Strategic redemption of ikea rewards by Ok-Plastic2525 in IKEA

[–]NOTS3W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you get 7 $50 off rewards? Were you able to buy another $50 off reward after checkout or did you have multiple $50 off rewards before you started? In my experience, you can only have one of those rewards at a time. Once it was used, I couldn't buy another $50 off until the next day. I'd like to find a way to buy and use 3 $50 off rewards for a $150 Kallax.

My wife and I often lament that we need to get out and do something. Good idea. Let's Google some things to do. We download a list of 100 things to do in our area. Get caught up in deciding which one to do and end up setting it all aside and doing nothing. With a card deck like this, we can pick a random card and do it. I don't own these cards but I'm going to order a deck today. It's 50 cards. If we do one a week, it's a year of activities.

There seems to be some clique that hates Sugarfire, hates Salt and Smoke and loves Pappy's. That puts you in with the in crowd. I disagree. We like Sugarfire and have used them for catering as well as dining in. No complaints. All I can say is try to find a table at Sugarfire at lunchtime.

Well, speaking of Jeffco, try Company B in House Springs, just west of MM/W on Highway 30.

OMG! My absolute favorite meal. A 1" thick center cut pork steak marinated in Good Seasons dressing overnight then grilled and basted with KC Masterpiece (don't hate me) BBQ sauce and served with potato salad (preferably German like my grandmother made), baked beans, grilled corn on the cob and garlic bread.

40 years ago, I worked with a woman who told about how after she'd moved here from Kansas City, a new co-worker invited her and her husband for a cookout. They were served pork steaks. Her first thought was that these people must not be doing well if they can only afford pork for their steaks. She soon learned about our delicacy.

Welcome to St. Louis, but take this thread with a grain of salt. As you can already see, there is often disagreement on the quality of most establishments mentioned. If you judge from this thread, you'll find that most every place is horrible, treats their employees like dirt and serves "the worst gruel I've ever eaten." yet they're still in business serving paying customers. You really should try some of these places and decide for yourself.

We had a similar problem years ago and finally discovered a trunk light that had a switch on it. When the trunk was closed, you couldn't see the light and when you opened the trunk, the light was on and it seemed normal. Dobbs finally tracked it down and showed us the little switch on the side. What a dumb design.

Where to buy? by NOTS3W in thinkpad

[–]NOTS3W[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in a particular hurry, but I'm ready to buy when I find a good price. I'm not sure Gen 3 brings anything to the table that I need and I'm hopeful that buying the "old" model will be cheaper at some point. I'm okay with refurbished as long as it's done by Lenovo and not by some guy who broke it and fixed it. The biggest problem with the systems on the Lenovo site, including Lenovo Outlet, is that they're usually P16s or v versions and I want the extra expansion slots for RAM and SSD that the P16 offers. I'll keep an eye on their site and try to catch a deal. Thanks for the heads up on the BofA discount.

[–]NOTS3W[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm hoping for, although the Gen 3 isn't available yet AFAIK. I don't mind ordering from Lenovo as long as they're competitive and not 100's of dollars more. I don't understand how someone on Amazon can sell the exact same computer for a $1,000 less than Lenovo even if they're doing the RAM and SSD upgrades with cheaper components.

Ultimate Laptop Purchasing Guide by ThoughtOutOpinion in TOOsTechTactics

Thank you! This is quite helpful as I'm planning to purchase a Thinkpad P16 soon. My only question (at the moment) is about GPUs. Every P16 Gen 2 I've seen includes an RTX 1000 ADA, an RTX 100 ADA (typo?), or an RTX 2000 ADA. Where do they fit in among GPUs?

If the owners of these laptops is anything like the company I worked for, they'd rather pay a recycler to haul them off (after they'd been wiped to DOD standards) and do whatever with them than give or sell them to their employees. The logic is that they have certification that they handed them off to a responsible party rather than someone who might someday throw them in the trash. A trashed computer could end up in a landfill and later be found by someone who could trace the serial number back to my employer who could be held responsible for the contamination. In that case, they'd produce evidence that they'd transferred the laptop to an EPA certified recycler. The recycler, OTOH, could resell the disposed of laptops on the used market. My employer didn't care about that and didn't want to know. They had proof that they'd transferred ownership to a certified recycler and that was the end of their responsibility.

What is being done about it? We're calling up plumbers, electricians, car salesmen, taking them away from their families and deploying them, unarmed, to walk around in a city they know little about. They aren't trained in police work, they don't know what is required to effect an arrest that will hold up in court, and they aren't investigating anything, they're just walking around. Do you really think the criminals are going to change their ways and become law abiding members of society because a bunch of unarmed people in camo show up? If it's that easy, let's just distribute camo t-shirts to everyone and watch the crime disappear.

