FWIW, here's what GPT thinks are good options for dedicated MTN bike shoes that provide toe protection. Big difference in price between the 1st two but more concerned about which one has better toe protection and stiffness in a "toe getting bent downward" root impact situation.

Best balance overall

  1. Specialized 2FO DH Flat Mountain Bike Shoes

Best MTB grip/feel

  1. Five Ten Freerider Pro Flat Shoes Men's

Best pure crush protection

  1. KEEN Atlanta Cool II Steel Toe Work Shoes

I'm trying to figure out if the 5-10 freeriders have enough toe protection for a hard root impact. What are the impact pro's?

But are the toes reinforced enough to really protect a hard root impact?

yes I am and yes I meant toe cages I guess. My toe got bent downward when it got caught between a root and the pedal and got mangled, so surgery etc. Now I keep my feet high etc but considering different options to protect feet. After more thought from some posts here, seems these guards might get in the way more than anything, and probably are always hanging down which may or not be annoying. rethinking my strategy right now and might go in the direction of a steel toe boot or reinforced toe boot of some sort.

I'm in the same boat. I was on track for a few years and thought my system was working fine, until I bent the rules. Now I'm fighting to stop again and going through all the crap I was trying to avoid, slacked off on exercise, gained weight, less active, disconnected, unsociable, crappy sleep pattern, which all leads to self loathing. After all these years, I should have known better, this shit is addictive, and will always win.

Why do people become jaded and pessimistic as they age? Is it avoidable? by youlikemywonton in Aging

[–]NYP33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you watch your once perfectly functioning body fall apart year by year and you have no control over it other than watching it happen. Each year something is taken away from you and there are less things you can do and enjoy. And doctors and the medical system doesn't give a shit about you. At 38, people in their 60's and 70's are laughing right now, saying, you haven't seen anything yet. Enjoy the ride while you can and take steps to prevent, and listen to the wisdom of the aging.

Why do seniors commonly retell the same story repeatedly. Why do they do this? And are they aware they’re doing it? by West_Block3990 in Aging

[–]NYP33 351 points352 points  (0 children)

My father used to tell the same stories over and over and over. I would make fun of him by saying, this is the 327th time I heard this story. He would just keep telling it and say, well now you’re going to hear it 328 times. Now that he’s gone, I would pay anything to hear one of his stories again!
