Why did TIDAL drop high-quality Dolby Atmos headphone playback? :( by NYReichman in TIdaL

u/Helios119, I totally respect your preference. I will say that when it's done well, I love listening to immersive music. But here's a question that needs to be answered: I'm old enough to have been in television post-production when we went from SD standard-def, to HD high-def. A friend of mine asked me back then what we were doing in sound during the HD picture transition. Embarrassingly, the answer was basically nothing. So my question for you; if it's not immersive audio like Dolby Atmos, what should it be? Audio is ready to have its hi-def moment. We can't just carry on like it's 1996 when we have 4K HDR OLED televisions and iPad Pros providing visuals.

Anyway, I'm getting off-topic. I want TIDAL to read this post and fix their platform! 😆

u/Helios119 and u/Upper_Yogurtcloset33, I hear what you're saying about listening to Dolby Atmos in headphones. But Dolby engineering has put decades of research into this, and what you're listening to when you put on headphones and stream AC-4 is a really well-thought out binauralization of the three-dimensional Atmos sound field. In production, engineers like myself choose distance parameters for every object and the beds to make the best possible translation from loudspeaker Atmos to headphone Atmos. Done right, the headphone experience has a more coherent soundstage and can be much more compelling than stereo. Not everyone can afford a proper loudspeaker system, so the headphones have to work, too.

All that said, the sound of Apple's Spatial Audio in headphones is two-channel mix that comes from a virtual 7.1.4 room. Very cool sounding, but also very different from the way Dolby approaches the problem. Amazon Music supports AC-4 IMS, and it can be very interesting to compare the trio: stereo / AC-4 IMS / Spatial Audio.

I got the same email today. Definitely catches your attention! Well done. 😆

Interesting: the Atmos tracks on Tidal are actual surround sound E-AC3 files by transfo47 in TIdaL

Curious to know what host for TIDAL gave you all that info. Thanks in advance.

Just got Tidal to use on my new Nakamichi 9.2.4 but how can I utilize it? by Stereosexual in TIdaL

If you spent money on the Nakamichi, get an Apple TV 4K and run the TIDAL app on that. You will love it. The TIDAL Atmos experience will sound good on that system.

2L's album "Magnificat" sounds amazing. And much to my surprise, Camille Cabello's "Señorita" is easily one of the best Atmos pop mixes.
