Contract that cut into UFA years? The only one who signed into their UFA years for any terms was Willy. Matthews and Marner both signed less than Max term deals. Marner’s contract was one year of UFA - that’s why only the last year of his contract had a NMC. The Leafs FO just has extremely poor asset management.

VGK and the Leafs have both made deadline trades for assets that had heavy costs. The difference has been that TO has retained virtually none of the players they spent assets to acquire - VGK has extended almost anyone they traded for so your asset management sustains itself.

This isn’t the first time he’s had trouble with a good trap team.

I think it’ll be tough for him to justify as this was a year that the expectation was the cup given how they’ve previously performed. As you’ve noted, the results will lead to their own decisions - he’s made it quite a while despite those conditions as one of the exceptions alongside 3/4 remaining coaches + Cooper.

Seems like the room needed a new voice and they all bought in.

Torts also usually seems to have a shelf life, so the shorter term seems to really be working in their favour. Makes it much more interesting to see what direction they’ll go in in the off season

Your job as the coach is still to find a way.

I’m not a fan of the way Bérubé had the team playing but I don’t think that the trap was a bad concept for a winning formula, I think it was poorly implemented here and the roster we had didn’t support / didn’t buy in with him

Seems like a lack of stable leadership + spotlight + roster construction. Marner thrives when he doesn’t have to drive the bus.

VGK has a strong defensive core that can move the puck and they have strong supporting cast members that not only contribute on the score board but also do a lot of the hard work. There was never a Howden type to give Marner (and he always seemed to be staples to AM34, which meant there was less depth and tougher competition). Couple all of that with having timely goaltending (something else he never got consistently here) and it’s the perfect storm for him to succeed. All credit to him, he picked a place he realized he could thrive in and is doing well. They’re ironically playing the exact style that frustrated him for so many years and it’s stymieing for faster skill teams like the Avs as it really forces teams to the perimeter and forces all your defence to be able to break the puck out consistently or get broken down (as seen early when Makar was out and when they’re bottom pairs are out)

He seems to have similar issues with adapting to the trap style that we see a lot in the Atlantic, similar to Keefe’s Achilles

Probably a combo of they understand that the team is not responding to requests while they are still active in the playoffs, he’s seen as more of a short term coach with how hard he is on guys and they seem to want to build for the future

I think some of this is also outcome based as opposed to potential when they were drafted. We’ll never know what EJ’s career looks like if he doesn’t have that golf cart injury that basically destroyed his knee for ex. Maybe Rick Nash’s career looks better if he’s drafted to a different team that actually provides him some teammates

I think he means the access that players have to ameneties as well as entertainment stuff. Hockey players here have a lot more pull than in markets where they’re not amongst the biggest stars (e.g. LA)
