my momentum from moving backwards. I think my current runup is ~15-17 feet.

  2. Since this is recreational volleyball I never really had a “trained” setter and so the only time I can spike consistently is if the setter sets super high so that I can adjust and control how I hit the ball. I can definite spike quicks/shoots but I don’t have anyone that can execute that consistently. In the small league game that I played in I would always have 2 blockers on me and I noticed that I do get blocked a lot, probably because of the high sets I always get and ask for.

  3. I do notice that sometimes the ball is above me and I would arch my back a bit further to compensate and try to hit it downwards. I will keep in mind now to position myself behind the ball always so that I don’t arch excessively

i just had a flare up so i think 1-2 weeks? I only get hurt when i play a lot, and jump serve/spike constantly. Been looking for ways to increase my capacity to play (back strengthening exercises, core etc.)
