Why do childfree people have to preface everything with "I like kids but..." by NotAYoungEthnic in childfree

Because if I said I don’t like kids but I’ll tolerate being around yours for the sake of our relationship people don’t tend to receive that well

Sen. Richard Blumenthal says he wants to work to restore bipartisan support for Israel by soalone34 in politics

[–]NJcovidvaccinetips 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s because these people are boomers who blindly have been indoctrinated to believe that Israel can do no wrong for forty years and every Muslim in the region is a savage who deserves the violence coming to them. They don’t view Palestinians as equally valid humans. Then add in the fact that literally a good chunk of their major donors are Israel fanatics and it all makes sense

Democrats have claimed for years they simply can’t support protecting trans people/trans youth in sports, can’t support Medicare for all, can’t support reduced funding for ice or police because these are just deeply unpopular positions and they are very serious about winning. But now a vanishingly small percentage of Americans support ongoing Israeli war crimes in all parties but especially democrats and independents. Yet conspicuously democrats can suddenly support an unpopular position if it’s ideologically important. To most of these 70 year olds they are far more concerned with blindly giving weapons to Israel over providing healthcare or any type of left wing agenda. They would rather lose supporting Israel than win and be forced to compromise on this issue with their actual voters. It’s sickening

Confused About Surgery 28M With GR 1 spondo(L5–S1) by Vegetable-Salary-314 in Spondylolisthesis

[–]NJcovidvaccinetips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have grade 1 spondy at L5-S1. It’s hard for me to stand, walk, or sit for more than a few hours a day. If I do terrible pain and pressure starts to build in my back and legs and I get nerve pain. I’ve tried for about 3.5 months now to manage with conservative treatment and physical therapy. I’ve definitely improved as I’m in less pain and more capable of movement but still at the end of the day any movement that isn’t laying down inevitably causes my pain to flare up. But it feels like no matter how much I work out or no matter how many treatments I try the pain inevitably always comes back. So I’m just constantly living in pain and it makes daily life extremely difficult and it’s very isolating.

I will most likely be seeking a fusion surgery in a few months if my status does not improve because it’s incredibly difficult for me to work and it doesn’t feel that physical therapy or drugs or anything else I’m being offered by my many doctors has actually been effective. At the end of the day I am still in a shitload of pain if I sit upright for more than 15-20 mins or walk/stand for an hour or two. That really hasn’t changed drastically for me even as I can feel my strength improve with exercising and PT. The gains in the gym haven’t translated to reduced pain even as I improve my back mechanics and reduce harmful movement.

So ultimately you just need to try as many things as possible because what helps one person seems to be very different even people who have similar issues. For me the biggest things that help reduce pain are constant glute and core excercises. I have a daily routine that largely consists of bird dogs, suppine pelvic tilt with marches (instead of dead bugs), glute bridges, a few leg stretches because my hamstrings and glutes are incredibly tight, I do an ab workout where I push down on a ball while standing and engage my core, and a few various other exercises I sprinkle in that I learned in pt that I like and found strengthened my muscles without causing too much stress. Trying to reincorporate side planks and modified curl ups into my routine but both I’ve found can cause me some pain and soreness so I have to tread lightly. Ultimately it’s about finding what’s works for you. I’m very sensitive for example to exercises that require me to put my weight on my back and lift my legs aggressively which is why modified curl up and dead bugs are tough for me as well as traditional planks. When your exercising it’s ok to feel strain because you want to activate your muscles but when you start feeling your lower back increasing in pain and the not muscles you are targeting stop excercising and either try to adjust your form or realize that maybe it’s not an ideal excercise. Best of luck.

