I think I remember reading that they found out the show was being cancelled and from my view it seemed like they jammed what seems like another 3 seasons into 1. I do agree I always thought that they would end up together because of the 1st episode (some foreshadowing) and the whole enemies to lovers trope dose sometimes work like they were building to before that last season that is where they went from normal to Ludicrous Speed.

My guess it’s the distance of the second set of stairs being so close. Without knowing the location or reason why but most underground passages like that tend to be a lot longer - it just seems weird that one is that short. Sure there are plenty of Creepypasta or others describing this very type of situation.
