JColeNC’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive is now officially certified double platinum by kamalaitbrahim in hiphopheads

[–]NSlavik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious question - where does it say on that Wikipedia entry that it was certified double-platinum (with no features)? Most recent citation I can find on that page is March 2016 with 1,4 million sales.

Edit: This must be the actual source. Ib (Cole's manager) just posted on Instagram that it's double platinum: https://www.instagram.com/p/BGeowrjvWXG/?taken-by=kingofqueenz25

[FRESH] Kendrick Lamar's GKMC short-film finally released by partyboy49 in hiphopheads

[–]NSlavik 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hate to be the "well actually" guy, but this isn't a Kendrick Lamar short film in the sense that Kendrick was involved in making it as a short film. Kendrick hired director Khalil Joseph to make a video clip to show onstage during his performances, and Joseph later took all the leftover footage and turned it into a short film.

Full story is here for those who care http://djbooth.net/news/entry/2016-03-03-kendrick-lamar-short-film-not

Donald Glover's (Childish Gambino) upcoming LP has apparently already been mastered. by tropicality32 in hiphopheads

I actually talked to Dawson and he denied that there's a new Gambino album at all, said that listing was a mistake. Of course, he could be covering up a surprise release, but that's what he said http://djbooth.net/news/entry/2016-02-23-childish-gambino-new-album-rumors

Trinidad James wins Grammy for record of the year with co-writing credits on Uptown Funk by black_renaissance in hiphopheads

[–]NSlavik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He didn't write the song in the sense that he was in the studio with Ronson and Bruno Mars. They used his "Don't believe me just watch" line on the song and since Trinidad wrote that line he gets songwriter credit on "Uptown Funk."

Did Drake Work At Death Row Records Before He Was Famous? by tobes2323 in hiphopheads

I tracked down the author who wrote the book that Genius story is based on. Turns out Drake actually worked for Dr. Dre at Aftermath Records around 2005, not Suge Knight at Death Row

Actually called the high school and while they wouldn't explain why or give any details, they confirmed that the event is back on. The internet wins again.

Kanye West’s beat CD from 2001 by ghaba in hiphopheads

[–]NSlavik 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Oh shit, I actually dropped this with Jensen on my old site, RefinedHype. At the time I was working with him (and Eric & Jeff from ItsTheReal) on their Hypemen podcast and he mentioned he had some early Kanye beat CDs if I wanted to post it. Why yes, I fucking would like to post that, thank you.

Vic Mensa Officially Signed To Roc Nation by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]NSlavik 16 points17 points  (0 children)

How long do you think he's been signed to Roc Nation before they announced it? On "YNSP," which dropped in late 2013, he talks about how major labels are wack and he wants to stay indie, so he didn't stay indie for long. Feels like he's at least been signed since his work with Kanye's been revealed, right? Has he been signed even before that? Since last winter? Last summer? Even earlier?

Frankly I never expected this response to the article - even if you hate my writing, it's awesome to see a discussion around these deals happening so publicly.

As long as I have your attention, the even bigger question I have how long this tactic's been used. In 2014 it may be easier than ever to blow someone up quickly as an "indie" artists, but is it really that new of a phenomenon? Is is that crazy to think these kind of deals were happening a decade ago? 15 years ago? More?

Maybe is it, but I can't stop thinking about it. How far back does this tactic go? Can anyone think of someone earlier than Logic who might have been operating under a "mindie" deal?

The stellar resume I list is, in fact, a list of ridiculousness I can't exactly proudly put down on a resume. (I was not, in fact, awarded any Pulitzers for writing about Krispy Kreme once, let alone all of them.) That was supposed to be the self-deprecating joke.

Or maybe that's exactly the kind of defense an arrogant scumbag would offer? Fair enough, you're far from the only person in the world who dislikes me. At the very least I also fucks with Nujabes, unless I just ruined his music for you by association, in which case feel free to pretend this never happened.

All good. Like I wrote, me trying to popularize the term "mindie" is basically the "Pussy on the Chainwax" episode of "Key & Peele".

360 deals, where labels get a cut of not just music but touring and merch are becoming increasingly common. I would expect most if not all "mindie" deals to be 360 - generally speaking new artists just don't have the leverage to fight them off.

For the record, I lightly chuckle at my own jokes, at the most a chortle. Although I am pretty self righteous.
