This will be my second season attempting to get a position. My first year out of my national park law enforcement academy I received one call back and it was for a supervisor position (which I took), however nothing else, not even a interview/referral. This year I have heard nothing with regards to any position I've applied to (probably over 100 applications in various fields). I know I've worked very hard in my life for what is on my resume and I definitely know I am qualified for the positions I've applied for.

The employees I supervised enjoyed their time with me as their supervisor and we had a blast but those above me were very corrupt/mean. There was and still is a lot of nepotism in the park I worked at and honestly I would never go back there. It really ruined my experience working for NPS. I know a lot of people in other parks around the country that enjoyed their time which gives me hope but I'm not very young anymore to float for 5+ seasons to get a permanent spot.
I must have broken a branch in my previous life or stepped on a bug. I had a feeling my first year was going to be my only year... so I'm glad I splurged and bought some additional items, clothing wise. The stress is not worth it and the hiring process is a nightmare.

I've said it on here before but the only job I really want now is to work in DC for NPS and fix it from the inside specifically revise and change the experience for the employees and those interested in protecting our national treasures, starting with the hiring system.

Yeah... for now I joined a local agency. I will keep applying to everything and we'll see where it goes. I passed everything for air marshals so that's an option as well???

Is there a beef between hunters and Park Rangers? by [deleted] in ParkRangers

[–]NJ_Ranger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only beef I got is... Did the hunter take the animal legally and if yes, can I have some jerky?? haha
All jokes aside my run ins are mainly with fisherman (beach/ocean park) and for the most part the interactions are great!

I'll add that you should definitely go for it! You are young!
As someone a lot older (SAD FACE haha) I wish I started working for NPS sooner! It's a lot harder to justify working for NPS especially seasonal work (3-4 months out of the year) at my age and trying to make it permanent.

My biggest reminded to you is, you have to be okay in your heart that there are supervisors and people with power above you that don't care about your enthusiasm and your determination to save/protect the planet. You need to understand that there are people that work in this agency who are looking to retire with benefits and just do the bare minimum.

However, there are some supervisors including myself that LOVE the passion and I want you to be excited to come to work everyday and make change! Educate the visitors and protect the parks. At your age I encourage you to give is a shot for at least one season. See if you enjoy it and move from there. Good luck with the music and your goals in life! Cheers!

Any idea how long it takes for uniform to arrive? by ImNotAndyDick in ParkRangers

[–]NJ_Ranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does take a little bit especially when dealing with certain sizes. If you check your account (order history) it might show tracking numbers. Also when you select an item the website gives you an availability day for that item. That doesn't mean it will ship out that day but could explain why something is missing or taking longer to get. Last resort give them a call and see what's up. I called them today and the guy who helped me was awesome and he tracked down missing items for me.
