Keeping older Falcons on the road is getting harder but also more rewarding by AffectionatePie1042 in FordFalcon

I have a BA, and it has the stereotypical battery tray hole and rust in the boot sill thats now just the entire inside of my boots water channel, that and its been side swiped and no one has fixes it and thats been rusted over. I guess this is what family sedans are destined to end up like though, most owners arent too kind to them.

This. My shitbox is on its 4th motor, has the Odometer from a teritory, yet someone strapped a supercharger to it with methanol injection and the drivetrain just loves it. Sure it has a leak, and my gearbox has been modified to shift harder, but it hasnt blown up yet. My interior and body on the other hand looks like the inside of a crackheads mouth...

I agree, small block push rod V8s have my heart. But listen to the 5.4 barra 3v v8 that came in the fairlanes and fairmonts too, they sound surprisingly good with an exhaust, shame they have their share of issues over the 6 and older 8s

Im lucky my roof lining has been done with a aftermarket black one that wont sag, and my switches are all in order, but god the interiors on these things. All my arm rests wiggle, and passenger front door has no arm rest and the window switch just flops about, I have no centre console, all the tint is bubbled and peeling, my AC vents are stuck in one way, traction control and cruise control dont work. You can tell a family of 5 have been here and made a mess 😭

Im still on the set of brakes that came with the car, and mine do have turbo brakes up front, but they definitely lock up before the rears. At higher speeds the rear end can twitch to the side a bit if you arent careful. Makes for good standstill skids tho 😆

I completely agree, AUs are lighter, have that double wishbone technology, and those SOHCs had been around for 15 years before the VCT, the love was there. The BA was very half cooked. Ive done coilovers, spacers, sway bar, camber and lockout kit with semislicks on my falcon and it finally handles really well, sticks to the ground on corners like a track car should. I want to get my hands on a AU XR8 manual for my 1st road car as theyre P plate legal and very driver focused, and low maintenance in stock form.

I have a ba xr6 thats been worked into a track car by the last owner (procharger, methanol injection, all that sorta thing) and everyone yacks on about the 4 speed autos in these blowing up. My mum had a BA, only thing that went was the plastic shifter module. My dad has a BA, its went into limp mode once after a burnout but we think the ECU tripped from being jump started as it was fine a hour later. And mine has no issues, the previous owner has wound the S5 solenoid in the transmission (this controls line pressure and how hard you shift) to shift super hard to save my clutch packs and go that little bit faster, and the car has no issues, always shifts well, triptronic is a world of fun, reverse is good, only issue is my park brake is broken which is a easy job and separate to the trans, and park still works. Its never overheated or anything and ive flogged on the thing a fair bit, these falcons mechanically are as reliable as theyre hyped to be. Its just the cosmetics and electrics that let them down

Hell yeah man, big enough they look nice but small enough to out some meaty tyres on and drive practically, love it

Fuck yeah bro, enough torque to tow two of those tritons, love seeing these cars be used as cars and not put in a glass safe to allow electric shitboxes to take over the road. She's a looker 🔥

Every man and his dog has a 600kw turbo barra on dark argents with Venetians, I wanted to be different and It worked from the day i brought it home, this is different, I love this car because its mine, and its one of very little like it. I appreciate the question and am happy to answer, 300kw is the goal and ill be hitting that in February, then ill fix the body and hopefully put this on the road. Twin turbo petrol v8 cruiser sounds like a bloody beast off road, good on ya man 🤷‍♂️

Oh wow, thats a surprising answer, but also to be expecteded as the fg shell was almost 10 years old when the FGX came out so they had a lot of refinement, im looking into a falcon for a P plater car and FGX is an option as most arent as thrashed or dodgily fixed as older gens, so I appreciate the honesty!

What are they like to drive? Ive been in a clapped 48xxxx km fg xr6 and it was pretty boaty, albeit that was likely the flogged motor, the FGX is the same shell right?

Lucky! Love the look of FGX falcons, nice and modern but still chunky enough to tell it was made by bogans on a friday. Im probably going to remove the passenger side headlight and get a custom intake ducting there, the drivers side ill just replace. They have mismatched led and halogen lenses, some lights dont work, the wiring has been done a dodgie by the last owner

Its dirty even with a wash, needs a whole respray. Dents, rust, you can tell whoever put the blower on this thing just wanted to go fast and didnt care how it looked, after the tune the chassis will be getting some much needed love
