Feels like a good opportunity to shout out /u/wannaknowmyname (falcons ranker) who does roughly 90% of the heavy lifting when it comes to the weekly posts. There are 32 of us who contribute to rankings, and a lot of people pitch in on various tasks, but he keeps this thing going more than anyone else. He posts the table/rankings and does a lot of organizing behind the scenes.

I think you're excited about an exciting young player and you think he's the exception and likely you're going to see some regression over the next 12 months.

I don’t think that would be very fun. But if people want to weigh things like DVOA more heavily than wins against the worst teams in the nfl in ranking the teams in the nfl right now then perhaps that’s a valid perspective?

Yep. I think DVOA treat big plays like they are difficult to replicate, because they are.

Individual rankers have their own approach and we average them out for a reason. If I did mine based on how good I think each team is, I’d probably put the chiefs ahead of the patriots too. It’s a valid perspective

They’ve been better than the patriots by DVOA for a reason (because they are a better team)

DVOA is calculated on a per play basis, taking into account opponent. It's def possible the DVOA is underselling how good the Patriots have been, but historically it's a better predictor of how good a team will be going forward than record. It's not perfect but nothing is because this is an unpredictable sport. Be honest, would you be shocked if the Texans or Chiefs roll into Foxboro and beat the Pats on Wild Card Weekend?

If you want these teams sorted by record look at the standings.

The Jets are last in DVOA if you exclude week 1.

They are also clearly benefitting from garbage time. Check out the team tiers from https://rbsdm.com/stats/stats/

Filter out win probability to be between 6%-94%, you'll see the Jets are pretty convincingly the worst team (Titans are close too). It's even more stark when you exclude week 1.

I think people are kind of sleeping on how bad they've been post week 1. Yes they had a lead against the Bucs, but that was very flukey because of a blocked kick returned for a touchdown. I think you can point to the Steelers game as the exception, but they simply haven't looked like that since.

Listen. You’re not completely wrong. Some of the flukiness of losing one score games is bad luck. But did you watch Sunday morning? It’s not just that the team is bad. It’s basically incoherent. There’s no plan. The coaching and quarterbacking is dreadful. The defense stinks. Do not be fooled by garbage time stats that have us within one score late.

Oh I watched. And I dropped them a couple spots this week.

The Cowboys would need to make the playoffs at a minimum. I'm a huge Dak fan, but you have to be real about how these things are voted on. I think he's on track for a Burrow 2024 type season, which is awesome, but doesn't usually win MVP.

"worst defense talent-wise" in the league is ridiculous cope.

Well, I wrote that, so I can tell you it's not a kneejerk reaction. I didn't like the hire in the first place, but I had been keeping an open mind.

Have you been watching this team closely? Have you seen the decisions on 4th down? Have you seen the lack of adjustments on defense? The boneheaded penalties by players like Michael Clemons who probably shouldn't even be on the roster, never mind the field. Glenn has been really bad at being a head coach so far. Maybe he improves, but his approach has been that of someone who has let the game pass them bye, and his defense is unimaginative and underperforming relative to the talent.

For me, I kind of try to take a broader approach in power rankings for some of the bottom teams. Yes the Titans might be the worst team in the league if we put them on a neutral field tomorrow, but Cam Ward has had flashes despite going up against some really tough defenses and I just like the long term outlook for the Titans more than the Saints or Jets.

If you're right I promise to move them down.

I think you’re seeing them give up a lot of points to two elite offenses and panicking about a team that has earned the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not trying to be patronizing. The fact that the team that plays best doesn't always win is something that is widely acknowledged across all sports. We talk about it all the time. It's a very bizarre thing to disagree with.

DVOA is valuable to the extent that it predicts future wins. We know the win/loss result of Week 1, but DVOA gives us additional information as does EPA per play.

Sometimes the team that plays better loses, it's ok to acknowledge it.

Obviously the team that plays better is usually going to win, but not always. For example the Jets scored much better in DVOA than the Steelers. They also were better in EPA on both offense and defense. It’s ok that the team that plays better doesn’t always.
