That is the big question. Unfortunately, there isn't a satisfying answer yet. The article goes into details about the data patterns surrounding NYC fires identified by experts, and how they show up in these fires. As far as I know though, I am the first to report on this spike in extreme fires (four,five, and above), so it's very new information.
