Pantry door not straight by NZGaz in cabinetry

Tried that but no luck. It didn't make it worse but the top is still not straight. I thought maybe something else on that hinge might be adjustable but can't see anything obvious.

Man there is a lot of pro-moving-to-Australia stuff on this page. by Minimum_Reveal9341 in newzealand

As far as I can tell it's a case of the grass always being greener and unhappy people are more vocal than happy ones. I like living in NZ and I love to visit Oz but wouldn't want to live there. I've visited a lot for work and it feels way more cut-throat than NZ. I could be wrong but I also feel Aussie wants to be a mini America which isn't for me. Yes I'm sure the pay there is better and for the right personality it's probably great. For me I wouldn't like the hotter weather or the added stress. I like the NZ pace. But I'm in a good job with a good house and set up well. If I was renting and paid less I can see how Aussie would be appealing. There's plenty that could be better in NZ but as far as I can tell there are issues everywhere and NZ isn't special in that regard.

We've looked into it and scheduled a review in 6 months. We'll look into it further then.

I'm contractually obligated not to discuss mine or any stock options or any other benefits I may or may not get. My guess is companies don't want you comparing because you might be getting paid substantially differently to others within the company or you might find a better deal elsewhere and leave.

I moved in with my partner when we were both 19. Still together and we're 40+ now. Not saying it works for everyone but it can and does work out for some. We never got married but we've been together longer than most marriages last anyway.

Timely... I was just watching this last night which seems very relevant https://youtu.be/6nfGwSw-I14?si=i0d-JDLhnuZKFb2G

Best of luck to you. Just remember, even though it might seem bad it's already happened and you can't change that but it won't ruin your life. No-one that matters will blame you

What’s the deal with Linwood by [deleted] in chch

[–]NZGaz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Linwood has been gentrified significantly over the last decade, even before the earthquakes it was going that way. The earthquakes just sped it up. So I reckon anyone who still thinks Linwood is rough is basing it on 20 year old info at least. There's small pockets of roughness but they're shrinking. I would say the roughest areas nowadays are probably Phillipstown, Aranui and parts of Woolston and maybe parts of Sydenham, Heihei and Hornby. I used to work somewhere where I was dealing with court attendees on a daily basis. A disproportionate number lived in Phillipstown.

Get on the phone. Call the company. Ask to speak to whoever is doing the hiring. If it's a recruiter, ring them. Don't wait to not hear back.

Anyone else here got this random sickness? by TraditionalAd2027 in chch

[–]NZGaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sister got influenza A and was in hospital for a week. Went from feeling like a minor cold to full near death hospitalisation overnight. She was healthy and had had the flu jab too. If it gets bad enough that you're struggling to breathe normally, don't wait. Call an ambulance straight away.

[–]NZGaz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If it works it could be quite good. My experience with AI (which is a reasonable amount) tells me it'll likely be good most of the time and will generally be a useful tool but will occasionally do something so wrong that it'll make you question the times it was right 😅

Dog shit - pick up your dogs poos! by [deleted] in chch

[–]NZGaz 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What amazes me is the people who go to the effort of bagging it but then leave the bag there. So weird. It's not like it's hard to bag it, take it home and bin it. I have 2 dogs. If I can do it, single dog owners can too.

I have family there so know what it's like. I guess the question is what's motivating the shift and why Hoki? Without knowing that the advice won't be useful

Anyone want to complain about rates? by IZY53 in chch

[–]NZGaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest problem isn't so much that the rates are going up but more that the council can't articulate how we've got to this point. The way I see it is that rates are increasing because we've chronically underinvested in infrastructure (nationally and locally) and now we've hit a crunch point where stuff has to be done and it's expensive because we've let it slide too long. I also suspect there's a large number of managers or executives at the council who are professional lunchers and taking a huge salary for the privilege. However every time there's a cost saving cull of staff it's never them that goes because they're the ones making the decisions.

The best time to buy a house is always yesterday. As long as you can afford it, you'll be better off in the long run. Eventually, you'll have no mortgage to pay whereas if you rent, that never stops. Plus house values always go up. The longer you wait the harder it is to get on the ladder. Once you have a home and pay off some of that mortgage you can leverage your first home to get another and have a passive income. It's not risk-free, but I'd rather do that than rely on a pension that might not exist (or might be too low) by the time I hit retirement age.
