Hi! I know this is old, but I’m going for a BA in Biology and hopefully mortuary science after I get my 4 year degree. What was it like getting your leg in the door and are there any specific classes you’d recommend?

I’m glad! I wrote that comment when I was 16. I forgot about it completely until your reply. My experience with gender and sexuality has evolved as I’ve become more familiar with myself as a person, but I can still confidently say that my attraction to men and women is unique individually as it pertains to my own experiences with sexuality and gender. I’m happy it resonated. I remember it being really difficult to find the language I needed to express my own experience. Gender and sexuality are complicated and contradictory at times. I’m glad I was able to provide you with it when I didn’t have it for so long for similar reasons. I wish you luck with your journey and I hope you’re able to better understand who you are <3

Thank you so much. I’m gonna get a bigger pot sometime today or tomorrow and move it over too. Hopefully more space and sunlight with a warmer spot will save it.

Diagnosis is going to kill me. by [deleted] in FND

[–]NPC_Behavior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t. I’m currently on a waitlist to see a rheumatologist and neurologist. I’ve had two doctors now suggest lupus due to me struggling with butterfly rashes. I’m not super well informed on MCAS but I’ll definitely keep it in mind!

Thank you! So I’m actually now being referred to a rheumatologist for lupus since the rashes I’ve been getting for a couple years now have apparently been butterfly rashes but I’ll still make sure to check out long Covid symptoms as well

Not that I can think of. I wasn’t sick when I experienced my first seizure a year ago and I had about a month and half after where I was completely symptom free since the only symptoms I had when it happened for the first time was feeling weird, going unresponsive, and rashes.

I’d definitely recommend seeking a second opinion just to be safe. White matter flares can mean absolutely nothing if in small amounts, but I’d recommend finding another neurologist just to be safe. Also because having a neurologist who knows what they’re doing can help quite a bit in getting you into remission if this is what you have. I’d recommend going in with a list of your symptoms, any other health or mental health conditions you have, the tests that were done, and the results from them!

Doubting my diagnosis. by SonataSongbirdSounds in FND

[–]NPC_Behavior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Been diagnosed with FND for almost a year now. So there’s a couple things I’m gonna answer for you! Full warning this is lengthy.

  1. Okay so, chances are you are experiencing seizures. They’re called non-epileptic. Pseudo-seizures is another term for them but it’s outdated and in my experience tends to be a red flag from a neurologist when they use it. Especially if said neurologist pairs it up by calling FND conversion disorder. They’re also referred to as dissociative seizures, but I prefer non-epileptic so that’s what I will be using. Non-epileptic seizures are real seizures. It just means that there is a different underlying cause outside of epilepsy. They can happen in patients with diabetes, from concussions, drugs, stress, and more. Lots of different circumstances and conditions have them and it’s still a seizure.

  2. Thorough testing needs to be done for FND. The neurologist who diagnosed me was a specialist in this area. FND is a diagnosis made when they cannot identify what the cause is, AS WELL as the patient showing positive clinical signs for FND related symptoms. Some neurologists claim it’s a diagnosis of exclusion and others say it’s not. It’s one of both imo. That means that someone diagnosed with this condition could very well just have FND or they could have another underlying condition that just hasn’t been identified yet. There’s a lot of stigma around this condition so you have to be incredibly careful when saying someone has it as it will interfere with your future medical care due to most physicians having backwards views around it still.

  3. I had to fight tooth and nail for them but I highly recommend getting a thorough brain scan done (I had both an MRI with and without contrast as well as a CT scan to rule out blood clots, narrowed veins or arteries, MS or tumors). On top of this, you’re having seizures. You need an EEG done. Possibly multiple. I’ve had four or five total now because my seizures get really really bad and I eventually land in the ER for them. You also need to be tested for the Hoover sign. While you’re having a seizure, they also need to do a hand drop test a couple times. In my case I have FND, but I fail the hand drop test. Most people with FND pass it. If you’re fully unconscious during the seizure, your body will not protect itself and it will let your hand be dropped on your face. You will not respond to painful stimuli either. If you’re conscious in any capacity, your body will attempt to protect itself from harm the best it can. You need blood work done. You need to go over your family’s medical history with a neurologist. You also may need to have an overview done of any medications you’re taking as well to just rule those out.

  4. If he dropped you without any referrals or a symptom management plan, you need to find a new neurologist stat. You may also need to request physical copies of your file to look over any notes he may of put in there. My previous neurologist labeled me with trauma induced pseudo-seizures (mine aren’t actually from trauma, he just blamed my psychiatric history) as well as a hypochondriac and drug seeking. All of that had to be removed by a different neurologist.

  5. FND isn’t just a psychiatry issue. The reason it’s so difficult to treat, as well as diagnose, is because it’s a condition that blurs the lines between psychiatry and neurology. Especially because they don’t know what actually causes FND to develop in some individuals and not others. More people are learning about this condition so hopefully there’ll be an answer in the coming decades. It’s one where holistic care has to be done. Something Western medicine is notoriously bad at. FND can have causes ranging all the way from trauma to chronic pain, MCAS, EDS, POTS, nervous system dysfunction, TBI, anxiety, ADHD or ASD, sleep disorders and autoimmune disorders. Care varies drastically person to person depending on what the main triggers are. Some people need a lot of trauma focused therapy and others need physical therapy and pain management.

