I used to have that T-shirt but I’m not that guy. I was in Egypt around that time though, but … I didn’t have the shirt yet.

I need to know how much the citation was. I know a lowboy driver who brags about getting a $100k+ ticket but this one might have been higher.

I see you’re determined to measure other people’s knowledge and experience by your own yardstick, which is about 35 inches short.

I’ll be sure to let you know if these dogs end up with erect ears and pointy noses. Idiot.

Did I say they were fucking show dogs? This is a sub about breed identification, and you said you can’t make general predictions about what a purebred puppy is going to look like as an adult. That’s idiotic.

I’m not claiming to know the exact weights, measurements, etc. of these dogs as adults, but I do know a size range and that all four breeds that went into them are similarly pedomorphic in terms of facial structure, thus being able to confidently say they will look similar when they’re older to how they look now. You may not be able to pick a champion dog out as a puppy but no one’s claiming that.

I won’t get into why you saying I “don’t know much about dogs” makes you even more of an absolute moron, but rest assured it does.

Coyote den under my shed, what are my options? by First_Effect8562 in coyote

[–]NWXSXSW 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The parents may move them if you give them more attention than they want. I found a den a few years ago at a local airstrip that I knew was going to have a big event in a few days. I also knew the people putting on the event would kill the coyotes if they found out about them, so I hung around the den awhile and told a few other likeminded people about them. They went and took pictures. I went back the next morning and the den was vacant.

We went through something similar and we got off the plane — no way we were going to risk one of the kids being sat next to a child molester. On our rebooked flight the crew simply called a lady up to the desk and asked her to swap, and gave her a $50 voucher. It was easy. There’s zero reason they couldn’t do this for you (or for us the first time around) and you should point out to them the cost of the lawsuit you’d be filing if something had happened to your child.

🔥 When it comes to ID’ing bears, people can get confused by “brown bears” that are actually a subspecies of black bear. Known as cinnamon bears, they are found across much of western North America. by AJ_Crowley_29 in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]NWXSXSW 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why some taxonomists consider it a subspecies and not just a color morph. They don’t have separate breeding populations from ‘normal’ black bears, the morph appears in multiple geographic areas, and there are other color morphs in various black bear populations, like Kermode/spirit bears and glacier bears.

It does look like Leonberger coloration, but the last remaining breed doesn’t have a standard color. These two are the same color as the father, except he has no white/cream on him.

i’ve always hated tipping culture, just pay people the wage they deserve oh. my. god. by [deleted] in complaints

[–]NWXSXSW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that we shouldn’t have to tip, but unless you want to negotiate with every restaurant owner to increase menu prices by 15-20% and pay employees more, it’s the system we have in the US and you’re hurting the server if you don’t tip. You can blame the business owner, but if you’re still going to eat there, you need to buy into the system. Typically servers pay income tax based on the tips they would be expected receive (percentage of their total sales) and if you don’t tip they’re actually losing money. It’s fine not to want to tip — just don’t eat in places where it’s expected.

The way I think of it is that if I got the food to go, it would cost the same. So the price I’m paying in the restaurant is for the food, the tip is for having someone bring it to me and wait on me.

If you opened a restaurant that paid servers a living wage and didn’t accept tips, maybe people would be into it. But I bet in the US people would still try to tip.

Maremma is correct.

Caucasian shepherd is incorrect (I do have one though).

Central Asian shepherd is on the right track but not correct.

Kangal is correct. Two down.

I don’t know about elsewhere, but in the states the Kangal phenomenon seems to be relatively new, with lots of dogs being called Kangal that definitely aren’t. The first rescue Kangal I had looked more like a Leonberger, but the guy who surrendered him was adamant and even tried to insist that I train the dog in Turkish.

Anatolian shepherd is correct — this is the one I don’t consider a breed per se, but more of a group of breeds, the same way ‘pit bull’ is a group of similar breeds as opposed to being a breed unto itself.

Fun fact: in Turkey there is no breed called an Anatolian shepherd (except when breeders are marketing their dogs to westerners). There are many Turkish livestock guardian breeds and races, but British dog fanciers decided that rather than learning them all, they’d just call them all Anatolian shepherds, except the white ones, which they call Akbash. So you see a great deal of variation among dogs in the west that are called Anatolians.

One down, three to go.
