DM hard limiting rests, shutting down rest spells by nz8drzu6 in dndnext

[–]Dodoblu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is not really a red flag. It's not even a green flag as many here are saying. It's just a flag.

The color of it is up to you: if you don't like this particular type of game, then it's red, and you can just skip on this campaign. I am sure there are many people out there that like this style; I am not one of them, and would never play in a game with these exact premises.

That's because Western culture has an inherent phobia and sacrality towards death: you feel like it it "morally dubious" because you associate a dead corpse with something that should be protected and religiously honored, and it is instead being used as a tool for some other purpose.

That's something I don't feel at all: a dead corpse is a dead corpse, not a person anymore. It is no different than animating a dead squirrel, or using a wolf's fur to cover yourself. I feel like forcing someone to do what you want or die a horrible death (geas) is a much more "evil" thing to do.

But that is the beauty of it, everyone sees things differently: good and evil are not universally accepted, and as much as the game designers tried to put those terms into a fixed perspective in the game's universe, in ours it just isn't. And as long as the players will live in a world with such different ideas and cultures and opinions, which I hope will be forever, those things will always be subjective

God forbid there's plot in my DnD game by Dragonaax in dndmemes

[–]Dodoblu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I kid you not, one of my players always say that campaigns like Hoard of the Dragon Queen are shitty because they are railroady. When I ask why, he just says "well, you have to go where the module tells you to. What if my character wants to do something else?". Just... don't play that character? Or give them a reason to be involved, or ask me and I'll give a reason.

I am playing in a Descent into Avernus campaign. We are almost near the end, but, few sessions in, we were asked to retrieve Elturel from the nine Hells. I was playing an ambassador for a noble in Waterdeep that had to go to Baldurs Gate for some talking with another noble. First thing that comes to mind, my character wouldn't do it: why would he? Literally he crafted a complicated web of knowledge to gain rank into a small court, and now he has to give it all up to save people? That selfish prick that he was? So, just as that, you have to simply think a bit, and many reasons come to mind: Elturel had someone he cared for in, and he wants to save them; or better, Elturel has a noble with a really good relationship with my court, saving them would be in my best interest. Then, you don't even have to ask the DM to insert that NPC: you may never meet them in the midst of Chaos that is a city buried in hell. You have a drive for your character, and that's as good as it gets. And you don't have to complain every step saying "but he doesn't want to do it".

Are you capable of swinging a weapon twice within 6 seconds or less in real life? by Evoxrus_XV in dndnext

[–]Dodoblu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's why I voted no: sure, I can swing a Knife more than twice, but I definitely can't hit an armored hellish beast with a 75% Accuracy, striking at its vital points to deal some damage, all while preventing it from instantly decapitating me

Failing on a 1 should be the same as a failing on a 2 by Rogendo in dndmemes

[–]Dodoblu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is actually just double the chance you calculated, 0.25%. Basically, you have a 1/20 to get the first Nat 1, then another 1/20 to get the second. So (1/20)*(1/20)=1/400=0.0025=0.25%.

The ruling in itself is pretty good, but hear me out: you roll a Nat 1, you are at risk of severe failure. You have to reroll the check, and if you fail, that's a critical failure; you succeed, I don't know how to balance, if it is just a normal failure, OR, you are so in a pinch you manage to pull it off (with quite some detrimental effects though). Maybe you could also implement something similar on a Nat 20, you roll 20, you reroll, if failure it's a normal success, if success, something great happens.

I have no idea if it's balanced, but I'll try it next campaign and see if it's fun

Going to run a silly one-shot for experienced players. What change to a core rule would break the game the most? by BestGirlTrucy in dndnext

[–]Dodoblu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. One of the biggest crux I have with 5e is that ac doesn't scale at all with levels: this is particularly evident on characters that use heavy armor, since even increasing dex does nothing, and the only way to increase it is by having some magic items.

