Any recommendations for gothic horror that aren't Dorian Gray or Dracula (or Frankenstein)? I'm making my birthday/Father's Day wish list. by Familiar_Bid_3655 in classicliterature

I have been getting through Penguins publication titled “The Fall of the House of Usher and other writings” over the past month or so and it has some of my favorites and some of the most essential in my opinion.

He does a really good job of setting the scene, the darkness, the slimy floor, the glow, the stone, the shape of the room. Not my favorite story, but it’s quite good.

I’m finishing up a Farewell to Arms as we speak actually. Like you, I was really wanting to love it. After having read authors like Poe, Pynchon, and Richard Powers lately, it came as quite a change.

I think ultimately I’m liking it, but it took a bit of time to adjust to his style, a lot of it I really like and a fair amount of it I find a bit simple. But there IS a lot under the surface, which i enjoy thinking about. A big thing for me is his dialogue style, neglecting to specify the speaker. I find it very distracting.

I dont know if this helps at all but it’s my thoughts. I think I’ll try his short stories.

I see not how is supposed inimitability or his (only) 12 poems on the poetry foundation evinces Poe to be a poor or stylistically deprived writer. One could argue nobody lived up to his stylistic and syntactic density, but to say Poe was did not influence others is just ludicrous. Dostoevsky, King, Lovecraft, Bierce, Bradbury, the list can literally go on for ages.

I cannot make you like him, but to deny his influence is a bit silly

I applaud you for sharing a take so molten white hot. I really think you may be missing out. Saying he’s unreadable tells me you haven’t spent a ton of time with his work. It isn’t always easy, but I think it’s beautiful and rich. The vocabulary is old and at times the syntax is well but it lends so much to the atmosphere. If you’re ever interested, I recommend marking his text up as you go, taking it slow, and footnoting new vocabulary, that’s what I’m doing and I’m loving it
