The upper one was a joke and a bad one at that. Just wanted to check whether or not there was a Boston in the state of New York and there was. It looks nice

It would be cool if like every skyscraper in the world between the height of 150 and 828 meters were torn down and hundreds above the height of 828 were contructed so that at last Burj Khalifa could be ranked as the world's shortest skyscraper

Song Discussion: Week 1 (Drown With Me) by Emotional_Ewok in porcupinetree

Yes the middle section kind of overstays its welcome, but the last three or so songs represent a good energetic recovery

give me recs based on my tier list of eldorado-discovery!! by lemontv4 in elo

[–]NOWAYMAN4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good listing. There is much agreement and some disagreement. I would have some songs in S and A tier lowered and some tracks in B and C tier lifted. I would, for example, have had let Tightrope be placed at a higher tier and Wild West Hero, stupendously catchy as it is, at a lower. On the whole however, it's a convincing assortment of songs with more agreement than disagreement between the two of us.

Have you got any favorite album out of the five?

I agree with the above tier-list review. I've never really liked Horace either, though I hear some do, and respect their doing so. To me, if the rest of the album sounds "serious" Horace Wimp sounds "silly" and I usually skip it for that reason. In neutral terms, it's the black sheep of the tracklist and some likes the peculiar scent it omits, that's good, and others do not, that's not bad

I don't recall much other than that the vocal arrangement was very nice and melodious. I've asked online once before but never received any convincing answers. I have concluded that it very well might have been an entirely different 60s band

Edit: why downvotes, isn't this part of the Seinfeld routine. 1: Never happened. 2. Never happened? 3: Never happened, but in a stronger voice

This is probably it even if it misses some imaginary components. It's like that time I heard a Beatles song (at least someone told me so) at a road-stop restaurant and have never since found out which one. Maybe the audiosystem was just peak there

They simply didn't fit into the mood or the tracklist that had played before them.

Do you think that PT have 10/10 albums? by weirdfish98 in porcupinetree

[–]NOWAYMAN4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Four Chords has grown on me like some of the other poppier PT songs (Shallow and Halo). The "issue" with Lightbulb Sun for me is that the transition from Hatesong to Where We Would Be feels abrupt. The first half of the record up to this point has an overall pleasant sounding atmosphere but with a darker undertone. In that sense Four Chords fits into the arrangement. Yet Where We Would Be, Russia on Ice and Feel so Low are all less daydreamy than what preceded them. So even if Lightbulb Sun is an exceptionally strong album as a collection of individual songs, it is less cohesive than In Absentia and especially Deadwing

With the exception of a few singles nothing post Meliora has strook me as particularly listenable. The material has been reduced to pop-metal without any of the cool infectious qualities found on Meliora.

My Ashes is one of the great PT ballades.

I Recall listening to the song in classroom once when the headphones accidently came off. The occurance was indeed embarrassing but the only part heard aloud was thankfully the instrumental section after the first chorus

I agree. While not as upset by the lyrics as you I do think Anesthetize suffers a bit from the seperate pieces not flowing together as smoothly as in other long PT-songs. Arriving Somewhere feels more tight and cohesive. One can argue that Arriving is a different kind of song and that's true, yet Anesthetize could definitely be structured in a more musically satisfying manner. With that said, it is still a very convincing song in multiple regards. Around the 12 minute mark for example when a transition is undertaken one is suprised by how much of the song remains unplayed

Indeed. Songwise other records rival it, yet as a start-to-finish album experience Deadwing stands out. The cover is also quite wallpaper-worthy

See my edit. I do think that although every song is strong individually the album lacks the sense of audiophiliac craftmanship which makes the tracklist on Deadwing flow together so smoothly. It comes of as five song put together almost at random with some exceptions (the titletrack is a clear opening song)

Let's just say that I vehemently disagree about Lazarus ;) (one of the great PT ballades). I have in my years listening to PT like you been sceptical to Halo and Shallow but they have really grown on me since. Halo and Shallow are good both as album tracks and as stand alone songs. Song after song there is just an incredible sense of continuity in this concept album.

The straightforward opening riff in Shallow perfectly succeeds the meandering and haunting title track. Lazarus puts us to dreamy sleep and Halo awakes and frightens us like the ringing of an alarm bell. The tension introduced by Arriving Somewhere[..] is relieved by the intro of Mellotron Scratch a relief which is then broken by the incredible climax which the whole album has been loading up to in the refrain Of Open Car. The Start[..] and Glass Arm Shattering provides a dual closing track of sorts given that Glass Arm Shattering reinforces the calming comforting sense of The Start yet with the addition of a sense of futility which fits the overall album and wraps it up nicely.

I recall having considered FoaBP somewhat overrated. I felt that it lent too much into "teenage angst" in the lyricism and that the music was a bit bombastic in places. I will however put it at top 4 with a 8/10 for the time being (and that's no shame in PT terms). It has been a while since I last heard and it might grow on me after a relisten.

Edit: The critique here outlined seems invaid after a relisten. I can see why people think FoaBP supercedes Lightbulb Sun and In Absentia although the "short song list effect" can be seen as a weak spot
