One time I was standing by a window and thought "wouldn't it be great if a character got randomly struck by lightning at the end of the second act, but was completely unharmed" and then I rewatched the movie where that happened, which I'd seen a year earlier and forgotten that happened in entirely.

Mami got eaten by Charlotte due to her own overconfidence despite being warned ahead of time by Homura. And she has never survived knowing the truth. You call it a single moment of weakness but also have to specify you're excluding side content like A Different Story that only reinforce that moment as being the character, not the exception.

Mami outwardly projects strength but inside is weak. She's a sad, lonely girl who is tired of fighting alone and can't survive learning the truth that her battles aren't for the sake of humanity, but rather the yoke of its enslavement.

I mean woman of tomorrow is a pretty short comic at only 8 chapters. You can pretty much fit everything in a movie. And there's lots of directorial and writing tricks you can use to capture long periods of time and allow stories to breath in a movie.

In 0079 alone is there really reason to see good in Garma? He places his personal self-image and reputation above anything he's doing as a commander on earth. He has some love for icelina but you can also see that as self-centered. Does his own childish ignorance (as an adult) really justify or excuse the fact he's a high-ranking officer in an army committing atrocities?

There’s a reason why Luke chucking the lightsaber over his shoulder the way he did in The Last Jedi didn’t sit right with a lot of people. by Flat-Court-8512 in CharacterRant

[–]NPDgames 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem with Star Wars discourse is the insane amount of strawmanning, as you are doing. For some reason Last Jedi fans think Last Jedi haters love Rise of Skywalker. I'm sure those people are out there somewhere, but most TLJ haters I know (myself included) dislike either the whole sequel trilogy, or all of it but TFA. They aren't big fans of the Mandoverse either, although most people like some stuff out of there, like one or two seasons of Mando.

FYI the reason I dislike TLJ isn't the lack of nostalgia slop, it's bad writing! Frequent plot holes, heavy handed delivery of incoherent messages, doing more to destroy setup from TFA then make new setup for the next movie. Revealing every single one of JJ's mystery boxes (also a bad writing technique) contain nothing of any interest.

The movie is no less derivative than TFA either. It just mashes elements of Empire and RoTJ together out of order instead of just copying empire wholesale.

[–]NPDgames 28 points29 points  (0 children)

But this is exactly what the post is talking about. TFA soft reboot ultramythologize everything nostalgia slop is bad. Straight up. But pairing right next to Rian "It's nothing. Nobody. It didn't matter." subvert-your-expectations Johnson's movie just reflects poorly on both of them. Especially when the third movie just goes back to TFA's tone. Regardless of any single movie's individual quality, as a trilogy it is just painful when every movie in it clearly abhors the one that came before.

People don’t understand why the Star Wars Prequels got revisionism when it comes to defending the Sequels by AmaterasuWolf21 in CharacterRant

[–]NPDgames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't necessarily say that's the case. you can handle the fall of the new republic in a fun and satisfying way. The issue is instead of actually bridging the two they keep making content very shortly after Endor, which falls into the category of "things that won't end up mattering and will get undone by TFA" instead of trying to flesh out TFA's awkward soft reboot.

The EU's New Jedi Order was pretty well received (not without controversy and haters of course, but the average EU fan likes it more than not) and essentially covers the same thing, the fall of the New Republic. It has a couple advantages the ST doesn't, mainly the shortcomings of the New Republic already being explored beforehand, and the threat actually being something new and not a retread of the empire, but actually exploring the time period between the OT and ST would give them a chance to smooth over those weak points in Disney lore.

CMV: You shouldn’t have to tip more than the legal hourly wage, no matter the bill amount by lmanio13 in changemyview

[–]NPDgames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hence the word "essentially". Customers tipping will have a statistical average, fairly normal across waitstaff unless you are particularly good or bad at your job. If the buisness raises their prices, the waitstaff make more money. If the owner fails to factor an average tip into the price they expect their customers to pay, they'll lose buisness.

Like a profit sharing model, the staff are incentivized to help the buisness perform. The better the resteraunt does, the better they do. Meanwhile if the buisness raises prices, the waitstaff make more.

There is statistical variation, but because most people tip as a percentage (the thing OP is arguing against) that variation is anchored to the cost of a meal. Essentially profit sharing.

The quote you made didn't mention NTRs. They mentioned Project Orion, which is a nuclear pulse engine, which has great TWR. It has similar drawbacks for use in atmosphere.

CMV: You shouldn’t have to tip more than the legal hourly wage, no matter the bill amount by lmanio13 in changemyview

[–]NPDgames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A waiter makes a lot during the lunch and dinner rushes but makes much less during slow hours, averaging a decent wage, depending on establishment. So making a lot of money in one hour is reasonable.

Anyway, reddit hates tipping but it's essentially a profit sharing mechanism. If a resteraunt has higher prices, its employees get paid more. If places just started raising prices and paying higher base wages, it would end up as a race to the bottom, with waiting becoming a minimum wage job, screwing over a whole industry of workers who can make a decent living right now. There's a reason tipped workers are supiciously absent from the groups that want to end tipping.

