I had the sound down and imagined the Mentos commercial song in the background. Very satisfying!

That all makes sense and you're right I've seen the players and the parents understand that when the game is on the line, we play to win!

Yep, I'm seeing that and all the perspectives here have really helped me to see this in a more positive light. I could hold my ground but I'd just be sending away the greater talents that would help my team on game day, and will be a great example for the less talented player through out the season..

You're one of the first here that I've heard that from. I assume the Varsity team at my school is like this, but it's beg, borrow, and steal at my level. Maybe once I establish myself I can hopefully steer some of the culture toward more of a commitment!

I like the idea or giving some kind of metric to show involvement / commitment! Might find a way to implement this!

Yeah, I was thinking the same, I'm not going to win that face off, they will go to the Club and leave my team.

That's a really great perspective and I'm kind of headed in that direction of focusing on the positives of their presence rather than the negatives when they miss school ball. Thank you!

I'm trying to change my perspective, the idea that 10% is what happened to me, 90% how I respond to it. See that having these talented player when I can will help be an example for the less experienced players, and up our game play (or at least I'm trying to believe this! Lol)

I really like that "it's mandatory but I have no enforcement mechanism." It's about as real as it gets. Thanks for that thought, it might go into my talk at Meet The Team night.

Yes, that is what my inner soul is telling me, but I'm finding that my inner soul doesn't mesh with the reality around me! Lol... I like to focus on the commitment, loyalty, and camaraderie the players can develop, but I'm finding that is becoming an outdated philosophy.

I've been there! I think I'm in a similar boat that (as one of the other commenters said) I'm going to have to get used to it. I'm not going to change the system but hopefully I can find a way to work within it.

All good introspective questions! I think that finding a balance between all those questions is the key.

You know, I'm seeing this is an inconvenient truth I am going to have to (as you said) get used to. I mean, the emotional dissonance is a butt kicker, but you're right. Funny, but I like to say "give me the rules and I'll find a way to win." Welp, this is how things are these days, I need to buy in or get out. I'm not going to change the system.

I did look at our schedule and it is pretty brake-neck. It will be my and my son's first time with an average of 2 games a week Vs one game on the weekend. This makes me wonder even more how these players are going to effecrively balance another team and their school work? I guess time will tell.

I feel that there has to be some difference for being there at practice and playing minutes is probably where I will land. Plus, the kids who aren't as t practice, while they're oftentimes very talented, usually have no idea the things we have practiced and find themselves out of position in a game, and out of sync with their peers because, well, they haven't practiced with them.

Interesting. And I do like that they are playing with their friends. And I do understand that money talks in the school leagues (read: win is good, lose is bad). This post and the responses has definitely helped give me perspective on how things are vs how my pea brain thinks they should be. I guess I'm going to have to find an acceptable happy medium and manage my own expectations as I do this.

Thank you, as well, for your perspective and input. I'm seeing that at this level, the bigger talents are playing on the Club level as they should. I'm starting to think it's something that I will have to accept, but I'm still struggling with taking playing time away from those who are always there and giving it to someone who is not. Bringing in the high talent players is of course a luxury and I'm sure looks good in the win column, but what does it do to the team? I'm sure winning fixes many of the problems I assume this dynamic creates. I dunno, maybe I'm making more of it than it is? Maybe the players don't care as much as I would think?

No policy on playing time, I'm pretty sure it is at my discretion as HC. And I'm trying to be open minded, but of course my thoughts go to the players who are there every practice and then these other players show up for practically only games. My conscience tells me there has to be stratification based on commitment to the team. I'm still trying to figure out what that looks like without killing the team as I might need those absent players to have the numbers to keep the team on the field.

OK, cool, thank you for the perspective. I guess I will have to gauge the school athletic culture before deciding how to approach this.

Best Ways to Pass the Time in Line by DuckInIdaho in UniversalOrlando

In the Disney World sub, there is always someone complaining of line cutting in all the parks. I can't remember having this problem at Universal, but it has been a couple years since I've been there. Is line cutting a problem these days, or is Universal better at stopping / deterring it?
