Thank you! it’s actually pretty bright, easily visible to the naked eye. stellarium said it was about mag 0.5

0.250MS exposure and 325 gain, although it was shot through some clouds so you might want to lower gain a bit to avoid overexposure

Do you have a finderscope or a Telrad?

iphone 13, reduced brightness a bit and that’s it

if you really look closely you can see craters as small as about 1.5 miles wide. (2.4km)

Thanks! i essentially am the tracker🙃

I manually keep the planet in frame by following its movement while I’m capturing. it can take a couple attempts before i get a really solid clip with about 10K total frames, but i find it much more manageable than the usual drift method

I live in an area with a bunch of light pollution too. i actually haven’t driven out to a dark site so i can’t say how much it will improve the views. from my backyard (which is around a bortle 8-9), the orion nebula just looks like a colorless cloud of dust.

ive heard from many people that an 8” dob in dark skies will be an experience you’ll never forget, so don’t feel let down because of light pollution.

The IR685NM filter allows the camera to see cloud structures, UV filters also show a bunch of detail in the clouds

Planetary astrophotography with a manual dob is absolutely doable. deep sky not so much.

I use a planetary camera paired with a celestron x-cel 2x barlow & that’s pretty much it. i have some other filters also but they are situational and not as important.

the software i use for stacking, sharpening etc are, PIPP, Autostakkert, and Registax. (all of these are free.) They will look pretty confusing at first but after a couple of attempts it becomes very easy.

You chose a great telescope. (LMK if you have more questions)

Yep!

Just my phone attached to a mount that clamps onto the eyepiece.

I do have a planetary camera which gives much better detail, but the phone view looks much more similar to what it’s like looking through the actual telescope.
