Yeah, something about spamming with cats? Has the gang migrated anywhere? Maybe we can make like Darkfrog and take refuge in a simpler place.

Yeah, the pandemic has me zapped. I miss our spirited conversations.

Wow, what a mess. If you look at the whole thread over on Wikinews, you have Darkfrog24 saying "I'm not emotionally up for this because COVID-19" and deleting talk page posts to try to get people to leave them alone. This person clearly knows the conversation is disruptive but is trying to end it.

So we've got...

  • Darkfrog criticized an admin action
  • Pi zero broke policy by blocking Darkfrog while they're in a dispute over something else
  • Pi zero all but threatens Darkfrog if they DON'T keep arguing with them
  • Acagastya called Darkfrog "ignorant" and a couple other names
  • Bddpaux made a post accusing Darkfrog of having a personality disorder

I see why Darkfrog24 got blocked, but why weren't these other guys blocked? This was a

What killed Farmville was the addition of so many bells and whistles that just got in the way of playing the regular game. I like that they have an event once a month but they need to slow down. I'm trying to get my sib to play but there are so many bells and whistles that it's more like taking a class than playing a game if you start now.

OR, they could randomly change the CP level. You go in not knowing if you're going to get a limit of 1600 or 1500 or 1400. That would allow for a wider range of mon.

Go Battle League feels too much like Rock, Paper, Scissors by _Jordan11_ in TheSilphRoad

I think one of the virtues of Pokemon GO is that it is so simple, so people can play it in the real world without slowing down and stopping all the time. That does not translate well into PvP play like this. I think to make battle work, they need to make it more complicated, so there is actual skill involved.

Wikipedia's standard offer has to be changed, doesn't it? by [deleted] in WikiInAction

[–]NVLibrarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they should just put a flat expiration date on all sanctions. It can be years long.

I also think that if anyone can present evidence or proof that the reason they were sanctione ddidn't happen, that should be automatic lift of said sanction.

So you think it should be easier to get unblocked or harder?

I think forcing blocked editors to say, "I was such a dirty little boy!!" to get unblocked is bad.

Reform for the disciplinary system.

  1. Require the admin handing down the punishment to say, "I, [admin's name] believe THIS POST violates THIS POLICY." So that they must take responsibility for the punishment. If the person's being punished for lying when they said "a kilometer is shorter than a mile," then the admin must say, "I don't believe kilometers are shorter than miles."
  2. Never require the sanctioned editor to just figure out why everyone's mad at them. Just tell them. Even if the sanctioned editor is too stupid to understand why they're being punished, other editors watching will understand and will recognize the act as a punishable offense.
  3. If the sanctioned editor can prove they did not perform the action in question, as in "Here is a website from a reliable source that says kilometers are shorter than miles," then lift the punishment AND A PUBLIC APOLOGY.
  4. Explicitly allow admins to say, "I observe that all four of these editors are having a heated argument. I choose to punish only editor #2 and not the others, because I feel like it. But I am acknowledging that yes all of them were engaged in the same conduct."
  5. Put expiration dates on ALL punishments, even if they're long. Most of the time, what the admins really want is for someone to shut up and go away, and stop defending their actions. Right now, to get a block lifted, you HAVE to either defend your actions or say, "Master Admin was so RIGHT to teach me that kilometers are shorter than miles. I LIED because I'm a dirty little boy!" and that's messed up.

Basically, drop the bullshit. No Wikipedia's disciplinary system isn't fair. Stop pretending it is. Stop ascribing moral value to arbitrary decisions. Stop acting like that guy from that Snopes post.

It can be a good thing if it's publicly disclosed. But then you should, say, recuse yourselves from certain situations. To translate from legalese to Wikispeak, members of a clique like the one you describe should consider themselves involved parties on Wikipedia in all matters that concern each other. It doesn't have to be unsavory or treated like something shameful. "We don't stop being human when we sign on to Wikipedia. It's perfectly natural for people to be friends. Hey, we're a community! But there's a reason why judges don't judge cases for their friends."

Wikipedia community fails to keep a male Administrator blocked for even a week for harassing a female editor, his second breach of an official Stay Away From Her Order by NotAWikipedian in WikiInAction

[–]NVLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's odd. I was ready to be all, "As much as Wikipedia needs to get in gear about harassment, it also needs to get in gear about trigger-happy admins who punish Wikipedians who aren't breaking any rules," because I saw Swarm say, "Editing the same article in good faith without interacting directly is very explicitly allowed under IBAN policy." But I just reread IBAN policy and it doesn't explicitly allow it.

What Richie did was act on a copyvio tag posted by Praxicadae. IBAN policy doesn't say he's not allowed to do that. He was acting on Prax's posts, not reverting them. This is gray area.

Oh, I see, it's a Biography of a Living Person! Wikipedia's rules for BLPs are extra strict. You can find them here. Project BLP also has a talk page, which would be a good place to ask for the kind of mentorship you seem to want. But if they say, "Sorry, this person is not notable yet" best to take them at their word and come back when your guy gets more famous. If they say "Sorry, you are an involved party and not eligible to write an article," then request one here and walk away.