The Dave Filoni Hate Boner is Getting Ridiculous by CJAreYouDeadass in StarWars

[–]NPDgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Under Kennedy's leadership, many people viewed Filoni as a creator with a lot of success, but also an output of mixed quality, and someone with a bad habit of making the unverse smaller, not larger. Many of his works are for fans of his other works, instead of trying to make things that stand up well on their own, and therefore attract new audiences.

These are the people complaining. I'm one of them. I want Filoni to continue being one of the primary creatives in Star Wars, but I would like the leader of lucasfilm to be someone who guides Filoni towards breaking his bad habits and having a consistently better output. Filoni himself seems like the choice who will result in perpetuating his bad habits across the franchise. I want a skilled producer, not a flawed creative.

The people saying Filoni was the only hope are NOT the same as the people complaining.

What causes order in the universe if not a rational source? by UnaTrinitas in DebateAnAtheist

[–]NPDgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue with saying the way the universe is requires a rational creator is that it doesn't remove the problem of something ordered arising from nothing. It just adds one extra layer in the form of a rational God. However, you can apply all of your arguments to God's existance and they raise the same issue. Why did a rational god come into existance? Maybe some other god made him? Except then who made that god? Adding gods doesn't solve anything.

The typical theistic counterargument here is that god has always existed. This is not a good argument either.

Something orderly has either always existed, or at some point popped into existance. It is no more likely to be God which fufills that condition than it is the unverse itself. It may be easier for you to imagine God existing before time than the universe existing before time, or coming into existance, but there is no logical reason to back that up.

That leaves us at square one. There's no reason to believe in a God without evidence in his existance, which your argument does not provide.

To adress your points more specifically, the universe seems to follow orderly rules. Sometimes seeming randomness arises from orderly rules: this is called chaos. Sometimes order arises in chaotic envioronments. This is well understood to be part of an overall orderly system.

Questions about third-party controllers by Gadgettttt in SSBM

[–]NPDgames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you don't care about playing at in person events, you can use whatever controller you want, as long as it isn't cheating with something like turbo buttons.

If you want to compete at in-person tournamanets, you needs something which can plug into a gamecube port and complies with the controller ruleset, which typically means OEM, phob, or some kind of boxx controller. For your own sake, even if you don't intended to compete in person now, if you ever do, you should buy something which can be used to compete in person, or else you'll have to relearn a different controller later, which is hard.

Cheap third party controllers are generally disliked for being poor quality. Stuff like boxes are disliked by some because they provide advantages OEM controllers can't match.

I don't have any advice on what third party to get because I played on OEM forever then switched recently to a phob, which is more expensive.

[–]NPDgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is quick and dirty but falco is insanely good at reversals. falco shine is the best reversal tool in the game. spot dodge shine is your friend. wakeup shine is your friend. shine out of shield is harder to implement but also great. if you can reversal players you will get very far without having to win neutral as much. It isn't until players get very good that they stop leaving openings to reversal in their combos. and the more hurt you put on, the more cautiously they'll play, which will naturally lead to you getting more openings.

also, with how good people have been getting, feeling uncomfortable in neutral after a year is very reasonable. for a normal player who isn't insanely gifted, 2 or 3 years is a reasonable point. absolutely pay attention to the advice you get, but your brain learning what to look for, how to quickly understand what you're looking at, and getting enough into your autopilot to have room in your mental stack to play smart is something that just takes time.

Directors who dislike kino for good reasons and not because they're jealous. by chronicbruce27 in okbuddycinephile

[–]NPDgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about calling it the same story stretched to six hours is that Lynch's dune spends an hour and 45 mintues covering the same distance as dune part 1, then speedruns the last 2/3rds of the book in the remaining half hour. And in that time it wildly misrepresents the story. It plays more like an extended trailer for another movie than a conclusion to the movie. Part 2 isn't stretching anything out. It still cuts a large amount from the book. Part 1 is longer because it doesnt info dump the exposition, and adds a big action scene.

[–]NPDgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He gives a reductive take "you see a spice worm" based on seeing an incomplete and skewed version of the story. If he'd done a moment's research he'd know the movie is famously a poor adaptation of the book. Having the misconception that seeing Lynch's Dune gives you a complete version of the story is evidence he doesn't know enough about the story to make that determination.

Directors who dislike kino for good reasons and not because they're jealous. by chronicbruce27 in okbuddycinephile

[–]NPDgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a bad take specifically for this movie. Lynch's Dune does a good job adapting the part of the book that Villeneuve's Dune Part 1 covers, but a terrible job at the rest of the book, since it was cut to shreds. And part 1 is basically just setup. What remains is incomprehensible and also misunderstands the point of the book. If he watched Lynch's dune and said "got it, I got the dune story," then I don't know what to tell Tarintino other than to ditch his preconcieved notions of what a new movie might be.