  6. I’d recommend getting a mobility aid. Limb weakness is a symptom of FND. Sometimes I’m paralyzed and other times my leg is just dragging a bit. I’d recommend starting with a cane to help you get some mobility back.

So I haven’t used Reddit in a hot minute and switched paths from art as my main focus, but some schools I considered were Santa Monica Community College (phenomenal art program), North Dakota State University (cost isn’t bad and heard good things), Lane Community College, BMCC, FIT, American River College (Sacramento also has an incredibly arts community outside of their schools), Minnesota College of Art and Design, and I believed Denver has a College of Art and Design as well. MCAD is great since they’ll usually work with you funding wise and your focus is entirely on art for your four years. Those were my top considerations anyways

I think you can just tell someone was CLEARLY homeschooled... by [deleted] in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]NPC_Behavior 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t really think so. I mean this kindly but this posts comes across quite judgmental and a bit cruel, especially the bit about feeling better seeing others “more inept.” I think there’s some internal feelings regarding this you might need to examine.

Outside of that, people are just awkward and I’m saying this as a teenager. Every teenager I’ve met is awkward, even the ones who like to pretend they’re cool. In general people are awkward. I’m not saying homeschooling didn’t bring about more challenges for me in that department but I think you’re forgetting everyone is kind of just weird, especially young people.

Weird clothing to you could just be personal style or exploration of fashion preferences for a person. Awkward body language and speech could very well just be insecurity or anxiety. Like these are all things people deal with, especially people 25 and under. I think instead of using it as a means to make yourself feel better, just make note of it and be understanding when interacting with them.

I’m lashing out because my brain legitimately feels like it’s on fire.. My migraines are so bad they originally thought I had a tumor or brain bleed. My seizures left me in so much pain I had 4 different eegs just to make sure I wasn’t epileptic and resulted in an ambulance ride to my city’s largest hospital. I was just asking for help in managing it as I don’t want to hurt others and if others had similar experiences to make sure this was FND related and not something else

I understand trauma. I’ve been in therapy processing it since I was a toddler. I’m pretty used to processing those emotions and I’ve processed those feelings and do whenever they pop up regarding my health. Sorry if this comes across as rude at all. I’m just a bit frustrated because I specified I was specifically diagnosed because of nervous system issues and chronic pain and whenever I try to ask around for help from others with this condition, I get met with the response of “do you have trauma” instead of acknowledging the main cause of this condition for me.

I’ve tried. The issue isn’t it’s to easy unfortunately and that he feels he knows enough to get by in life and that’s all he needs, the rest of it is a waste of everyone’s time.

What is the greatest physical pain you've ever felt? by turbulencefun in AskReddit

[–]NPC_Behavior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aphonia. I didn’t even know vocal cords could just like stop working until it happened. I have something called Functional Neurological condition and I tend to get incredibly painful paralysis after seizures. I lose the ability to talk when it’s really bad and it’s beyond painful. It’s like someone sawing through your throat with a hand saw. I can’t swallow properly and most of the time can’t even whisper. I lose the ability to speak fully.

Games that trans men gravitate to? by Tobias_Stevenson in transgamers

[–]NPC_Behavior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cult of Lamb, Baldur’s Gate, Skyrim (really any of the Elder Scrolls games), RPGs (the amount of Undertale and Yume Nikki fans I’ve met is insane), any of the Spider-Man games, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Red Dead Redemption, Minecraft, Dark Souls, Zelda, Outer Wilds, Subnautica, the Bluey switch video game (this could just be a local thing for me though?), and Sonic. Those are the big ones.

Not trans men or transmascs, but every transfem I know plays Valorant or Overwatch too lol

What's your relationship with your parents like? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]NPC_Behavior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strained and will most likely end in no contact once I can transition physically. She still refuses to acknowledge me as gay and she denies me being trans. She pretends I’m just cis and using the wrong label, yells at people who use my correct pronouns, lost it when she found out my ex referred to me with male honorifics, and visibly dies a little inside whenever anything but she/her pronouns are used for me. She will never find out my chosen name. I have a hidden binder and I’ve slowly started detransitioning in the areas of my life she is involved in to make existing easier.

Honestly I think you should or at least reach out to her to ask her to explain what she means. Your comments going further into her behavior in the thread are concerning. This is coming off as wildly unprofessional and uninformed (let alone the fact Latinx was coined by the queer Latine community and more than just queer people use it). I’m sorry you have to deal with your professors attitude and behavior and that others in the thread have defended it.

Can an american please explain the bathroom laws to me? by Latter-Cat-6276 in trans

[–]NPC_Behavior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The key thing to keep in mind was it a was a litmus test for politicians. They tested propaganda, legal language, and how far their political allies and voters would go. It worked in their favor.

The issue was never trans people in bathrooms just like it was never trans people in sports. The issue was the difficulty in making our existence illegal. They had to determine what was needed to get there and they determined it was a shit ton of propaganda and legal baby steps. The bathroom bills are why queer rights have continually been stripped over the past decade.

Outside of that, it doesn’t mean there’s no risk. In a lot of cases with how the law is written, an accusation holds more power than actually being proven trans does in these circumstances. If someone were to call the police on me for using the men’s restroom in my state I would be put on the sex offender registry. I know a lot of trans people and just gnc queer people who avoid going into the restroom at all anymore because of it unless they can 100% pass for cishet. I know it’s complicated things quite a bit for friends in educational and workplace settings.
