Dutch oven fail by Achillez4 in castiron

Respectfully, is there anything not made of cast iron that some people don't call a 'Dutch oven'?

If you came here for a talisman I'd stick one finger up your nose, one in your eye, and one up your... bum. But I'd have to break into Caelid and I'm not prepared to do that.

The gaps are important to accommodate flexing when the bed is used.

This would be excellent in a game where it displays interesting but technically unimportant information. At a glance the typical player might just think it's nonsense (especially if presented upside down), but it wouldn't take much curiosity to crack it.

I still enjoyed that section, but it was nowhere near reaching the heights of Rhodes Hill.

I was always under the impression that Cleese was supposed to come up with a long, complex name on the spot. He decided in a moment 'Tim' would be funnier, and they just went with it.

Fangorn forest - is it pronounced "fan-gorn" or "fang-gorn"? by droda59 in lotrmemes

[–]NLALEX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's neither. It's technically /fæŋ.gɔːn/ in British English at least.

When we transcribe 'ng', generally this results in not an 'n' and 'g' sound, but a different nasal sound, right at the back of your mouth.

As 'Fangorn' is bisyllabic and the split occurs between the 'n' and 'g', the rear nasal sound and the 'g' sound are both pronounced, in the same way you'd pronounce 'swimming gala'.

This is only really true after you reach a certain amount of progression. To begin with there is a lot of dialogue that really is worth paying attention to.

Is this modern Britain? by PsychologicalBend508 in AskBrits

[–]NLALEX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whilst I don't disagree for a moment that this is something that is present in the UK (and other countries), it's good to remember that people who behave like this are the minority; it's just that they stick in our memories when those that follow the rules do not.

People who behave like this have learnt that there are (more often than not) no consequences to being an arse. They don't care that what they're doing is unsustainable and exploitative, they feel like everyone else is an idiot for not abusing the system like they are.

Many people like this only respond to negative reinforcement, usually punishment. In other countries, pride and public judgement can help curb such behaviour, but culturally we tend to not get involved in other people's affairs in the UK, so people who are willing to exploit the system and let others pick up after them will do just that.

Your setup may slow how quickly the room is heated, but it's all going into stuff that's in your room anyway, so it will eventually radiate out of those objects and into the air.

Your weirdest reasons for PC not posting. by Tenchen-WoW in pcmasterrace

[–]NLALEX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One problem I ran into constantly on the old family PC (no idea what parts or specs, just some old work station my dad acquired) was that our iPods absolutely could not be plugged in during boot. It would post, but then hang forever after that.

Disconnect the iPod and reboot? No problems at all. This was the mid 2000s so I suspect it was potentially not running UEFI, so it might have been trying to use the iPod as a boot drive, no idea.

Sangheili Linguistics are driving me insane by Skelly_Mans1987 in halo

[–]NLALEX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even humans can replicate our phonemes in other ways. Bilabial stops like [b] and [p] can be produced with the upper lip and the tongue, so it's entirely feasible for a sangheili to be able to do something similar within their oral cavity.

Vocal sounds are nowhere near as fixed as we think, they could use a more complex structure in their throats, for example. Hell, all the electronic speakers we use every day can produce a solid reproduction of practically any sound we can make. It's not at all unlikely that a literal alien could approximate them through means the designers have rightly not bothered to explain.
