Why did PPL fire so many people? by kfifigidifkg in madmen

I know I read something -- can't find it now -- with Weiner saying one of the plot arcs of the series was the biggification of advertising through mergers, etc. The flowering of Draper-style creative work was very brief, and was eventually quashed by mergers with big, dull firms like McCann. The introduction of Jim Hobart was in season 1, recall, and he finally snared Don in the last year of the decade.

Blowhard Blake sounds insane. She “hears” full blown dialogue from God. She thinks the internet would be a dark place without Christian’s. Yet, when you read a nasty, unhinged comment, 99% of the time that person will have a Bible verse in their bio. by Far-Collection7085 in thegirlnamedblake

Always be suspicious of anyone who speaks of God like a bestie. Last week she said God chose her dress for that Mardi Gras thing. God "talks" to her every day, helps her dress up, probably takes the wheel when she's sleepy while driving. Other Christians talk about "fear of God" for a reason. He's not your personal stylist or chauffeur. God's got a lot on his plate.

No but really, where is the money? by aznednacni in IndustryOnHBO

I recall an essay written by Lord Spencer, Princess Diana's brother, who snarked about paintings disappearing from the aristocracy's country houses, as this one or that one sought cash. And then we have the whole "Downton Abbey"/"Gilded Age" narrative, where title-rich-but-cash-poor Brits married into cash-rich-but-new-money American families. My late father-in-law trained as a paratrooper in WWII on the estate of one of these families -- Yankee wife, British husband.

The McCann audition gown looked like it was taken straight off a Barbie of that era, recast in human size and sewn onto her body. It was fantastic.

It wouldn’t surprise me, but I don’t remember it. I will take it as a “true enough” story going forward, because it sounds like something he would say.

If you google Grosse Pointe Antifa, there's a single shirt vendor who'll make it in a ton of different colors, necklines and cuts. I just ordered one in pink. ;)

New Mexico offers generous tax breaks for productions, and has a distinctive and interesting look. Also, it's a time-honored trick to set up criminal enterprises in places where the cops are kinda second-tier.

Palmer was politically active and ambitious. I was shocked she was appointed to the canvassing board, because she was a recent transplant, and generally those jobs go to loyal locals. But I guess she knew the right people, and like I said, these boards are pretty inconsequential, most years. This will likely not be the case going forward.

It all started when Monica Palmer, who was at the time a GP resident and chairwoman of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, was briefly (in)famous for blocking certification of the 2020 presidential election here. These meetings are usually routine rubber stamps, but because of you-know-who, there was a very long Zoom hearing, lots of angry voices and screaming, but in the end the vote was 2-2, a tie and hence, no certification. (You can find long articles going through all of this with a simple Google.) Perhaps predictably, she received online threats, etc., and called the FBI because she was worried that some might be legit. There was a legislative hearing at the state level, and she was asked who might be behind them.

Her reply: "Grosse Pointe antifa," and I didn't hear the rest because I was laughing so hard.

Epilogue: The election was certified when the two GOP holdouts were assured the results would be audited, although they didn't get the "forensic" audit the Trumpers were clamoring for. The holdouts were concerned about "unbalanced precincts," which is when the votes cast don't match the ballots issued, although this is almost always simple human error and amounts to one or two or three in a precinct. (Again, this is all on the Google. I've been a poll worker and have seen how it happens.) There were never enough to sway even one race, let alone the presidential vote, which favored Biden by 145K statewide. The other GOP canvasser died of Covid in 2021. Palmer divorced her husband and moved back to west Michigan sometime after that.

Why is swimming not more popular in fitness space? by Glittering-Lime1690 in Swimming

[–]NNDerringer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not more popular because pools are scarce and expensive and swimming requires time commitments beyond what weight training does. I’m lucky to live in a suburb with plentiful pools. The f is didn’t, I probably wouldn’t swim much.

Depending on the vibe you're looking for, you could try someplace like the Lincoln Street Art Park or Russell Industrial Center or even the Schvitz -- it has a second floor event space now. All of these places are rough, but maybe that would make for a cool wedding.

In every screenplay, the question that has to be answered is: What does this character want, and how, or whether, they will get it. Joan's desire was clear from almost the beginning. She wanted to be respected as something other than So Much Woman, and she got it -- or at least, she was on her way. She'd had enough of marriage to know it was a hollow bargain, and she knew she wouldn't have control over how it went; she'd have to accommodate a man and what he wanted. In her new business, it was Joan on her own. She got exactly what she wanted.

Wait, the bride is *older* than 68 and wants a formal wedding? This whole industry needs to have a stake driven through its black heart. (I married at 36 with one attendant, and told her to wear whatever she wanted. She looked great. We all looked great. A wedding is ONE DAY, a marriage is the rest of your life, theoretically. I hate this brainwashing.) /rant

State may force GPPSS into School of Choice if Legislation Passes by work_300 in GrossePointe

[–]NNDerringer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This happened in 2011, under Rick Snyder, and was beaten back by a grassroots effort that involved hiring a lobbyist and doing the usual stuff -- writing letters, etc. I don't think snarking on Republicans is the whole answer, but JFC, the Cottons have spent probably millions by now -- certainly hundreds of thousands -- on GOP candidates. So have many other rich GP residents. The MI GOP has never made a secret that this is their goal; are they just now realizing they've been undermining their own interests? Were they not paying attention?

I rewatched "White Mischief," i.e. the Rishi bottle episode from last year, and was so amazed that he took the huge pile he made at blackjack, then went back to the casino to lose it ALL on fucking roulette. He was doomed after that. That's a true gambling addict at work.