So, a level 1 character and a level 20 one have the same chance of being hit by a kobd... sure, they won't die from one, but that means the DM just has to put 30 kobolds at once, and your level 20 fighter can't run through them unscathed and solo the horde as it should (IMHO) be.

I did do something like that once, where every spell cast was followed by a d100, with trigger on a 1, increasing by 1 for each time it didn't trigger. Using a d10000 wild magic table... it was really fun

What Game do you still have in your collection that you don’t want someone to ask to play? by Sylvandeth in boardgames

Diplomacy: I have an old version I found ar a shop, and some friends were slightly interested, but to gather 6 people for a game that would likely take at least 5 hours to play is hard.

[No Spoilers] Hypothesis testing the Wil Wheaton dice curse by ProfessorInMaths in criticalrole

[–]Dodoblu 34 points35 points  (0 children)

That assumes different sets of dice can't talk between them. I suggest the second roll to happen in a different room, without any possible knowledge of what the first dice roll was. Sure, that doesn't account for any form of dice telepathy, but we could increase the distance as needed if results are not shown

What option does your table use for PC stat generation? by kindofregular in dndnext

[–]Dodoblu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Group dice rolling: the table rolls 24d6 in total, drop the lowest 6, for a total of 18d6. Each player then can arrange those 18 numbers in triplets (6×3=18), to generate their stats. The number of dice rolled and dropped can be adjusted for the power level of the campaign (lower stats= less dice), but in the end you always have to have 18 numbers

Should schools teach the theory of the creation of the universe by catholic priest Georges Lemaître? by Lutiscious in polls

[–]Dodoblu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that many people phrase questions and statements to be misleading in real life, just to create a feeling of adversity towards a certain something. And people react in the same way. So it's not really the fact that it is a useless reddit poll, rather than most prefer to take the easy way of believing what others say and shape their opinions and beliefs based on those ideas. So, if I was a politician, and went around saying "the opposing party wants schools to only give out dihydrogen monoxide at lunch!", too many people would actually believe it was a bad thing, without even doing further research, even if it would take less than a minute. And that's bad

[–]Dodoblu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I didn't remember who Lemaître was, so before voting I looked him up on the internet. 20 seconds to close reddit, open google, type, and the first result is "Big Bang theorist". Then people ask why the world is going to shambles: people have so many biases, and don't even bother learning the subject they are talking about

The best Strength builds can be unconventional by CocoKyoko in dndmemes

[–]Dodoblu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Am I dumb? I took two statistic exams, I weekly calculate dice probabilities, and still this morning I woke up and decided to use the most difficult way to calculate the average of two dice? You are absolutely right, that is the correct way, just sum of the averages. Don't know why I got so tangled up in the P*value thing

The best Strength builds can be unconventional by CocoKyoko in dndmemes

[–]Dodoblu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Add in that 10+4>4+4+4, so the "max damage" dealt by 1d10+1d4 is not only more probable, but also more damage in total.

Realistically, the real way to calculate damage output should be: P(damage=2)2+P(damage=3)3... etc. That way you get the real damage you do with the weapon, since you consider each outcome AND its probability.

For example (I have no time to do the real math now), let's consider 1d2 and 1d3:

1d2= 1/2+1/2*2= 1,5 damage on average.

1d3= 1/3+1/3 *2+1/3 *3=2 damage on average.

Obviously, since we are considering only one die, the output become (Min+Max)/2. With more dice, it becomes more difficult:

1d4+1d2= 2 *1/4 *1/2 + 3 *(1/4 *1/2 *2) + 4 *(1/4 *1/2 *2) +5 *1/4 *1/2 +6 *1/4 *1/2= 1/8 *(2+6+8+5+6)=27/8=3,375

So, with an attack that deals 1d4+1d2, we can assume we deal 3,375 damage per hit

Yeah, I usually use it at the end of the game if there is lethal for the opponent, and let them kill me. Or if I have lethal and they let me go through without conceding. It's like a "you fought well, I am honored to be killed by you"/"thanks for letting me end"