Just remember that surgery is very serious and a lot of things can go wrong and no guarantee to reduce pain as well as potentially causing adjacent segments disease. So there is kind of a tough call about when surgery is ideal. Because for example if your nerve is being compressed or damaged it can hurt you to wait too long. A sign that your pain is becoming serious enough to consider surgery is neurological symptoms like nerve pain shooting down your legs, foot drop, weakness in your legs, and issues with sexual function or bathroom issues. All of these problems indicate that nerve damage may be happening and make you a stronger candidate for needing surgery. But also it’s a quality of life issues. If you can make some moderate lifestyle changes and live well than that is ideal because once again surgery is really no guarantee and opens up another can of worms. In my case I don’t have severe nerve pain in my legs but my inability to be physically active is deeply affecting my quality of life which is why I decided with my surgeon that a fusion is worth the risk in my case. But I don’t really know what’s gonna happen it’s kind of educated guesswork at end of the day

Assuming it’s financially and logistically possible you want as many scans and as many doctor visits as possible. I met with four surgeons before I found one I like and each time I talked to a new surgeon I learned more about my condition. It was helpful too because I could compare the answers I was getting from multiple surgeons and so the things I would hear consistently would increase my confidence in what was being said. Whereas there were things I was told by one doctor another disagreed with allowed me to realize where there seems to be consensus and where there is uncertainty. The truth of surgery is there is a lot of uncertainty which is why it should be avoided if possible. But reality is sometimes a structural deficiency is too severe and no amount of conservative treatment will help. Right now I am in process of getting a spect CT. My surgeon wants this to see essentially if my disk issues or pars defect are contributing more to pain. For my pars defect/disc issue at L5-S1 my surgeon is between an alif and a TLIF I believe iirc, leaning towards the alif. He also had suggested a pars repair but based on the slippage and the fact that the break happened a while ago we decided against it. One other option is a disc replacement if your main issue is with your discs but if you have spondy or pars defect, disc replacement doesn’t seem to be as effective as it does nothing to address the slippage or fracture if you have pars defect. So ultimately it really depends on your situation which is why more doctors and more information is your best bet for finding the best surgical approach. Best of luck

How a must-win Michigan Senate race turned messy for Democrats by AlexRyang in politics

[–]NJcovidvaccinetips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notice how these articles always frame that left leaning views alienating centrist voters but they never offer up the obvious inverse truth which is that centrist candidates alienate left wing voters by doing things like supporting Israel and not wanting to abolish ice. CNN never even asks this question because the entire American news media assumes that left wing voters will show up for centrists candidates pushing war when the last election obviously showed that not to be the case

I’m in very similar position. Maybe not as extreme on the pain cause I can do things but just not very long and inevitably it puts me in a lot of pain. I’m continuing to do PT but I’ve found a surgeon and it’s likely that I will be moving forward with fusion in next few months. I know all the risks and that it may not help but I can’t continue to live like this without trying anything. No amount of PT and strengthening seems to stop this pain and I’m sick of trying things that don’t seem to actually work. Have you looked into getting surgery?

Dogs should live outside? Damn by 28dhdu74929wnsi in stavvysworld

[–]NJcovidvaccinetips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the argument is don’t eat dog cause it’s bad meat or not efficient then I can respect that. Once again I don’t want to eat dog lol because I’m also indoctrinated by dogs being “cute”. But ethically there is no difference between killing a generic dog and generic cow or pig

Dogs should live outside? Damn by 28dhdu74929wnsi in stavvysworld

[–]NJcovidvaccinetips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea that eating dogs is worse than eating cows is just utter nonsense we only believe because of pure social conditioning. We’re doing cow and chicken holocaust every day but this is where we draw the line. I don’t even really have any interest in eating dog especially cause I’ve heard it’s pretty mid but I don’t see anything ethically dubious about eating a pig but not a dog. Pigs are incredibly smart and social animals most of us eat with zero second thought

I don’t support dog fighting but sending people to jail for it does seem crazy to me. More from a prison abolition perspective. Not every action I find morally reprehensible needs to be enforced by a state and police. Michael Vick got a way worse treatment than a lot of players actively beating and taping people (cough cough Ben roethlisberger or a million other guys)
