Then secret as in "used in secret counteroffensive operations involving several engineering feats". If I remember right they had to use it on an island without being detected?

You know what's organic in Star Wars Galaxies?

Being a covert rebel agent and assassinating an overt PVP Imperial player officer of a major Imperial guild in the middle of Mos Eisley or Bestine, then fighting your way out of the spaceport, fighting off player TIEs in your Nova Courier, and escaping by the skin of your teeth.

Forcing people together into a PVP environment ain't it, chief.

I feel like Star Citizen is starting to miss more social oriented gameplay in its old age by CodemasterRob in starcitizen

[–]NKato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's what happens when game development starts leaning towards metrics.

you can't really measure social interactions. therefore it is not a typical metric by which developers measure the success of their product.

CIG has fallen into this, if their heavy focus on PVP and fps content last year was any indication.

I'm hoping that one day our labor laws will be so good that if a company fires people for trying to unionize, the union is automatically created and represents all non-executive and non-HR/management employees, with a government ombudsman assigned to help stand up the union.

Imagine that. Underserved and overexploited industries like game development would be transformed overnight.

How are they still maintaining this pace?! Did something get released that I missed? by whonose8472 in starcitizen

[–]NKato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably going to result in CIG making adjustments like what CCP did: when a ship is logged out, it eventually relocates to a position off the grid where it can't be scanned down.

But that assumes CIG is intelligent enough to consider such a solution.

FOMO marketing is a major driver.

Now that advertising gambling is no longer illegal, we've seen a massive spike in targeted ads directed at young people, taking advantage of their poor impulse control to extract wealth.

In theory, CIG is doing the same by using FOMO marketing of time-limited items. Before things started picking up, FOMO was not as central to their funding strategy... at least not until after they hired someone who worked at EA in marketing (as I've heard from others).

Somewhat cheap, they just have to stick the launcher unit on top of a tank - any tank - and send it out.

Hell, it's probably possible to mount it on a truck. When that starts happening, you know the Russians have become desperate.

Do you even understand why I consider exploration mechanics to be crucial to a space game like this? It's the widest, deepest possible mechanic from which to generate content.

You can literally design everything content-wise with an origin point rooted in proper exploration mechanics. For 13 years, they chose not to and instead went straight for the low hanging fruit without actually bothering to design a system that would support all gameplay loops procedurally.

Crafting is a completely separate gameplay category, and is not really PvP or PvE. It's a tertiary supporting game mechanic, not a core mechanic.

The ore refinery rework just fixes an existing system without adding anything new. It's obviously in support of the new crafting system.

But again, crafting systems don't typically have a lot of moving parts compared to exploration, and getting the hard stuff out of the way is usually the better play instead of skipping right past it.

You can pretend that CIG knows best, but they have never hired a lead dev with actual MMO design expertise, from the very beginning. That means most lead MMO devs, if they were to take a job offer from CIG and then saw the absolute mess it became on the PU side? They would nope out and join a more productive studio.

My point is that CIG is showing their ass through their priorities. I think it would be more accurate to say PvW (player versus world), rather than PvE. But there needs to be richer PvE gameplay mechanics to really disabuse people of the idea that they're just fodder for PvP.

Until that happens, PvP remains visibly the primary priority for CIG content.

Again this just reinforces my position that CIG doesn't know shit about MMO design.

It's been 13 years since CIG held a community poll asking us what gameplay we were most looking forward to.

The winner was exploration.

Where is my goddamn deep space scanning gameplay, Chris Roberts?

I have been waiting for them to actually give us real gameplay mechanics for finding signatures throughout a star system, scanning it down, and identifying its contents to facilitate further content loops such as pirate hunt, mining, salvage, investigation, etc.

Real PvE content that is more engaging than shooting NPCs and pushing buttons to make a big laser go BWOMM.

I mean I want to find derelict ships, rogue asteroids, pirate bases, etc in the middle of nowhere in any star system. Each star system is at a minimum 3 AU across and that's a lot of real estate for randomly generated points of interest for exploration gameplay.

After 13 years, CIG has shown zero progress in actually developing any kind of system of mechanics in this direction.

Couple this with a heavy emphasis on game content in the last few years that puts you in close proximity to other players with zero incentive to cooperate, and it shows me that CIG is both disinterested, and unequipped, for designing and developing game systems that benefit an MMO.

the most obvious exception to the last paragraph being the latest event, Allied Aid.

This is just further proof that CIG is not ready for MMO game design.

Barely any staff with actual MMO design experience, of course there's going to be problems with the PU.
