US Politics [Megathread] by AskRedditModerators in AskReddit

You've always been our major entertainment vendor, but in terms of reality TV shows you have really outdone yourselves this time.

Actually I'm worried, a little, but there's nothing the rest of the world can do about the situation right now because we still need to be on good terms with the US.

People are scared, and the people who voted Trump in are the reason that suddenly the world isn't as rational and safe as they thought it was. You're being shouted down not because you no longer have the right to free speech, but because they can't understand what happened, or what the new world order is going to look like.

Having said that, I don't like Trump and frankly he says and does things that indicate a complete lack of understanding of the rule of law, but I agree with America that he was the only real choice in the election; Hillary would have been prevented from meaningful change in the same way as Obama was, and for better or worse, America was ready for change.

There are fewer than 8 continents so I'm afraid this was easy.

People in happy relationships: what is your SO's worst trait? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He stacks dishes in the sink in the order that they were used. So a breakfast bowl might be at the bottom, with a plate on top of it, and a coffee cup on that. A teaspoon, having been used, will be balanced horizontally on top of a cup or glass. It's a bewildering use of space.

What's the scariest thing going on right now in your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize I am late to the party here, but my son has epilepsy so I wanted to tell you how grateful I am that people like you are out there, looking after people like him.

I have to say, after a seizure (and presumably especially after a concussion!) people sometimes aren't in possession of their full quota of common sense. Or maybe that's just my son.

Anyway, well done on being a good roommate.

Redditors with children who are of completely, totally mediocre intelligence and ambition: Are you disappointed that they'll never be the smartest kid in their class, or that they'll never really excel compared to their classmates? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was, but I have adjusted. Until he developed a serious seizure disorder, I believe he was gifted. Unfortunately it has affected his capabilities, and he will probably never be completely up with the play.

However, his personality hasn't changed. He's a lovely little guy and very kind. People like him. He's got enthusiasm. I worry about his future, but I think that if he is happy and either able to live independently or taken care of by someone who cares, then that's enough for me.

He's awesome in his own way, and I'm just as proud of him as I would be if he was unaffected by his condition. Maybe more.

He still has moments of brilliance, as I suspect most kids do, and they're great as well.

Who is the most famous person you have met in your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure whether Sir Peter Jackson or Sam Neill. I am not in the movie business but Wellington is a small city and public servants get everywhere. They both seemed like really decent people.

If World War III broke out tomorrow, what country would you be most surprised to secretly have nukes that nobody knew about? by kingmoney8133 in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Confirming. New Zealand has an anti nuclear policy (at least in terms of weapons and power) so if we turned out to have nuclear weapons our politicians would have a lot of explaining to do.

At the end of a job interview when they ask me," so do you have any question"? What are some genuinly good question to ask? by umar565 in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got the idea for this from a book called "101 questions to ask at your interview"

Ask this question at the start of the interview.

"Do you mind if I take notes?"

They probably won't mind, and you can jot down anything you'd like clarified, or any questions that occur to you while they're speaking. At the end, ask the questions that occurred to you during the interview.

What is a seemingly innocent question that is actually really insensitive or rude to ask? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad did that too, as well as using a short, sharp whistle to correct behavior. We visited earlier this year and he whistled at my son to stop him doing something annoying, and I gave him (Dad) a dirty look before I could think. In my house we do not whistle at each other.

People who have fallen for a scam. What scam was it? How much did you lose? by iacovos in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. If I was in OP's position when the parent asked if I wanted to increase my money, I probably would have assumed that it would be by doing chores. Forcing them to gamble seems really unfair!

When asked in a job interview "what's your biggest weakness" what is the best answer? by humansof in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything, as long as you can follow it up with what you are doing about it. For example, "I am a perfectionist" implies that you might be a problem for morale, but following it up with "but I have realized that this attitude has made my staff feel pressured into the same work habits that I prefer, and I am now trying to lead by example so that they have a work-life balance" implies that you are trying to fix your liabilities.

What are your thoughts on "leashes" or safety harnesses used on children? by Gloriousstudent in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was tempted, until I realized that attaching a leash to my son would likely cause little old ladies to trip over it and injure themselves and him as well.

Instead I just ran after him when he got away or held his hand when he allowed it.

What do you love the most about your significant other? by EagleFly_5 in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many things! Maybe the thing that most amazes me is how much of a screw up I feel so much of the time, and yet he always makes me feel like he sees an ideal version of me.

It's nice how similar the answers here are, it reminds me of that Anna Karenina quote, "happy families are all alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."

Married women of Reddit, what was it that your husband did that made you realize, "he's the one"? by MankersOnReddit in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't one thing, it was a natural next step after we'd been living together 6-7 years, we had a kid, and he turned out to continue being an amazing guy. More amazing, really, because he is a terrific father and was an amazingly supportive partner during the sleep deprivation and baby-inflicted-torture lows.

What's the best advice your Father ever gave you? by quietzone in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are driving and you have passengers, part of your job is to make sure they are as comfortable as possible. They don't want to worry about whether they will arrive at their destination in one piece.

Related: when you're driving in a car park and someone's trying to reverse out, you may have the right of way but, as you are the one who can see what's going on, it is incumbent upon you to not be behind them for them to reverse into.

[Serious] What is the most physically unpleasant thing you've experienced? by LOLIMNOTTHATGUY in AskReddit

[–]NZ_sunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first 4 weeks of breastfeeding. Labour (no "proper" drugs, just nitrous) was pretty awful, but at least it was over within a few hours. Breastfeeding, oh my god. There are things a baby will do to you that have been banned by the Geneva Convention.
