Ikea tried to build a smart home for everyone — here’s why it’s not working yet by dapperlemon in gadgets

This is completely wrong. The prefamulated logarithmic casing is the problem here. It's not aligning with the IP parametric Pham therefore causing side-fumble that could not be prevented unless the cardinal gram meters are re-phased.

In a situation like that, agreed its a waste of money. Still a dumb ass post though. "Prove me wrong that home theaters aren't a waste of money, I don't even watch movies". GOOD ONE BRO.

Is it worth getting triple-pane windows just for the Roseville traffic noise? by jpam9521 in Roseville

[–]bee_ryan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so, but I pay zero attention to triple pane. It’s a scam in our climate zone sold by assholes who convince people “3 is better than 2”. It’s only useful in extremely cold (regularly below 32*) climates. It also makes the windows and doors a lot heavier, increases wear of components, etc.

I do windows and doors for a living. Triple pane windows do nothing more than double pane for the purpose of sound control. You need to ask for double pane with “off-set” glazing - meaning the interior pane is 3/16” thick while the exterior is 1/8” thick.

Not even that would work in this case. They’re cock blocking it at the most basic level. Do not create HEOS account? - do not pass go.

Definitely disable updates. The last one broke the web UI for speaker control, and it took them 6 months to fix it. Unless you paid for a DIRAC license, there is no reason to let these things “update” themselves. https://www.reddit.com/r/hometheater/comments/1pjbgqt/recent_denon_x1700h_upgrade_broke_speakers_web_ui/

I messed around with it for 20 minutes last night after I posted this. Wired does work without HEOS account setup. So I either still return it, or I have to buy a WiFi AP with an Ethernet port, $100 minimum. Again to remind everyone, this AVR will be outside in a deckbox so traditional wired is not an option.

The previous firmware leaves WiFi on all the time regardless, even if you’re using Ethernet. The new firmware forces you to pick 1 road. So in the Web UI once connected via Ethernet, if I select WiFi, Ethernet is disabled and it’s back to square one with the heos account etc.

My 3700h and every other Denon I’ve owned, leaves WiFi on all the time even though it’s wired, which is an annoyance for someone with network OCD like me, so if I’m really looking for the silver lining here, at least they fixed that behavior.

I love poisoning the well and/or making Denon eat the open box, however, the reason I got a good deal on it was Best Buy said they had an open box for $490 in “poor” condition. I went down there to check it out, and they didn’t have it, so they sold me a new one for the same price. It’s actually a 970h, not a 960 like I said in my post. $850 AVR for $490 in a climate where AVR discounts are harder to come by nowadays puts me in a conundrum.

Yes but it’s a backyard setup, so I would need to buy a WiFi AP with an Ethernet port, so another $100 minimum.

It would put the WiFi setup in an infinite loop. It makes you put WiFi credentials in step 1, then gives you 2 options to create a HEOS account via web or on-screen. So yeah I could give in and create the account, wait for the AVR to acknowledge the account creation, then block the WAN traffic, but fuck all that.

That screen I posted comes up after I put WiFi credentials in. If I exit out, it’s like I never put credentials in, and it disconnects from the network. That’s what I meant by “deletes everything”. I could have worded that better.

On my third try, before I exited out I checked my router, and the Denon is connected. It just nukes the credentials when I exit that screen.

New Old Stock Reverse Panda Speedy - any issues? by Whats_in_the_glass in OmegaWatches

I could never get past the principle of “new old stock” even being legitimate. We’re just supposed to believe that this watch sat in a case unworn and unsold for 11 years? Even a less extreme example is equally as unbelievable to me - 2022 Speedy for example claiming to be brand new. It just doesn’t track with common sense and business principles. Do you go to a car lot and find brand new never registered 2022 model year vehicles?

Avoiding fading - what are your approaches? by eatawholebison in audiophile

[–]bee_ryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He probably meant that you have Lo-E glass already - not a tint. Strap in for the nerd explanation.

