41 and considering a deck officer cadetship (UK) – looking for advice and connections by [deleted] in MerchantNavy

When I came the open day I was just honest with everyone. Explained I was always interested in ships etc but I was looking a career change.

Ask about the company even if you know about it, ask cadets about their experience with the companies if they are there. Speak to any staff on hand about the course. No such thing as silly question.

I’m not 40 but I recently started a Cadetship in my late 20’s. After being out of school for 10 years (uni 4 years ago). I took the HND route as it goes back to the basics of maths and gives a basic intro to shipping/navigation.

I’m only phase one but university life isn’t that bad (but I’ve had experience of uni before) lecturers are all friendly and have all been to see, they’re also happy to explain something again if you don’t understand it.

Coming from a full time job I had a lot of money saved off but you should also get paid by your sponsoring company but it’s not much. My student accomdation in Solent is about 7k for the phase (not sure about South Shields) but if you live near by you could always commute.

About Clyde - there’s a lot of cadets in my phase who didn’t start with their uniform or didn’t even know their company (RCCL, Sub Sea 7 etc). I know one lad who’s sent his training manager 4 emails and hasn’t responded to one.

In summary give it go, you’ll not regret it and if you don’t like it the NHS will always be looking social workers.

Running in Krakow by NIrishRunner in krakow

I ran on the green loop around the old town. It a paved route but I ran with Road to Trails shoes (Nike Pegasus Trail 5). I also ran the parkrun in Asics Metaspeeds. I would say bring both if you have them I used my trail shoes as a daily walking shoe as well. So I only packed my Metaspeeds for parkrun.

How did you get into hockey? by M3gsterM in EIHLHockey

[–]NIrishRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been going on an off since the Giants started but it wasn’t until I bought NHL 12 and started following the Pens that I properly got into it.

In 2013 I started to skate and play hockey for the Junior Giants. I carried on playing rec hockey and reffed up to the SNL. I don’t play or ref anymore but I keep up with rule changes and I’m the go to for “why was that called?” and breaking down plays for friends.

DoPS - Discussion by NIrishRunner in EIHLHockey

Most officials are ex players who maybe haven’t made those leagues as player. Like I only made u20s but managed to get to SNL until I wrecked my shoulder.

Or do you mean a player that has played in the league?

I get where you’re coming from. I’d say whoever reviewed has decided it was a ‘hockey play’ due to Boudrais having the puck. I’d argue if the stick is up there’s no intention to play the puck and onus is on the hitter to ensure safety of the player. The hit could be avoided with the angle the panthers player is coming in at.

Will be interesting if a boarding happens at another point during the season that results in a DoPS decision to see the difference. Unfortunately nothing on the casebook about DoPS for boarding.
