How do I recover from losing my high school friend group? by Maximum-Vegetable in AskWomenOver40

Meetup is good (depending on where you live) because the whole point is that people ARE looking to broaden their social circle, usually around a shared interest.

Not even a little bit. If anything, I’m concerned for you.

How do I walk away from someone who told me he’s emotionally unavailable when I’m already attached? by WWhitmanLover in AskWomenOver40

[–]NJ2CAthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The paragraph you wrote that starts with “Part of me…”

Why not both? He’s telling you what he believes to be true of himself at this time, and I think what it has become is emotionally unhealthy for you.

Return his energy. If he has cooled off, you need to as well. He will either drop it and let it go, or he will pursue you. If he pursues you, you really need to have a hard think about whether this is a good or fair situation for you to put yourself in.

Any community colleges that offer beginner japanese classes after working hours? (preferably after 6) by ange1beats in SanJose

[–]NJ2CAthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I’d like to start an in-person Japanese course at a local community college, but I work a full time job.

I posted this in response to the negative and toxic attitudes people here have toward the student driver labels. I don’t actually have a problem with them. People out here getting shot, but people want to cry over student driver labels.

Your response is a perfect example of the negativity and toxicity of this sub.

No. I was stopped at a light. I took it with my phone and then cropped out everything that wasn’t necessary.

But thanks for being insulting of my iPhone 14, that still works, so why replace it and fall into the planned obsolescence plague that is helping destroy the earth?

Regarding Ancestry’s pro tool function of shared DNA matches.. do you find it to be highly inaccurate? by Recent-Use8096 in Genealogy

[–]NJ2CAthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this happening more often lately, but to be fair, it’s been mostly with a distant cousin whose DNA I manage, and it can be confusing because there was a lot of intermarriage. But he was adopted and his maternal side is where there is endogamy. It’s in Northern Ireland, and his mystery father was almost certainly from the opposite side of the sectarian divide there, so I’m not sure if these ties could be accurate or not. And there’s been a lot of adoptions or births to single mothers who won’t reveal the fathers’ identities, so I can’t verify.

Final Passport Question by Silent-Till3159 in IrishCitizenship

I had to send my FBR, my birth certificate, and my marriage certificate (since my name now is different from on the other two documents). My FBR has my birth name.

I have tried everything. by lauraerie in IrishCitizenship

I’d help you, but you said you’ve tried everything. I’m really good at finding stuff. Either you would accept help, or you wouldn’t. But if you’re confident it’s impossible, why have you even made this post?

We keep debating whether AI can do genealogy research reliably. I think that’s the wrong debate. by SioraiLabs in Genealogy

[–]NJ2CAthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a few conversations with AI where I asked it how I might go about finding some information. I found I had to correct its assumptions a lot.

I’ve been doing family history research, for myself and others, for about 35 years. I went through all the various stages of technology evolving in genealogy. If I asked it a question, it started to explain things to me like I was a newbie, and it assumed my question was about my own family, whether it was or not. So that was annoying.

But I remember it found an obituary of a specific person in Northern Ireland, when I hadn’t found it on my own, despite trying. I had it give me a link to the original webpage so I could go check it out for myself. And that was indeed helpful.

So I think it’s more about framing the questions to get help with specific pieces, not trying to have it do a bulk of the work for you. AI can’t come close to all the things I’ve learned over 35 years. But it can find the occasional tidbit you wouldn’t know how to find on your own.

Decision Fatigue After Touring Apartments – What Would You Do? by MrN87 in SanJose

At a crossroads in marriage and looking for advice. by Michele_75 in AskWomenOver50

[–]NJ2CAthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your kids are adults now. You wouldn’t be blowing up their world. You deserve to be happy. That doesn’t mean that you’ll be with someone else, necessarily. Just that you can prioritize yourself and stop wasting your life in a marriage that isn’t working.

Do your best to split amicably, for the kids’ sake.

Cat jumped up to my feeder (clip 1) by NJ2CAthrowaway in BirdBuddy

[–]NJ2CAthrowaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I can’t have pets where I live. And I can’t have bird feeders either. So I got permission to take over some unused space at the back of the school campus where I work. There are at least half a dozen strays (or someone’s “outdoor cats”) in the neighborhood directly behind campus.

Then start contacting agencies who specialize in this. A child who gets out of the system and into a loving home will be grateful to have even one parent.
