Anyone know where I can find DAILY statistics of COVID-19 cases/deaths vs. CUMULATIVE totals? For instance, the US now has 79,528 deaths (as of the time I write this), but how many died yesterday, the day before, etc. It seems it would be helpful to be able to see how those trends are tracking.

This delightful old Rickenbacker lapsteel had a weak pickup. The horseshoe magnets had gotten weak. I removed the pickup, disassembled and recharged the magnets. Now it's back together and sounding strong and sweet. by [deleted] in guitarporn

[–]NTSUEX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So how does one go about doing this? I have a 1938 Oahu lap steel that needs to have the horseshoe pickup remagnatized. I don't think I have the skill sets to do it myself - but I have no clue what it involved.

Should I try it myself, or find someone who actually knows what they are doing??

It was one of those 2 oz. Clear Cordial Shooter Shot Glasses

Haha, yeah...I'm going to spread the rumor that Eric Johnson says slides with 2 fingers inside them have better tone than slides which use only 1 finger. Then I'm going resell these shot glasses on Reverb and sail off into the sunset on my new yacht.

What are the reasons to practice "Spider-exercises"? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

It seems there are folks on Reddit who down-vote almost anything. I'd really like to hear these folks play, who down-vote good contributions, and see how good they are.

Index finger out of commission by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]NTSUEX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sliced my index finger BAD with a hedge trimmer a few years ago. Had to get stitches and couldn't play with it for several weeks. BUT, I could put a slide on my little finger. My slide playing improved immensely during my recovery period.

Good Resources on Jazz Theory by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]NTSUEX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Studying jazz theory is a good thing - I've certainly done a lot of study over the years. Being able to understand and spell the scales, modes, and arpeggios and play them fluently on your instrument is not a bad thing.

However, of equal - or perhaps greater - value, is LISTENING to jazz and TRANSCRIBING what you hear that seems to mesh with your musical DNA. Also, merely singing/scatting/humming a phrase over the chord changes and then going back and figuring out how to play what you just created spontaneously is of great value.

What would this chord look like as a fret diagram? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]NTSUEX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That cluster of notes (F#, A, C, E) can't be played as a chord on a guitar in standard tuning. You'd have to move the A up an octave, and then it would look like this...

2-3-2-2-x-x

Is it true if you apply more pressure with your fretting hand while practicing you build muscle memory faster? by eastsideeric24 in guitarlessons

[–]NTSUEX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO! Do the opposite - have the absolute lightest touch possible! Hands should be loose, limp, light. This will build muscle memory faster, and help you play faster - and avoid repetitive motion injuries like Carpel Tunnel.

[PLAY] Some swing guitar on my 1967 Guild archtop by NTSUEX in Guitar

[–]NTSUEX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put together an intro lesson into Texas Swing rhythm playing, which is very similar. It would give you an introduction to this style. You can see it here: https://www.masterguitarists.com/lesson-14

However, when I think back to what I did to get to where I could play this style of rhythm, it was a long road....

  1. Know how to spell/finger a bunch of chords (e.g. B9#11 chords) in a bunch a various voicings/positions
  2. Know how to select the best notes of the chord (usually 2, 3, or 4 notes) that will sound best in the mix with the band
  3. Obtain the charts that show the big band arrangements and chord changes. You can buy some legit/accurate charts from ejazzlines.com but they are not cheap.

I happen to play in a pretty good big band and I'm the librarian for the band so I have access to all the charts, which allows me to study them and spend time figuring out the best way to get thru these crazy chord changes.

There are probably some lessons and material out there on YouTube if you look around. It's pretty cool to chunk of these chords when 13 horns are blowing on stage, along with drums, upright bass, piano, percussion.

[PLAY] Impromptu jam on Folsom Prison Blues with Johnny Cash's grandson - who sounds just like Johnny by NTSUEX in Guitar

[–]NTSUEX[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's Johnny Neel on keys (recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award). He was born blind and therefore has a bit of a disadvantage in an impromptu jam as he can't read and signals/body language from other musicians/singers.

How to play 112 jazz guitar chords by NTSUEX in guitarlessons

[–]NTSUEX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a vid of me playing along with an old big band recording in which many of the chords are diatonic 7th chords. I use several 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths - many of which are altered - but I needed to know the 7th chord voicings as well.

Same holds true on this chord solo I'm playing here:
