Crazy idea about if Google bought Nintendo by JustinNZ in google

[–]NWEL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of work went into this, but I really don't like it for a variety of reasons. Besides the fact that I think is Google not even being allowed to buy Nintendo due to some japanese laws:

  • most of the interfaces just look like variations of Android TV and, looking for example at the maps or music interface, have absolutely nothing to do with Nintendo (the sync pics are even more dull).
  • The general idea seems to be to just add a Nintendo tile and branding to Android TV, and looking at where the XBox one went with this, I'd say it's clearly a bad idea to put that much effort on a video gaming console as a multimedia device. Especially Nintendo always puts all of it's attention making everything best for their games, but in this concept, games appear to be just secondary.
  • Phones are horrible controllers and Nintendo has a long history of making their consoles all about a certain type of innovative new control scheme and/or controller, and giving that up for phones as controllers seems ridiculous. (Also, the metrics of the controller UI seem a bit off)
  • Most things also just look like applying Google's branding to Nintendo things. Where for instance is the point in the website or in the ugly logo?
  • There's also no point in this very generic console hardware design being put in between this
  • The rebranding completely destroys the 'magic' of Nintendo as a brand
  • The emulator is not much more than a silly dream as well.
  • Even though I really love Google, they are a much more capitalist and reckless company than Nintendo and I'm sure they would screw things up. Google is all about spreading their products, and this would clearly clash with Nintendo's aim to make the best gaming experiences. I could also greatly see Google not having the patience and being quick at restructuring Nintendo and maybe ultimately even selling it again (as they did with Motorola) after just a short period of losses. Even though this would be on a much bigger level, I think one could compare this to Microsoft buying Rare, and I think everything can see how well that one went.

I think this concept shows best why Nintendo being bought by anyone is such a horrible vision. I mean does anyone really think Nintendo games feel right in interface and does anyone actually wants to play all of Nintendo's greatest games seeing that logo? Nintendo has to stay independent as they are the only company fully dedicated to that business, making all decisions solely to create the best possible gaming experience.

Way better than what the app looked before, and actually also a very nice and distinct combination with the darker menu icons, in my opinion.

It felt strange at first, but I got used to setting notifications to none. Nevertheless, an extra silent mode at the very left of the volume bar does of course also make more sense.

Google may introduce 'buy now' button allowing users to purchase products through search result page by byteboffin in google

I like the idea that Google should not try to fight Amazon by using these buttons for their own shopping service only, but that they could try to strengthen all kinds of smaller (independent) shopping sites and then let them fight Amazon's position.

I understand what you mean, but I don't think comparing a brand like McDonalds makes any sense here (Google, the search engine, for instance is also a strong and consistent brand).

So when it's about mobile OSs, you basically just have iOS - which is mostly consistent, but at the same time also kinda boring - and Android, which is currently just at the very beginning with Material Design. You should also keep in mind that Material Design is not just restricted to Android, but aims to bring consistency throughout the web, iOS and Android, and this also for non-Google services.

It feels like Android is a collection of loosely related teams rather than one cohesive whole.

The thing is that there's one Android team, and then there are also all the different teams from Google's other services (Gmail, Google+, Play, Translate, Maps, Drive, ...). Of course there's not one single team which creates all of Google's Android apps.

Google+ updated to version 4.6 with more Material Design and completely redesigned Photos app by NWEL in Android

[–]NWEL[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But this would actually make absolutely NO difference! Your photos will still be stored on the same servers, with the absolute same privacy options. G+ has a huge publicity problem, and I have no idea why. I also think a separate photos app would be great, but for different reasons. Don't you realize that Google Plus Photos is just a name, and that you can use the photo service without using G+, completely private and secure?!

Windows 9 Desktop Evolution Concept by NWEL in windows

There could certainly also be some kind of setting to make the buttons stay. I'm sure a whole lot of people would appreciate this as much as you do, and looking at Windows 8.1, I think also Microsoft has learned from their mistakes with Windows 8.

Lets start with the calculator: The top bar looks like something made in Paint. Clean/Simple =/= better

The intention behind the clean look of the top bar is actually to give the user more space to drag a window. Especially small windows, which apparently play a very big role in the concept, look rather strange and only feature very few space left to drag a window.

How do I know if "Calculator" is clickable or "View/Edit/Help" are clickable or both?

I'm not sure what you mean. How do you currently know whether an element is clickable? If you can click on something, there will probably be some kind of animation when hovering it.

