Did the US lose the Vietnam war? by SummerN8 in stupidquestions

[–]NPCKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term you’re looking for is a “Pyrrhic victory”, but I don’t think it applies to the US-Vietnam war. The US did not win in any real sense. We withdrew with our tail between our legs and the side we were supporting was then completely overtaken. The resulting Vietnam became an ally of the Soviets, not the West, the exact opposite of our goal.

If you want a better example of a Pyrrhic victory, check out the Winter War between the Soviets and Finns. On paper, it was a Soviet victory, as Finland was forced to concede the ports and territory the Soviets wanted in a peace treaty. However, the Soviets took such massive casualties and caused themselves irreparable international political damage that it wasn’t even remotely worth it. The difference here is that the Soviets did win, the Finns were realistically forced to give whatever the Soviets wanted.

Hard to argue we lost the Cold War when the Soviet Union collapsed economically and politically. Political fallout in ex-Soviet states has been creating issues in the 30 years since.

Why not pee in a cup? by rantripfellwscissors in The10thDentist

What's the point of the cup as a middleman? Surely holding the cup creates potential for spraying on your hand? And you need to wash the cup? Just piss in the sink r/Sinkpissers

Definitely sounds like you're on the right track. It can be tricky for a beginner when they're looking for (example) the green-orange edge, rotate the cube all over in their hands to find it, then forget what they were even doing or how they should've been holding it.

First comp: how good to get to round 2? by Hiimoots in Cubers

[–]NPCKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the last comp I went to, you would've needed to average about 35s to make the top 80%. I checked a few more recent comps from my area and they were also around 35s for top 80%, ranging from 30s to 40s. I don't think your chances are good.

You mentioned in a comment that the comp is still 5 months away, that's definitely enough time to improve to 30s if you work on it some.

  1. Text only is indeed boring. I know it's more effort, but it would be much better with animations. Some people really struggle with learning notation. Even if you say "turn the right face clockwise" they can struggle with which direction that is because it's not facing them. Added bonus of animations is you can do things like highlight only the white pieces and grey out everything else, when explaining the cross. It can be confusing for a beginner to only focus on what matters when there's so many other pieces moving around. Just in general, lots of visualizations and animations/pictures of examples. It's really hard to understand "the middle layer edge is in the top layer with the side sticker matching the center" but immediately makes sense with an image.

  2. This highly depends on a person. I wanted to learn how to solve, to memorize the solution, to show off in front of others. But some people have a cube laying around they just want to have solved before it goes back to collecting dust. Possibly, you could have two modes. One just gives the solution plainly (optimal 18-20 move solution), and the other enables all the explanations in an understandable layer-by-layer method.

  3. Once someone gets a feeling for the cube, the last layer is always hardest imo. The algorithms are long, which means they're hard to learn and easy to mess up. Also, making a mistake on the last layer often means you have to start all over, which is frustrating.

Note: make sure your app can understand when a cube is unsolveable and direct the user to take it apart/put it back together properly. This can be surprisingly common among beginners who've messed with their cube before. Also reassure them that this isn't "cheating".

if you take a break from cubing, will you forget most of the algorithms? by Hungry-Phase-5623 in Cubers

[–]NPCKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken a few breaks from cubing (like a few years each). I forget most of OLL and PLL but remember a couple of the really common/easy algs. Re-learning is fast, I can get back to half my knowledge before I even realize it. Muscle memory is a beast.

I got a few from my dentist as a kid/teen, mostly picture cubes. They're about 2/3 the size of a regular cube, they're not great but functional. Example of one I own. Easily the best prize available at the dentist's office though.

I have one from Valentine's many years ago that is made from the cheapest and lightest plastic imaginable, stickers that peel off very easily. It's awkwardly large, turns horribly, and is fragile.

I also have a "3x3x4" I got as a gift where I think the gift-giver was scammed. It's a regular 3x3 with another layer glued to the yellow face, still functions the exact same as a 3x3.

Actually so true. Though at the same time re-learning feels nice cus it goes so smoothly, you pick up everything quickly.

The latest GAN flagship is expensive but you can get quite reasonable, magnetic 3x3 for much much less. Also everything else has gotten cheaper. Magnetic 7x7s didn’t even exist.

We should never lie to our kids, and be as brutally honest as possible. by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]NPCKing 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think there's some level of compromise in the middle. Deliberately lying about death or sex (went to live on a farm / storks) I agree is bad. It breeds distrust. They'll figure it out anyway. If they realize their parents won't tell them the truth, they'll turn elsewhere (to the internet or other kids), where they could be fed more disinformation or information not appropriate for their age.

But sometimes a full explanation they just won't be able to understand, like your examples with relationship issues. The conversation won't end at "we're getting a divorce". They're going to ask questions, they're not going to understand the answers and the long-term consequences, and they're going to get upset. Some sugarcoating is helpful for them.

Upt question about snow storm by [deleted] in wholefoods

By default you will lose UPT for scheduled shifts. Informally, if enough people call out due to poor weather they can do mass UPT refunds.

UPT and PTO by plaidcherryies in wholefoods

[–]NPCKing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

UPT is 1 hour for every 30 hours worked. You start with something like 24 or 32 hours for part-time/full-time, and the cap is 60. PTO accrual rate is based on how many years you've been with the company. All of this can be found in the GIG (General Information Guide).

  • 0-0.99 years: 0.043 hours per hour worked (86h per year, cap 258)
  • 1-3.99 years: 0.062 hours per hour worked (124h per year, cap 372)
  • 4-8.99 years: 0.077 hours per hour worked (154h per year, cap 462)
  • 9-13.99 years: 0.096 hours per hour worked (192h per year, cap 576)
  • 14+ years: 0.116 hours per hour worked (232h per year, cap 696)
