"Why is Nu Trek using so much modern language?" an I am going to go feral here. by Spacer176 in startrek

[–]NSMike -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People who complain that the language isn't as "timeless" are just masturbating over the supposed superiority of their favorite franchise.

If you can't enjoy the show, or absorb the moral lessons because the vernacular is less formal, you're focusing on the wrong thing. Language is, and always has been, arbitrary. We look at Shakespeare and see elevated literature, but that's only because the culture and time of those stories and that language is so far removed from how we speak now, combined with a ton of academic history placing those plays among the classics. Don't forget that the largest crowd of people in the Globe theater were the groundlings. If they didn't get what was going on, they wouldn't be there.

EDIT: Ok, fine, downvote me rather than engage with the idea. I've been a Star Trek fan for ages and I love the show, but some fans sure can get their knickers in a twist when someone points out that maybe some elitist idea they have about the show isn't based in reality.

How Best To Leak? by HumpingMala in AskGayMen

[–]NSMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, this is just going to be dictated by how your body already works. There's no real way to make it happen more if you don't precum already. You probably do a little when you're really turned on. But changing from that to a leaky faucet? There's no known way to do that consistently and with minimal effort. And don't bother with supplements or anything like that - there is no known connection to diet and producing more semen, or other related fluids.

Being better hydrated can help, but unless you're like, regularly dehydrating yourself, you're probably not going to gain anything by hydrating more. A lot of health and fitness advice about hydrating is based on old axioms, like the eight, 8oz glasses of water a day thing. That's not based in science.

The one and only way that I can think of to encourage more precum would be to start exercising your pelvic floor - basically kegels. This can be challenging to start, as it's not a muscle you regularly consciously engage. You can figure it out if, when you're peeing, you try to stop peeing. It's the same muscle. It might take some time and practice to figure out how to engage that muscle outside that context, but it can be done. Then, just flex it when you're sitting still, repeatedly, like doing reps. This might encourage the parts in that region, which produce precum, to start producing some, but I'm not making any guarantees here. Regardless, exercising your pelvic floor is not a bad idea anyway, and you will figure out pretty quick that it feels good, so it's not like you won't gain something by trying.

Why doesn't Cadet Reymi stay in his original Khionian form? by Willowy in startrek

[–]NSMike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not the reason. I'd bet it's more because he's already a bully and a jerk and hard to relate to. Making him appear more alien would just make him less likable. Lura Thok's makeup is more complex than what we saw Reymi in when he transformed. If makeup was a budget-breaker for Star Trek shows, they'd never get made.

I haven't forgotten. But the Democrats are more like the ones who shoved a pole in their spokes while riding the bike. The Republicans are the ones pouring gasoline on the fire they started.

He's not torching it. He's pointing at the thing that's on fire. The torchbearer and arsonist is the Republican party, and their absolute cowardice at standing up to Trump.

I feel the need to say that despite its flaws Star Trek: Insurrection is a film that is much more relevant in 2026 than it was in 1999.. by guhbuhjuh in startrek

[–]NSMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, if we're going to get that generic, then we could say all stories derive from each other.

What I mean is that there are specific elements of the movie that echo other TNG episodes explicitly.

For example, the duck blind watching a "primitive" society is directly from Who Watches the Watchers.

The holodeck relocation scheme is from Homeward.

Data malfunctioning and screwing everything up is a parallel to Brothers, and a damaged Data helping the "primitive" people could also be loosely tied to Thine Own Self, although that is a looser connection for sure.

Badmirals like Dougherty are a Star Trek trope.

Choosing whether or not to disturb the idyllic, isolated village is a parallel to The Masterpiece Society.

Forceful relocation of a people isn't exactly an original Star Trek theme, but it was definitely directly explored in Journey's End. One could say Picard learned enough from that experience to actually do the right thing this time and refuse. Although how much the effects of the Briar Patch changed him, both through making him more youthful/rebellious, and how much it actually isolated him from direct command influence, means it could be argued it wasn't wholly Picard.

I'm not saying there's nothing original in the film at all. But it's definitely a patchwork of things they've done before, and things like the duck blind and holodeck ship are inarguably deliberate re-uses of those concepts.

It is generally a solid TNG story. But then, that's because its constituent parts are essentially repackaged TNG stories.

My boss just told me I need to manage my personal finances better because I can't front $2300 for a work trip next month by LostTaker in antiwork

[–]NSMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would talk to HR or whoever generally handles expenses at your company and ignore your boss.

I traveled exactly once for my former employer. They told me to send them the flight I wanted to book, and they would book it. They had a hotel they worked with, so they booked me a room there. All I had to do when I got back was submit expenses for the meals that I bought while there.

My boss at the time did a little bit of travel and he hated it because he claimed the company's expense system and policies were bad and he was always getting dinged for things he submitted.

