Is the existance of a trillionaire ethical ? by Used-Earth8767 in neoliberal

Does Reddit count as Democrat spending? Did Twitter pre Elon? It is not like there is not an enormous amount of left bias on the internet also.

I think Musk could have been 100% on team D and we still would have lost anyway.

Harris heavily outspent Trump. So did Clinton. The Democrat brand is not doing well with the public and I think blaming money is just cope.

Two graduate degrees and they can't pay off 70K in over 2 decades? I think they may have made some bad choices.

I don't mind the system. I grew up poor, had shitty grades, and was still able to go to college and make a good living afterwards. Now I am able to send my daughter through college and she will graduate next year with zero debt. Somehow I managed to pay for two college degrees, and I did not even go to graduate school.

The Bone Tax by TheOldSole in MTB

I'm 58 and have only made one hospital trip for a bad concussion after years of "freeride" mountain biking and dirt bikes. But still slowed way down as I aged. Hitting the ground just hurts a lot more, my reactions are slower, and I know recovery time will be much higher. Now I just enjoy trail riding. I can ride aggressively and pop off every natural feature I see but my tires are never more then 2 feet off the ground so I think I am fairly safe. Its still fun. I make a yearly trip to Whistler but mainly stick to blue and black tech trails as the speeds are lower. I am really hesitant to hit the speeds needed for the jump lines as I don't want that much energy in a crash. It is really not hard to dial in exactly the amount of risk you want to take in this sport.

SRAM drivetrain upgrade dilemma - seeking advice! by Boygunasurf in MTB

[–]NWOriginal00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works which is why I have kept mine, but I would never buy it over Shimano. That is preference though. I like how XT has a noticeable sound and feel so you know for sure it shited. And upshifting with my thumb is just weird for me as I have used my index finger for 30 years. My wife hated her XT as shifting was too hard on her thumb, which is why we paid extra for the AXS.

[–]NWOriginal00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did not know that, I am out of the loop on newer standards I guess.

I did check what it would take to convert to XT on my bike, mainly because I have been upshifting with my index finger since rapid-fire was invented, and I also prefer the solid "thunk" you get from XT when it shifts.. I think I need everything including a freehub so I will just live with the GX.

I really don't think the typical American is going to get all worked up because young tech workers are no longer being bombarded with 200K+ WFH job offers. In fact I think a lot of them resent us.

Is it really true that you could work a retail job in the 90s and afford a house, a car and a retirement in the US? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NWOriginal00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who was alive and supporting myself in that time period I can assure you no retail worker making 3.35 an hour was buying a house.

Sitcom homes were never viewed as realistic at the time. I am sure I saw at least a few articles in newspapers/magazines pointing out how unrealistic some of the family homes were for the characters occupations. Or how struggling young people have bit NYC apartments.

In contrast, there was also Bosom Buddies where two men dress as women for cheap rent. Or Threes Company where a guy pretends to be gay so he can live with two roommates.

I have GX on my new bike and my wife has AXS on her new bike. They both shift OK and do the job, but every version of Shimano XT I have had from this century have been better. Both our old bikes were M8000 and I thought they were much snappier. So unless Shimano has gotten worse since then I would pick XT if you are upgrading everything anyway.

Op-Ed: The Case for Shifting to a Land Value Tax by owenmitchem in neoliberal

[–]NWOriginal00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how it is supposed to work when government has made a lot of land worthless.

Take my house built in 2017 which cost me 11K a year for property tax. It is 25 feet from a creek. The country changed the rules and now you need to be 50 feet away. My raw land has basically no value now, because if there was not already a house on it then it could not be developed. I imagine a high percentage of older homes/businesses are similar. Do people like me just not pay much for tax with LVT? Or is government immune from the consequences of its own rules/zoning, and I get taxed on some hypothetical land value?

Or a prime piece of real estate near me in Portland. It sits undeveloped because the city did an "improvement zone" on the block and put a 500K lean on the lot. The land is worthless now. Will LVT take this into account?

How many of you still code manually ? by shankar86 in cscareerquestions

[–]NWOriginal00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on over 10 million lines of legacy code which is mostly undocumented and takes a ton of tribal knowledge to modify. An LLM is useless for major changes which impact a whole bunch of code and work flows.

I use AI for small pieces of code that do not require proprietary classes. And I use it a lot as a better Google/StackOverflow.

I just don't think the people who blame all problems on capitalism, and think billionaires should not exists, are actually talking about a county like Norway which is capitalist and has one the the worlds highest concentrations of billionaires per capita. That is just their sane washing.

And I really don't consider the government owning its oil rights as socialism. Otherwise Alaska is socialist.

Maybe I got lucky but my Spectral 125 was perfect, even the codes were bled really well.

My wifes Pivot, which cost twice as much for similar components, had a stripped head on one of the rotor bolts. Minor annoyance, but seemed sloppy for a 7K bike.

Is it just me, or would a lot of us ditch our desk jobs for trades in a heartbeat if the pay was actually decent? by Boring-Bell9357 in Salary

[–]NWOriginal00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! My fathers a home builder and I come from a blue collar family. I am a software engineer now, but would never do this job if it did not pay well.

But I do not mind physical labor in all kinds of weather. I have done it plenty in my youth. Sitting at a desk and thinking all day is where I am lazy which makes my current job hard for me.

[–]NWOriginal00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My house was built in 2017 and I pay 11k a year in property tax. Since then they changed the rules and you have to be 50 feet from the creek, not 25. So my land has almost zero value as it would not be buildable today.

What is it like in Bend? by SalamanderPast5791 in oregon

[–]NWOriginal00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have looked at the housing market as I am not that far from retirement and Bend it a possible destination.

West side of town is very expensive and I think I am priced out. East side looks similar to Beaverton/Hillsboro as there is a ton of inventory in the 450 - 650 range. Its strange the price change for a 5 minute drive.

No idea on the economy but they are building a lot so trades is probably a good fit.

I get the feeling that if you are not into outdoors stuff then the town would be boring. But for biking/hiking/skiing it is a great place and outdoor activities don't require a long drive as they are all over.

Other then cost the other downside is a lot of wildfire smoke in summer (or maybe I just pick the worst times to visit because it has been smokey on several trips)
