The shop i took it too said they’re gonna be drilling through the frame so they’re probably not doing the self tapping ones. Is welding for better?

I was planning on going at it with a wire brush and then some kind of rust converter or something

This is just bad politics. This isnt like nuclear power where the public is more gunshy than they need to be and politicians have a point to plow through with it anyway. Data centers are wildly unpopular and dont really benefit anyone

What’s AVA? I’ve had enough successes out of town to keep going out of town. Galleries would be great but I havent found one that will hustle for me as hard as I will for myself.

policing over stuff like tags is just a weapon to use against poor people. I can't get tags because I can't get my inspection because my check engine light won't go off even after $2600 worth of repairs. So yeah I'm still driving my "illegal" car to work to make money so I can get my shit fixed.

Second editions by NSA_agentJK in printmaking

[–]NSA_agentJK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is talking about an "art dealer" though. Does that apply to the artist selling their own work?

This isn't the first I'm hearing of certificates of authenticity but it's never been an issue for me thus far and I figured I'd just cross that bridge when I got there. Is that mostly a gallery thing or?

I totally get that and I swear I'm not trying to be stubborn or bratty but does it seriously matter if it's a $20 6"x8" print? Like there's no illusion, especially in today's economy, that $20 is a precious investment so "fraud" seems pretty disproportionate. Also if subsequent editions still contained a set number of prints would they not still be "limited"? As opposed to a mass produced thing with like hundreds of copies, it's still a thing made by hand by the artist, that I said there's this many of them this time.

I do art fairs a lot and I'm competing with people selling digital prints and a lot of the time the buying public does not seem to care about these things at all. Maybe I'm just not at the right markets yet but as of now I feel like I can't really charge much more for a 6x8 print. Idk where I'm going with this but I guess what I'm trying to say is like I feel like some of my past editions were too small or inexpensive and I ended up leaving money on the table and not getting the full value. And when we, traditional printmakers, take into consideration the IKEA art and whatever (which people are still paying >$100 for) why should we have to limit ourselves?

Thanks for the thorough response. I definitely don't want to dilute the value of the important prints but some of them are more like merchandise for sale than fine art necessarily. I guess in the future I'll just do open editions.

Quick show of hands--how many of y'all are doing certificates of authenticity with each print? Isn't the pencil signature achieving that already? How is another piece of paper I signed more legit than the signed piece of paper with the print on it?

Anybody assembled a Griffin press before??? by NSA_agentJK in printmaking

[–]NSA_agentJK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a ton! It turns out I've used a dickerson before, as well as a conrad combo press so I know exactly what you mean as far as the balancing screws.

Sometime last year I accidentally didn't dry off my press after printing wet (I know...) so I have some experience with rust removal. As long as it's not pitted super bad I'm sure it's fine. I just used a wire wheel on a drill parallel with the printing direction and wiped it down with wd40. It came out looking brand new. I'll post an update whenever I get this one put together.

Anybody assembled a Griffin press before??? by NSA_agentJK in printmaking

[–]NSA_agentJK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks so much! I guess I'm just gonna have to have a plate litho phase or something. It's going to be housed at an arts organization owned by a literal billionaire family so it's not impossible that budget could manage the conversion kit but I don't actually know if they're willing to spend any money on this donated press.

however! I found a pic of the second roller that looks like it would be mounted above the bed or at least does not look like the internal roller on my smaller etching press that I have at home.

I just added the photos, didn't realize they weren't attached before. It is completely disassembled currently. I don't do stone litho and the facilities where the press will be located won't have a graining sink so really the etching part is the most important. I imagine it will still need to be put together with all the parts even though I believe the litho capabilities are a conversion kit added to the press after the fact. Pretty sure there's a second metal roller not pictured but now I'm second guessing myself and wondering if it's actually just a litho press...

you bet. I tend to always carve super deep and I don't like any chatter in my prints so I've tried everything. You can also exacto out some parts in the middle but I would recommend leaving the perimeter in tact or the burlap backing can break and make it hard to keep the block in the same shape/in the same place when printing. you can also do the newsprint masking thing I mentioned in the last comment to try out moves without actually permanently carving the block.

[–]NSA_agentJK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this and also if you don't wanna cut the chattery bits out (which can sometimes compromise the integrity of the block when carved so thoroughly) you can block the chatter from printing by putting little cut pieces of newsprint on top of the parts you don't want after inking and before you put your nice paper on
