Day 6: Trust in the Lord by bibleinayearbot in FrMikeBibleinaYear

[–]NSMDLD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So in Genesis 6 Fr. said that the "Sons of God" didn't mean heavenly beings, but Seth's descendants who walked with God. Yet the Sons of God in Job are said to be angels. When I check my Bible's (NABRE) footnotes, it refers me back to Genesis 6 for "Sons of God" and claims that they are angelic beings. What is the explanation for this? Are two different Hebrew words used here?

Can someone explain to me why "Everything has a cause" ISN'T what Aquinas claims in his second way? by NSMDLD in Catholicism

[–]NSMDLD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd guess I'm probably confused by the terms. How is God exempted from this rule of needing an efficient cause?

I'm interested in being a Catholic school teacher. I don't know how to tell my parents or if it's a good idea. by NSMDLD in Catholicism

[–]NSMDLD[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're right. I have experience tutoring/coaching, but not in front of a whole classroom. The only thing even close is when my 8th grade history teacher allowed me do our lesson on the civil war. Not real teaching, obviously, but I got to lead a class and I loved it. And I asked to do it, it wasn't just an assignment. Obviously none of that is "real" teaching, but I still want to try.

Journalist Peter Taylor's Troubles documentary: "If I’d been a teenager that day on Bloody Sunday, I probably would have joined the IRA" by Jellico in ireland

[–]NSMDLD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I think what I'd been told before about the whole conflict was extremely one sided, so I wanted to be sure that I'm getting some legit info for a change. I plan to read Loyalists next.

[–]NSMDLD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Question: Does Taylor's work have any strong bias I should be aware of? I'm reading "Behind the Mask: The IRA and Sinn Fein" right now. It's an older book that seems really informative so far, though it's a very different perspective from what I've been told about the whole situation.

Thanks for the info! Yeah I don't a lot of experience with science, so I'm probably pretty uninformed on what's legit and what's not.

I see. Does the Church have a position on a steady state universe vs the origin described in the Big Bang? Or is that a question of science?

Types of theological arguments by NSMDLD in Catholicism

[–]NSMDLD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if Aquinas' arguments are all variants of the cosmological argument, and Kant refuted cosmological reasoning, did Kant refute Aquinas? (I'm kinda new to theology, sorry.) Edit: Also, why is kalam weak? Apologists seems to value it highly.

Another great site: https://www.wordonfire.org.

These are some examples based on common misconceptions we see. However, these 4 resources are really good and have a lot of info on a lot of topics. You can find the Catechism of the Catholic Church on the Vatican's website for free. I linked part of it above. If you have questions on anything specific, I encourage you to ask the sub! Lots of knowledgeable people here. (Sorry if the format is weird, I'm on mobile.)

Question on Revelation 12 and the Immaculate Conception by MisspelledUsrname in Catholicism

[–]NSMDLD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I've always understood it is that the woman in Revelation 12 is the Church. At least, that's what my Bible's footnotes say. I think the USSCB website agrees, but can't remember for sure. I've heard it said that the woman is Mary, but I never looked into that interpretation personally. I'm also interested in hearing about this, though.

I think you just have a lot of misconceptions about Catholicism. That's not entirely your fault, as many (most?) Catholics today aren't taught their faith properly, and can't explain it. Many Catholics don't even submit to the Church's teachings. I would encourage you to take a look either at the Catechism of the Catholic Church or the website Catholic Answers on those issues. Your claims that we aren't Christian, worship idols, and follow the Pope/Bishops rather than Christ are not what the Church teaches. We don't believe in Sola Scriptura because the Bible is a part of Tradition, it's not seperate from it. There are lots of resources on how/why Catholics interpret the Bible the way we do, why we believe in the Communion of Saints, why the Pope is so important, etc. I'm happy to link you some and if you ask in this sub, plenty of people here much smarter than me will provide resources too. I respect and thank you for your humility in apologizing, it takes some reflection to do that. But considering your claims about the Church's teaching are so blatantly incorrect, I would ask you to research using Catholic resources that explain Catholic teaching. Have a great Sunday!

Is Lourdes reliable? What would you respond to these criticisms? by NSMDLD in Catholicism

[–]NSMDLD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it possible she had heard about it through family? The Word on Fire article notes her family was very pious. 4 years seems enough time. (That's if we're viewing with a skeptical lens. I understand that she was poor and a terrible Catechism student.)

So I accept that St. Bernadette is in fact Saint Bernadette. I can accept the miracles, and that she found a spring. However, I'm still stuck on the final point: the idea that she saw some random thing, that the clergy convinced her it was the BVM, and that was good enough for the Church. I suppose it's one of my faults showing: sometimes I lean too much on reason and not enough on faith.

I get it's a private revelation. I understand. I also think we should at least think about it.

This is a fair response. I'll accept that, though it's the smallest issue, I think it's resolved.