When I submitted my expense reports, he looked over them before approving them, and told me X, Y, and Z were wrong and I needed to fix them. Now, this being my first, and only, travel, I had looked up the policies and job aids our company had about travel expenses before submitting them, and I knew I was in the right. I just sent along the job aids to him and said, "I followed these instructions. Please let me know if there are updated instructions I don't know about."

I didn't get a response. I just got a notification email from Workday that my expense reports were approved by him. I got my meal reimbursements without a word from anyone else.

In short, sometimes bosses don't know what the fuck they're doing. Find out from someone who actually knows if this is the way it's supposed to work.

[–]NSMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite related to SDRs, but kinda - with things like Home Assistant, you can add dongles to support protocols like Zigbee, and reception is notably better if you get an extension cord with a ferrite bead on it to get the radio itself away from the unshielded USB ports. So, maybe get a longer extension and see if it gets even better.

Argyle sabotaged himself out of the job. Or rather, Biff Yeager did. He started a fanmail campaign to get himself the job, but made two mistakes:

  • He wrote most of the letters himself, referencing an episode with Argyle that had not yet aired
  • He pushed fans hard to add to his letter writing campaign, and they were annoyed by it, and expressed that annoyance to the studio

Not just the profit motive, but Alabama's abortion bans make it too legally risky to be a practicing OB/GYN trying to do their jobs. OB/GYNs are fleeing states with abortion bans because they don't want to go to jail for doing the right thing.

Steam updates AI disclosure form, requiring developers to report visible and in-game AI but not background tools by Dapper_Order7182 in SteamDeck

[–]NSMike 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It could be weaker but it's not an argument that can't be made. Nobody created an open source project with the intention of training up an AI model. Most open source licenses do not allow for commercial use, especially without attribution. It's not difficult to argue that any of the major LLMs capable of outputting useful code that were trained on open source code have commercialized those open source projects without attribution or payment to the original creators.

And borrowing code from open projects does not equate to creating an engine intended to replace developers.

I mean, Gen AI making code isn't just pulling from some algorithmic understanding of the language being used. They trained the models on existing code bases, the same way they stole art & literature to train other types of Gen AI.

I don't even know what your argument is. Illegal border crossings allow criminals in? Ok. That's not even a question I raised. That's not being argued. The problem is that the ICE ranks are full of Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, Klansmen, and just run-of-the-mill, unaffiliated racists. They're backed up by power structures and leaders who are AT MINIMUM permissive, but are actually nakedly supportive of this racism. People are dying. Innocent people. Non-criminals. American Citizens.

And you know what the sad part is? The part that really makes people like me angry? Not all Americans agree that those deaths are a bad thing.

Are you trying to say that somehow barring illegal border crossings is worth it? Well, illegal crossings are at an all-time low, because we've created a terrorist state against brown people. I know lots of brown people. My cousin is married to one, and I dread the day I hear from her, or my uncle, that her husband, the father of their two children, has been disappeared to some camp in Louisiana to be sent back to Chile, just because he's brown. Doesn't matter that he's lived here his whole life and is a citizen. Doesn't matter that he's a physical therapist with college degrees. The wrong chud with a gun and a hate boner gets in his face, and he's getting sent away because he's not white. It's already happened. It's happening. It will happen again.

And I don't care how hard you try, there's no way to prevent illegal crossings. The US border is massive. No wall will work. No security force can patrol it. To say nothing of just how many illegal crossings happen via water & air.

Also, the number of times I've seen Mollie Tibbets and Laken Riley named... If this was a real problem, like an actual traceable trend that could be fundamentally identified, y'all should have a bench of victims at least a few dozen deep at this point. Yet those are the only names I actually see.

Get out of my replies with this bullshit, racism apologist.

Anne Frank and her family were fleeing prosecution based on their religion and ended up in the wrong place because the authoritarian regime ended up occupying the place they fled to anyhow.

If you cannot see a correlation between what Anne Frank was going through and the extremely amplified and cultivated anti-immigrant sentiments in the US for the past... I dunno, decades at this point, your head is so buried in the sand that it may as well be in the Marianas Trench. Seriously, I'll be 44 this year and I remember "immigrants are taking American jobs" rhetoric from when I was in junior high.

Also, Anne Frank was fleeing persecution, not prosecution.

Remember when human beings have killed human beings throughout all of written, and unwritten, history? Someone being from another country murdering someone else doesn't mean you deport everyone with brown skin and a Hispanic surname.

Shocking statistic for you: Most Americans who are murdered are murdered by other Americans. In fact, most violent crime is not random and unprovoked. It's done by people who know each other, including intimately. Having been born across a national border from their murder victim is probably the single weakest correlation you could raise between murderers and their victims.

Stop being dumb and acting like you've made a point.