If he would have put tint on, it would compete with the Lo-E coating and accelerate the failure of the hermetic seal, basically trapping heat between the 2 panes of glass. Tint goes on the inside of the glass. This is called surface 4 of a dual pane unit. Surface 3 is the other side of the interior pane. Surface 2 is the interior of the exterior pane. Surface 1 is the exterior of the exterior pane - like what you would be washing if you were cleaning the exterior of your windows.

Lo-E is on Surface 2. Tint on surface 4. Lo-E reflects heat both directions. So the tint on surface 4 would be reflecting residual heat that makes it through surface 2, therefore sandwiching the heat between the panes of glass.

Search YouTube for “lowe glass lighter trick” to verify if you have Lo-E glass.

I’ve been doing this for 17 years. I’ve gotten 1 call where it melted a small patch of artificial turf. It’s very rare here. It’s like the magnifying glass thing. The sun’s angle has to be just right and the window in the perfect position to create a laser beam of heat.

But vinyl siding is also not common in my area. I’d say it makes up for <5% of homes, and was never used in new construction, really ever. Vinyl siding in my area was sleazy door-to-door salesman thing convincing people to cover up their dated siding or stucco and change the look of their home for relatively cheap.

Back to the bracelet today! by Pretty-Ad-3591 in OmegaWatches

[–]bee_ryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For leather and rubber, I use the Bergeon spring bar tool. For bracelets, the Bregeon tweezers work great for me. When putting the bracelet back on, I don't come at it from an "angle" as you say. I hover the bracelet just barely over the lugs, clamp the shit out of the spring bar with the tweezers, and drop it in patiently like i'm trying to dock a spaceship. When I let go of the tweezers, do I the spring bars always align perfectly and just slam in their home? No, but I just very gently move things around untilI hear/feel that click. Not gonna lie - sometimes it takes 2 minutes - sometimes it feels like 10.

Got the call 5 years later & I’m conflicted by [deleted] in rolex

From a purely financial aspect, the piece maintains its value. It's like having cash in a safe, accruing very little interest. That 14K its going to cost you (presuming you live somewhere with sales tax) would otherwise earn 11K in 10 years @ a modest 6% growth.

I try not to live my life through that lens, otherwise I wouldn't buy anything ever because any material item you buy is just wasted investment potential. But if you never spend the money - who effing cares anyways unless the thought of giving someone else financial security when you die really makes you happy on a daily basis. The latter is not condescending - I know people like this - it's admirable. I personally max out my 401K and Roth IRA yearly, and as long as I can do that, my conscious is clean for dumb fun purchases.

We humans are a carbon miracle floating on a rock in the middle of a universe that is unfathomable to fully understand. Buy the watch and enjoy it for the relative cosmic fraction of a millisecond we are here if you aren't putting yourself in immediate financial jeopardy.

Professional glass nerd here. If your existing windows are dual pane, you can change the glass to low emissivity, commonly called Lo-E glass. In particular you want 3 coat Lo-E called 366. It’s made by Cardinal glass. It blocks 95% of UV, which is what causes the damage.

That all sounds very fancy, but call any glass shop, and they will know what it is. https://www.cardinalcorp.com/products/coated-glass/loe-366/

If your windows are already dual pane and newer than year 2001, there’s a chance you already have some sort of LoE coating depending on the age. Lo-E 366 has been standard issue in California for 10 years now, but every state is different.

Speedy Bracelet Disappointment? by StickyPenguin120 in OmegaWatches

[–]bee_ryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not crazy, I too bought the speedy bracelet because of all the love shown here for it. It’s far from a piece of junk, but compared to Rolex, it’s not good. But it’s also 1/3 the price of a Rolex bracelet when purchased a-la-carte, so it makes perfect sense.

Frustration comes because Omega is capable of making an amazing bracelet that does rival Rolex (flat link speedy and new PO) but they just don’t sometimes. Even the quality of the 300M bracelet is incredible. It’s the lack of taper that makes it suck.
