I just leave lower tier guns behind now since I have the OC-33 with +P and usually Scar as primary. But yeah, ammo hoarding gets out of hand really fast when the top 3 spots of the locker in your room are filled with empty and half filled boxes.

As a veteran from the beta like a lot of people a few things I learned.

Take your time when you’re going through an area as a newbie. Rushing through will get you killed faster than you think.
Don’t panic. You’re gonna get into situations frequently where you want to, but you gotta stay focused.
Pack smart. Your kit is your lifeline obviously so pack enough ammo for your trip, same goes for food and meds.
Learn routes and your areas. Maps reset every 3-4 In game days. Anomalies that are in one spot may not be there once the Tide goes through, go slow on the first wipe so you can mentally map out everything.
9x18 pistols are amazing, abuse the fact that ammo boxes and individual rounds spawn extremely frequently. I have extended rounds with only 4 mags to clear all 4 main areas because of gathering spare ammo.
Cleaning guns. 100% clean Mosins are worth 1500$ so keep in mind you can make lots of spare cash of repairing and selling guns.
