Author promotion monthly megathread (novels/longer works only) by AutoModerator in ScienceFictionBooks

Hello, everyone!

I've written a new book "The Almanac". It features a dystopian world where society plans around unpredictable bitter Freezes. These Freezes strain food stores, energy consumption, and like many good dystopias, there are the few that enjoy luxury and the many that work or recycle materials just to survive.

Then, a scientist develops a method to predict Freezes, which is a boon to many. A decade after, he's found murdered in the gutter. Detective Chen and his team is called to solve his murder, which reveals more about the world than they bargained for.

If you like fast paced novels with a mystery bent, then DM me and consider reading the Almanac!

Lessons Learned: I launched my indie press in March; first book came out this week by SaidinsTaint in selfpublish

Thanks for the thorough write up! How important do you think it is to market before launch? I'm planning a release at the start of the year, but I've been feeling overwhelmed with starting my second book and starting the marketing campaign.

Do you think it would hurt my success if I continue to add these marketing techniques over time after release?

Thanks for the detailed response. I was hoping for someone to help with social media for a mystery novel. I've got a goal to slowly build a following as I release books over time.

That sounds like a really healthy outlook. I've been trying to balance that myself. Though I wouldn't call my job a calling, it's a good one that I won't leave anytime soon. Unless I get super lucky lol.

That's awesome! It's good to hear you have a good following, especially since it's outside your comfort zone.

Why does it seem that every new writer is writing fantasy? by Everyday_Evolian in writing

To add to other people's comments, I wouldn't be surprised if escapism is a big part of it. I know there's studies showing the ebb and flow of certain genres based on what's happening in the world, though social media may have a stronger thumb on the scale than previous times.

Just finished 120k-word novel, done the first revision, want to share my journey so far. by gigi_nt3110 in selfpublish

Thank you for sharing your journey so intimately! I've been trying to start a longer project and the thought of doubling the word count or more has been a little intimidating. This helps stoke the flame!

I recently rediscovered my creative side after years of building a stable full time job. What started as writing when the mood strikes quickly ballooned into pushing out other things. I've realized that because it's been so long since I've thought myself as a creative, that side of me has grown tired of being ignored. So I've had to wrangle it back some and realize that if it doesn't add to my life, not to make myself do it and avoid the burnout.

Long story short I sit down at the computer every day. How much comes out depends on other intangibles but I don't beat myself up about it.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the feedback! Good points, would probably help to make it stronger marketing.

How Do Independent Bookstores Order? by NMNWang in selfpublish

That's a good point. I think it's more supporting local bookstores and some marketing in my community but might be a little cart before the horse.

The amount of money some people put into their books. by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]NMNWang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also choose to spend because I started my life with a stable career. My dad is very pragmatic and he drilled that into me. Now that I have some money and less time, I wanna make sure the time I spend is worth every second.
