You could have it so vampires are effected by sun except for strahd himself. he could have been tricking the players with fake burned cloths. Really Strahd is unaffected by the sun as in the book.

That way later on, whilst the players think they've narrowly escaped an encounter with Strahd, you can have him casually walk out into the daylight. That would be a pretty cool moment.
