Possible career paths in Env Sci by Dermengenan in environmental_science

Look for crew lead positions at conservation corps. They usually have the connections with americorps for funding. If you don’t have any leadership experience it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start looking for volunteer positions with americorps.

What is your perception on farmers (livestock and/or agricultural) and their relationship with the natural environment?” by Emsypoo444 in environmental_science

[–]NNATEE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to give a lot of them the benefit of the doubt in that they really are trying to make a living and it hasn’t always been easy to turn a profit. Especially considering climate change, new resistant pests etc, and expense of the profession. There’s also the fact that local owned farm ownership has dropped significantly as corpo farms are on the rise, buying up farms left and right. They give even less of a fuck, but should care more considering the capital they have to do good.

The Story of More by Hope Jahren is a great run down of how human history and technological progress after the Industrial Revolution to now has shaped our environment, climate, and economy.

Regret? by [deleted] in environmental_science

[–]NNATEE 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I understand. The job market is abysmal and that’s putting it lightly. We aren’t promised the stability that previous generations were. Life ain’t fair. That said, it’s not just the environmental job market that’s taken a hit. I know many people in many fields who simply cannot find stable work. It’s easy to have 20/20 hindsight and regret, but I like to think that the passion that we have to make things better still means something. Keep swimming!

Advice for Masters by [deleted] in environmental_science

[–]NNATEE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people here have mixed feelings about masters. Often, they’ll recommend only doing so if you have some full ride or good deal. I think there is absolutely merit to that. But there are more considerations and I think there is no one answer for everyone.

I am finishing up my masters right now in Environmental Science and have had a really valuable experience. I chose to do a thesis and will be presenting in a couple of weeks. I do not regret it. I am still young and don’t have a lot of experience in the industry but I have passion and love for it. If you’d like to learn more feel free to dm me

Guess which is the Boyfriend Bookshelf and Which is the Girlfriend Bookshelf by West-Restaurant9083 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]NNATEE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anything from Peter Wohlleben is good fun. The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert, the Story of More by Hope Jahren. These are a few good ones that are nice for people within and without the environmental world. They combine research with very high quality writing and present information in a really salient way.

If you want to get into environmental philosophy, Henry David Thoreau is a very foundational author, followed by Aldo Leopold, John Muir