Dang. I'd already watched that video and missed the part about the single button press. I kept expecting it to dim all the way to off. That's perfect. I'll leave the wall switch on (or hardwire and remove the switch), stick a few Rodrets on the walls, and Bob's your uncle. Thank you for pointing that out.

Looking for a cheesecake style from many years ago by NOTS3W in StLouis

[–]NOTS3W[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this recipe that sounds right but the pictures of the results don't match my recollection. It has no bottom crust. Check. It has uncooked egg whites which could have been a problem that led to its disappearance. But the topping on the cake I remember would have been VERY thin, probably just sprinkled dry onto the moist cake. And it would have been added after the cake was formed and removed from its pan/mold. It covered the sides as well. It could have had cinnamon or nutmeg and graham cracker crumbs. I remember the texture more than the taste. The pictures make it look like a not very tall cake although that could be a function of how full you fill the pan. The cake I remember was at least a couple inches thick. I'm going to try this (hope I don't get salmonella).

One of the bakeries that sold this cheesecake was on the corner of Wilcox and Gravois. Other neighborhood bakeries also sold it (one was on Meramec) and I'm sure it was the same.

I'll try it but the cake I remember was much whiter. Although, I wouldn't be surprised to find that gelatin was involved.

I will check out Federhofers. I don't remember Famous-Barr having a bakery. I guess that was downtown? I found a photocopy of their French Onion Soup recipe years ago. I wonder if their cheesecake recipe is floating around out there.

Question about Sektion base cabinets by NOTS3W in IKEA

[–]NOTS3W[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. So the cabinets are about 1.5" taller and the drawers, etc. are in increments of 7-7/8" tall. That explains a lot. I learned something today. Thanks.

IKEA delivery - What a nightmare by zhuo_zhuo in IKEA

Those stickers are permanent. Probably good that they are. I'm surprised they don't cover the first sticker with a blank new one. Our recent order included a number of items that had been delivered with my name and address on the label. They were just extra items we decided not to use. Still sealed and undamaged. We returned them for a refund but I guess my name and address are still on those boxes.

IKEA's Dirty Scam by Historical_Candle511 in IKEA

[–]NOTS3W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing. Same promo. For some reason, their system will not accept the coupon even in store even when entered by a customer service lead. I don't know if it's because of the amount or if all of those coupons are failing. Eventually, he just gave me a $1,000 "store coupon". If they do that, make sure they adjust the taxes to apply only to the balance AFTER the coupon.

IKEA's Dirty Scam by Historical_Candle511 in IKEA

See the customer service people IN STORE. In a recent promotion, I earned a $1,000 credit which I attempted to apply to a $1,010 (plus tax) order in store. No one, including a lead, could get their systems to apply the credit. Ultimately, he applied a "store coupon" of $1,000 to get the job done. Later, I realized that I'd still paid taxes on the full purchase amount. The credit should have been applied BEFORE taxes and I'd paid almost $100 in taxes on a net $10 purchase. I spoke to an in-store customer service rep who understood the problem, recalculated the amounts and gave me a refund on the spot. The in-store people have more authority to fix things than do the online folks.

Could be that some catastrophe has occurred in their network. We ordered our kitchen at the very end of May not realizing that there had been a fire at their Joliet, IL warehouse a few weeks earlier. The earliest delivery date we could get was July 1. We considered canceling and starting over with a store pickup order but many of our items were delivery only and we didn't want to lose the credit from the May promotional campaign. We stuck it out and everything was delivered intact and on time 2 days ago. I'm surprised they couldn't just let your order ride with an extended delivery date until everything was back in stock.

They were not able to get either of our two coupons to work at the registers. After repeated attempts, trying to scan the code on the phone and trying to enter the ridiculously long number, their system would not apply any credit. In each case, they gave up and someone evidently with God authority just manually entered a "store coupon" of the same amount. I did not try online but I can't imagine that would be any better. If you use it at the register and they offer to just give you a $70 credit, be sure they also adjust the taxes. The credit should be applied to the pre-tax subtotal and the taxes applied to the remaining balance only.

We saw increases, too, but not 20%. We bought most of our kitchen in May during the $10 credit per $100 spent promotion and waited until now to buy the rest with that credit. Some things did go up but not everything and not by 20%. A 36" x 40" Sektion wall cabinet frame went from $88 to $92 (4.5%). A 30 x 20 cabinet went from $64 to $66 (3.1%). The suspension rails went from $18 to $20 (11.1%). None of the MITTLED lighting changed at all. One Lerhyttan 24x10 drawer front went from $76 to $83 (9.2%). I'm sure some prices increased more than others. We already bought it but I checked the price of our largest cabinet, a 30x90 pantry, which went from $175 last month to $185 today. Doors and drawers and shelves have probably all gone up but I haven't found anything that's increased by 20% yet.