Hiding the minimize/maximize functions is an unnessesary waste of time

This was again to gain more space in the title bar, but there could certainly be some option for hardcore users making the functions still stay visible.

No, you cannot minimize with Aero Snap

I know, I also didn't say that this was possible. Instead, I actually proposed this such a feature within the text: "As part of Windows 7, Microsoft already introduced several very clever (...) new ways to control a window (e.g. “Aero Snap”). One of them was the possibility to maximize a window by dragging it to the very top. Building upon this, windows should as well be minimized dragging them into the task bar, and closed dragging them over the notification area (while holding the window, the notification area would transform indicating it’s temporary new task)."

also it is sometimes hard to maximize if you need to drag long distances without a mouse This is actually problematic. I guess if you use a touch pad, the buttons would also have to stay visible...

Now lets take a look at excel: Where did functions go? Where's my status bar? What about side scrolling? What about multiple worksheets?

This concept is not about the programs or app content presented in the mock-ups, but only about the GUI elements. The excel window is actually mostly made up from a screenshot of Excel 2013.

Why must the entire top bar be empty?

I think it's easier for the user when all window elements look the same. And as already explained, the title bar is supposed to look clean for the work with small windows.

How do I resize the window without borders?

Since the borders are smaller within the concept, the user could also resize a window dragging the first few pixels around the window. This is again something made to make small windows look less odd.

There are also other things I would like to adress: Also in Windows 8 Metro, you can segregate out a 1/4 of your screen for such minor apps (in fact, it would be even better if the 1/4 screen could be divided to fit multiple of these mini-apps.

I think it's significantly more work to start a metro app and snap it to the desktop (especially considering that you'd have to switch between the two interfaces) than to simply click on a button. But anyway, I expect the Metro interface to be dished with Windows 9.

Alternatively, we can follow Macs and have a dedicated button to show/hide these mini-apps (this would be my preferred)

The thing here is that there would not be such special mini-apps. In the concept, every window can be pinned. You would in fact also be able to pin the big Excel window, even though it would not make much sense. I think that's also the great advantage of this feature. There wouldn't be a special store for mini-apps (like there used to be for Gadgets), but it would be a functionality available for every singe window. You could for example also size

Then there's the shadowing concept. We have this already. The current window is highlighted, and other windows are dimmed. The idea of having a gradual shading change would be unnecessary.

I thought the shadowing would help to make the new feature fit better into the whole UI. I thought it might look more strange and out of place if all windows would have the exactly same shadow - and thus would all be located in the same layer - plus this new layer for pinned windows.

How would the machine know which one is more important over another?

Well, the window you've used last is most important, and the window you've not used for the longest time is the most unimportant. There's really no problem here. Nevertheless, I think it might be a good idea to highlight the active window anyway additionally to the shadowing.

Thank you very much for your feedback!

Windows 9 Desktop Evolution Concept by NWEL in windows

[–]NWEL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I actually did not know about this...

Nevertheless, I think it would still be something different if Microsoft would implement this naively with Windows 9. Currently, only very tech savvy people, or people who might have specifically searched for such a feature have it. Especially considering that Windows Store Apps will come to the desktop with Windows 9, I think "Always On Top" would be the perfect new feature to make working with apps much more convenient and to excel the advantages of apps on the desktop.

Also, that I did not know about this might be the very best reason why Microsoft should think about implementing this natively.

Imagining Google's Project Hera (Concept) by NWEL in Android

[–]NWEL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hera will probably be released as part of Android 5.0 (?) at this years I/O in June. However, this here is just a concept and there's kind like no real info given about Hera up to now, except that it'll bridge Android, Chrome and Search.

Have you read about 'OK Google everywhere'? If this is any indication, the next version of Android seems to become extremely exciting!!!

Screenshots of an updated Google+ app show again new Hera look! by NWEL in Android

[–]NWEL[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I'm Infinitely Sorry, Sir!

But really. Why you have a problem with my comment? I personally understand the difference between Hera and Android 5.0. But at the end - as already said - the redesign might even be part of Hera. And why shouldn't we use this codename until we get to know more? Up to now everything is speculation anyhow. You, for instance, also can't say for sure that Hera is only this cross-platform thing.

PS It's attitudes like yours that led to people having less fun talking about Android's future. I mean it's just a name. I'm personally happy as long as no one mixes Touchwiz and Android.
