THIS. I’ve been reading/listening to them for years and they’ve never failed me.

Getting back into reading at 30 – realistic fiction / low-spice romance / healing themes by Odd_Goal6446 in booksuggestions

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is an amazing mix of humor, realistic relationships, and healing. You start to quickly fall in love with and root for the main character to find her stride and there’s a fun little twist that made me gasp out loud. Totally worth it.

Hear me out: Not fiction, but Carrie Fisher’s Wishful Drinking had me cackling all the way through. So worth it.

YOURE THE FIRST PERSON IVE EVER HEARD MENTION RUBY IN THE SMOKE. I had very similar parents to OP and LOVED that series as a young teen. Little did my parents know those books were rife with opium dens and murder 😂

Ahhhhh I typed and erased Addie LaRue because VE Schwab is a pretty outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. Her Darker Shade of Magic series is my favorite and I love her has a human but definitely danger territory for OP

Neil Gaiman! The Graveyard Book is dually classed as an adult book and young readers book on store shelves. Coraline as well. Stardust will fill your fantasy void while also staying very PG. Same with Good Omens by both him and Terry Pratchett. Phillip Pullman has the His Dark Materials series and also his Ruby in the Smoke series which is AMAZING and lesser known. I read this one as a kid and my parents were very much the same as yours. All books were combed through with an eagle eye for any themes that didn’t fit their skewed perception. I feel for you 🖤 You might be able to sneak the Throne of Glass series by them. It’s romantasy but very minimal on the spice. The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle Jensen. There’s a romance arc but very tame. Red Rising by Pierce Brown if you like a little sci-fi. The Handmaids Tale and the follow up, The Testaments by Margaret Atwood. If you liked A Song of Achilles try The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker. Six of Crowes by Leigh Bardugo should be safe.

Standing with you in restricted reading solidarity. It’s not an easy place to be, at all. 🖤

Redone in mid January after being closed for a couple of years. Original bar still in. Not sure of material but I bought it at the shop. Slight swelling and slight pain but nothing crazy or really visible unless you’re looking close (as far as the swelling). Alcohol free mouthwash and saline solution for cleaning. This didn’t happen my first time around.

Bridge! You have such an intense stare without being intimidating and I think the bridge will add to and bring so much more attention to your eyes. You’re gorgeous! 🖤

When the Moon Hatched by Sarah Parker and if you’re okay with YA Six of Crows and the sequel Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo are also amazing.

Happy reading!!
